very good! nice bokeh.

Jun 11, 2012

Having read many positive reviews I've bought it to use with my Sony A35. Pros: this lens delivers excellent sharp image, correct colors and nice bokeh. f 1.8...2.8 are very good, from f3.2 to 7.1 it really shines. Delivers a lot of light, which is good for indoor use with no flash. Good for portraits too. This is something what you're expecting when you buy a new prime lens, great! Cons: Nevertheless it does some visible distortions, for example... Show More

Excellent

Jan 23, 2011

This lens has replaced my 50mm f2.8 as the lens that stays on the camera most of the time. On my KM Maxxum 5D it somehow opens up to F1.7! I don't know why I'm getting that extra stop, but I'm not complaining! As a huge fan of shallow DOF I was looking for a bit more bokeh than my 50mm gives me. Already owning that I decided to go with this 35mm that would give me a bit of extra working room. The images are nice and sharp. Something I worried abo... Show More

a must-have for almost any Sony DSLR

Dec 28, 2010

For several years, Sony shooters had limited options for a fast lens with a natural field of vision. Apertures of f/2.8 aren't fast enough for low light work. Sony's 35mm f/1.4 lens is prohibitively expensive for most people, and the 50mm f/1.8 SAM is too narrow for a walkaround lens. Now, Sony shoters have a new option - the 35mm f/1.8 SAM. Colors are nice and the lens has good center sharpness at f/1.8. It provides a natural field of vision, no... Show More

Cheap. Good. Some detail issues.

Nov 28, 2010

The imaging this lens produces for the cost of the lens is fine and perhaps superb. The plastic body is fine too. But the details on the plastic have some issues. First and foremost are scratch marks or rub marks under the manual focus switch. A friend with the same lens also has them. This is just bad engineering on the tolerances. A bit more picky but noticeable is the poor quality silkscreening of the letters and numbers on the lens. The cheap... Show More

A portable powerhouse for the a65 or a58

Aug 5, 2014

I am what you might call a semi-pro photographer, and when I'm not out taking pictures I'm reading camera and lens reviews, and I thought I'd wade into the discussion here. Although I like sharp pictures in good light as much as anyone, I've been a little leery of prime lenses due to their inflexibility and concerns over fumbling with lenses while on a mountain trail or whatever. (I favor travel photos and have been to Italy three times.) But put... Show More

Great Price vs. Performance

Nov 9, 2011

After reading a few online reviews I decided to pick this lens up to go with my new A77. I have enough fast zooms and was looking for my first prime lens in years. If you equate price paid with image quality then prepare to be shocked. This Sony 'easy choice' lens performs well beyond my expectations. The images appear crisp and sharp even when pixel peeping the files produced by the 24mpx A77 sensor. The motor is fairly fast and quiet. I gain ab... Show More

Good All-around Lens

May 30, 2012

I use this lens for low-light shots when I'm in dense crowds at conventions, and I've found the focal range to be very useful for that need. Wide-open, the shots are sharp, however CA is apparent. Stopping down to 2.2/2.5 removes CA, while retaining nice bokeh and increasing the sharpness slightly. The AF speed is acceptable (not faster than SSM) when used with phase detect, however with contrast detect the only way the lens can be used is to foc... Show More

Very happy with this purchase

Sep 3, 2012

I am happy I can share a review and my recommendation for this lens. This prime lens is one Sony's less expensive models and I was at first worried that I should invest in a more expensive model. However, I decided to believe the anonymous reviews (vast majority undeniably positive) and purchase the lens. The reviews were accurate and I couldn't be more pleased with my purchase (no buyer's remorse here). The fast speed, sharp images, great colors... Show More

The plastic fantastic

Nov 22, 2012

A very wonderful lens that is very cost effective. This lens plus the a77 is a great combo. When I bought my copy it was not as sharp as I thought it should be so I micro-adjusted it and the lens took on a whole new life!Sure, it feels very cheap, and it is a lot of plastic, but that is what makes this lens fantastic. If you happen to drop this lens, sure you'll be bummed out but you can always buy a new one cheaply, it's not like dropping a SAL7... Show More

A must have for any Sony APS-C Shooter

Mar 27, 2012

I used to shoot with Nikon and used the excellent 35mm 1.8 AFS on my former D90 body with great results. Now shooting the A77, I was hoping to have the same results with their 35mm SAM. For the most part, I'm not disappointed. Great little lens with few flaws. Pros : Sharp from wide open and gets extremely sharp stopped down a bit. minimal distortion. Easy-to-correct CA. Autofocus fairly accurate and sure. Also, it focuses pretty closely for this... Show More

Light and fast!

Feb 20, 2011

The fact of using this lens on an APS-C camera, like the SLT's and in my personal use the mirrorless Nex 5 (via Sony's LA-EA1), it will yield a 52.5mm effective focal point which makes this an excellent walk-around lens and great for most all uses. The build-quality is not stellar, as in MF mode the focus ring I'd prefer to have a little more of a positive feel. This doesn't really effect the use or performance of it, just a personal preference. ... Show More

Bought these lens for Nex-C3. Focusing in auto is very slow on LA-EA1, 5-7 seconds, but in manual mode 2-3 seconds only, miss focusing each 1 out of 3 times, but in manual no mistakes. Focusing ring is not convenient for manual use because it's narrow, but moving smooth. Lens light & small, very sharp at F4-F4.5 comparing with standard NEX kit 18-55s, colours more vivid. Super lens and affordable!

