Loving it so far, mostly for video

Dec 9, 2013

I miss my EX1, or rather, i miss the parfocal smooth ENG zoom lens that goes with such a camera. It's something we're missing in the interchangeable lens market. At the moment, sony is the only one making decent range power zooms, but they're not even constant max aperture. The 24-200mm equivalent F2.8 lens of the RX10 was by far the most attractive thing to both myself, and probably everyone else who saw the first spec sheet. The pairing of the ... Show More

The complete package

Apr 28, 2014

I have been in broadcast television for close to 30 years and this camera is amazing. I've used the stills for head shots which then are then chopped and cut for full screen graphics. And while we use mainly C-300s and 5D MKIIIs now, I've slipped in a couple of 60P slo-mo slider shots with the RX10 and no one knows the difference. I'm not saying the Sony can stand side by side and do the same things consistently but in the right hands it's a good... Show More

Trading in my trusted Nikon DSLR kits for something more practical, I was about to purchase the Panasonic Lumix DMC Fz1000, but when I handled it in the B&H store I was disappointed by the light, cheap, plasticky feel. It was a matter of seconds; I just picked it up handled it, wondered if this was a dummy unit, and put it back down. Looked great on paper but not in real life. After that, once I started researching the various sensor sizes with t... Show More

Destined to be a Classic

Jan 9, 2014

My review is a bit jumpy and all over the place so be warned- just calling it as it comes to me and I see it: Sony's best cameras used to be just fixed lens digicams prior to buying Minolta and expanding the interchangeable lens NEX and Alpha system. Cybershot used to be the star of the show. The encore has begun. They have the most experience in fixed lens digicams in the world in my opinion- and the RX10 shows it. The Cybershot division is on a... Show More

love it--but a problem

Mar 12, 2014

I researched cameras for about a year before deciding of the RX10. I have an older Nikon that I really liked, but wanted to get away from changing lenses, after taking a kayak trip with my son. I was constantly changing lenses trying to get some wildlife shots along with landscape shots. That's when I started looking at something that would accomplish both well. I also wanted to get something that would take good videos as well. No camera that I ... Show More

I recently bought the Sony HX300 thinking/hoping it would be the answer to my photographic prayers, but it turned out to be somewhat of a letdown, not because of how it worked but rather because I didn't have my expectations in line.Like the other bridge cameras I have owned - Nikon P500, Canon Powershot S3 IS - I was simply expecting too much from the HX300. Long lenses + small sensors = mediocre images. I had been fixated on zoom power so long ... Show More

More than I expected

I bought a Panasonic GX1 a year or so ago, for occasions when I might happen upon a grab shot, but did not want to carry my Canon DSLRs. They Panasonic is a nice solid little camera, but has an annoyingly noisy shutter, somewhat clumsy ergonomics, and I've never been very pleased with the picture quality. I'm not much of a videographer, but if I were, the truly poor performance of the GX1 in capturing video would have been an instant deal breaker... Show More

Very Happy with my Purchase

Dec 12, 2013

At the time I became aware of this camera, I wasn't shopping for a new camera. Once, I read about the Sony DSC RX10 with the excellent Carl Zeiss 24 to 200 fixed lens, electronic viewfinder (EFV), and more, I became very interested. I was a bit tired of packing a camera and 2 heavy lens when on vacation. I wanted something with excellent photo quality but more portable. Whenever, I make a purchase of this magnitude, I want to research everything ... Show More

Great for my need

Apr 4, 2014

I work with Nikon full frame & CMOS cameras when not using 2 1/4 film cameras. I was looking for a great TRAVEL camera that would be light weight with: a decent sized sensor, a viewfinder, a good zoom range with a fast lens (f2.8), work well at night or in dark interiors, and have an articulating screen. The RX10 answered all those demands & more. I carried it all day without feeling encumbered. Remember, I am used to DSLR with heavy lenses; so b... Show More

Sony RX10 has promise!