Oct 16, 2012

I mainly wanted to address people's comments about it being plastic - I have dropped this lens twice (how it happened, I don't know - not like me!) and one time the hood kind of jammed crooked, but not only was the hood ok after a lot of pushing, pulling and twisting to get it back on the threads again, the lens still worked flawlessly after both drops! Plastic does not mean fragile. As far as the lens itself, it is the sharpest lens I own and I ... Show More

This lens is perfect for portrait and people work. It is just as sharp and fast as the Sony 50mm f/1.8, but is wider. That makes it even more versatile for indoor work. Its minimum focus distance is also really great. The first thing that I used it for was a client's family portrait shoot. The results were great. Fantastic color. Sharp as a tack. Excellent bokeh. I also own the amazing 50mm f/1.8. I love that lens, but this one may soon become my... Show More

Primes Are The Best

Nov 29, 2011

Luxurious telephoto lenses like the 24-70 Zeiss are hard to justify when compared to this prime and others that Sony makes. For starters, they are bulkier. They are priced significantly higher then 3 primes. Their aperture does not drop as low, giving you a full stop and a half of light. Finally, the image quality is on par. Bokeh might be a little nicer in some of the expensive telephotos, but the bokeh in most primes are nice and creamy as well... Show More

great optics at bargain price

Jan 11, 2011

A large aperture normal prime is a must have for any photographer, and this lens delivers great image quality at a very low price. The crop-normal focal length of 35mm with the bright F1.8 aperture makes this lens very useful for indoors photography, and allows shallow depth of field effects beyond any kit zoom. Sony dt 35 is a plastic-body lens, as you'd expect for the low price, but the low price does not show in image quality or handling of the lens. Lightweight and small, it is easy to pick up as an all-round lens when you're not carrying your whole kit. Definitely recommended!

Simply does the job

Mar 11, 2011

If you prefer image quality on a low budget, this is probably the way to go. Nevertheless, the lens still costs around $, therefore think twice what do you need it for. Easily beats the old Minolta 50mm/f 1.7 in sharpness and turns to be a handy walk-around lens. Feels extremely cheap and plastic, unlike any other lens I have (minus one star). Will last for some time though because the front glass element is hidden. Good for weddings and trips, cooperates with an external flash unit very well. In Alpha line, there is no real substitute for this price as f 1.8 is usable.

Very Good Lens

Dec 6, 2014

This is a very good lens for the money. After reading the other reviews I decided to give it a try. I was pleasantly surprised. I have been wanting a fast lens but prices were pretty high; then I saw this one. The auto focus is fast and accurate. The bokeh is great. It's very light since it is plastic. If you are on a budget, as I am, this lens is for you. The glass is tremendous. However, due to its plastic construction, I'm not sure how it will hold up in the long run. I'm not hard on my lenses anyway, so it should last me for quite some time. Buy it, you'll like it.

Light, small and good looking

Jun 2, 2011

This lens weighs almost nothing, adds very little bulk to the camera and while the focus action isn't damped, it focuses fairly smoothly. It really feels plasticy, but I guess that doesn't matter much. It looks good, works well with my VG-10 and E-Alpha adapter (although no autofocus with that combination). I haven't done formal tests, but the Bokeh looks pretty good (if a bit asymmetrical). On the VG-10 the iris action is unacceptably steppy, so forget about changing aperture in the middle of a shot. but other then that I'm happy. Looks good for the price paid.

I am the volunteer photographer for a local cat shelter. I go around to the various foster homes to photograph rescued cats and kittens. I use 2 Sony cameras: the A55p and the A35. The 35 f1.8 sony lens is fast focusing under any lighting condtion and i get great results even at the higher ISO settings. It is very lightweight and easy to carry around. It is my current lens of choice for this purpose. It is made of plastic...but am not climbing mountains or out on safari! I carry my cameras in lowepro bags. I highly recommend this fast prime lens.

It has been a couple of weeks since I got it and this thing has never left my camera. Lightweight, very sharp and excelent colors. Before I bought this lens I went thru my photos and 95% of them were actually 24mm focal length so 50mm would have been too long for my style. Got 35mm adjusted my style by taking 2 steps back and it is perfect for me. Very good for walk around photography. Indoors shots are good as well. Price is great,.I have no problem with plastic mount at all, just wish it has SSM focus motor, but for the price I'll take SAM.

Super IQ

Dec 26, 2011

What more would I want from a lens? It is compact, featherweight, build accordingly to its price point, comes with a hood, fast, and most of all, has an incredibly high image quality concerning color accuracy, fast focus, sharpness and distortion. A must have! If you were a minolta user and love your 50mm 1.7f, be prepared to put it forward after you buy this gem. I have read people stating the build quality is not up to their standards. Well, this is why there is a 35mm 1.4f lens for a lot more money (and no improvement in IQ).