Jan 11, 2014

I purchased a RX10 from a local camera store. After two weeks of trying to figure out the settings and setup, with going to the store three times to get clarification I was fed up. The store personnel knew very little about it. I thought Nikon makes bad manuals, they appear very good to what Sony had for this camera. And there is no dvd and their online help had little to offer and I had to refer to other sony models online help to get some clues... Show More

Followup on RX10 Has Promise review

Mar 18, 2014

After further use of this product I am disappointed. The pluses are the design and build quality, the 2.8 lens and zoom range. In any auto mode it tends to shoot everything at 2.8 which limits creativity. The limited range of the tiltable screen in only a vertical range can be frustrating. It is very, very slow to record raw images, even with high end card. So rapid shooting is slow manually in raw. Noise and sharpness are not near the quality of... Show More

The Does Everything Camera

Nov 25, 2014

I now own the Sony RX100M3, a6000, A7, and now the RX10. I find myself naturally gravitating to the RX10, not matter whether it is for video, portraits, candids, street photography, travel, kids, or whatever, unless I need the extra resolution and tonal range of the A7, pocketability of the RX100M3, or focus speed of the a6000.The RX10 is just that good and the lens is amazing sharp. One of the reasons I got it was not only for video and all-in-o... Show More

Everything I ask....it does well!

Though I bought this camera several months ago, I wanted to wait to review it until I had taken my full month cruise, and vacation to the far east. Learning to shoot a camera with this much potential is slow, and I was lucky to find a great book, (Photographer's Guide To The Sony DSC-RX10 by Alexander S White, The camera does everything perfectly, and actually improves upon that if you use it at it's best settings. Works for ENG / documentary Filmmaking

Jul 10, 2014

The RX10 works great for me for handheld ENG, documentary filmmaking as well as filming action sports on a tripod (I've only used this camera in video mode.) For handheld I use a cheap flash mount bracket with a Manfrotto quick release adapter (so that I can quickly move from hand held bracket to tripod). I have the Sony XLR-K1M adapter attached to one of the cold shoe ports on the bracket. I also have a Sennheiser G3 receiver attached for use wi... Show More

Really disappointed with this camera

Dec 3, 2013

I'll keep this review short. My first day of shooting produced a few good macros and countless wasted landscape shots. The landscapes at 100% showed massive aberrations, globs of colors about five feet tall by three feet wide in the shadows, mixed in with softball-sized square pixels in midtones. In bright sunlight, the camera produced very soft images that were so bad that I packed the camera to be sent back as soon as I saw the results. There is a... Brilliant

Jul 26, 2015

I bought this for travel, not wanting to lug my heavy Nikon DX system aboard planes, trains and boats. I've only used it two weeks, and we have a big trip to Alaska coming up, so this review is tentative. But so far in casual use I find it quite admirable. The IQ seems slightly superior to the Sony RX100 I have, and of course the zoom reaches twice as far. Handling was easy to learn, particularly coming from the RX100. I use Auto mode frequently,... Another Nice Sony

Dec 10, 2013

After having been delighted with previous Sony purchases (RX1 & RX100), I decided that this camera would be a fine addition to my collection. I find that this camera is more than capable of fine-art quality 11x14 and perhaps 16x20 prints (I shoot a Hasselblad digital camera and up to 8x10 film, so know what acceptable quality is). This camera excels as a walk around camera or a light-weight unit to carry on a hike through the woods. Because of th... Show More

Fabulous camera

Jan 13, 2015

Have been a pro photographer for 40+ years and used Hasselblad and Carl Zeiss lenses for many years; getting back to a Zeiss lens on this camera has been pure joy. I've been shooting digital for 14 years; this is by far the best digital camera I have ever used and really does challenge the Hasselblads I used when shooting film. Camera is easy to use, fairly easy to learn - compact enough to carry almost anywhere, yet the 200 mm reach of the lens ... Show More

Photographic and Video Tool

This camera strikes me as a quality tool. It is not a small pocket camera. It has a reassuring heft to it with excellent build quality. Still images and Video exceed my expectations. While I was at it I purchased the Carl Zeiss 62mm UV filter as well as the Tiffen Digital HT neutral density filter kit and Digital HT Circular Polarizer. These are of fantastic quality and work like a gem. The internal video mics are great for indoor use, but outdoo... Show More

This is a great little camera loaded with features. The viewfinder and LCD monitor are crisp and clear, the lens is fast and it is just as capable taking stills or video. I also really like that Sony added the LCD display panel on top for a quick check of shutter speed and aperture. I traveled to Peru with this camera and loved it. I only had it a couple of days before the trip but the controls are so stright forward I had no issues. I even gave it to a couple of locals to use while I was unable to shoot. They loved it and both had very little photography experiance. This camera does take good photos. It is just not what I need. The focal length was not long enough and did not catch enough light for shooting on a cloudy day. I found shooting at the full focal length objects were not sharp enough. Also, the zoom is slow to respond and the bohek is OK but not to my liking. I owe a SONY RX1R and was looking for another SONY with similar controls to make shooting between the 2 cameras easy. I think through croppi... Show More
