Great Optics, Ok plastics

Apr 17, 2013

I absolutely love this lens, the optics are difinitely worth more than $xxx, but construction is a bit of a letdown overall. Of course as for under $500 range, it's an awesome lens with an OK set of materials. I really like the way it performs. It is sharp throughout the entire zoom range and doesn't distort. At least not enough for it to be visible. The focusing system is also very fast and is much quieter than on 18-55mm kit lens that I used to... Show More

Nice mate for the A77

Feb 13, 2012

I haven't seen the review I posted a couple of weeks ago, so here is a recap and update. Since the image stabilization is built into the Sony DSLR's, this classic inexpensive optic pairs very nicely with the A77. The central sharpness (even wide open) is high enough to capitalize on the 24MP resolution of the APS-C sensor such that you can take a cropped 10MP 500mm equivalent shot with this 10oz glass handheld. Since the A77's EVF provides for 13... Show More

Excellent all around lens!

May 1, 2013

I use this on my Sony A57 for mainly photographing my pets and some outdoor wildlife shots or portrait photography. I love that it goes down to 4.0, but only up till about 75mm. I plan on eventually upgrading to either the Sigma 50-500mm or 120-400mm for more serious wildlife photography, but in the mean time this quiet lens lets me get close to birds, lizards, and coyotes. Pros Sharp Fast and quiet AF Light Tracking Focus works really well Compa... Show More

It served me quite well

May 13, 2011

I bought this lens alongside my first DSLR and it quickly parked the kit lens in the bag for a while. It is fast, takes good shots and it is a nice first zoom/telephoto for beginning DSLR users. It comes with a hood, which makes it look cool and blocks the sun and outside light. I ended up parking this lens as I got a lens that was slightly better and was a superset of the range it encompassed, but for $200 this is a good buy and if you can get i... Show More

Superzoom?

Jan 31, 2012

Ever wish you had a nice 10 oz 500mm f/5.6 in your bag? Well, coupling this baby with the new Sony A77 you can crop out the center of the frame (which is nearly tack sharp wide open) and voila! True, the image softens a bit outside the central sweet spot, but only near the frame edges where the chromatic abberactions reign on high. Of course, the A77 corrects CA on the jpegs and most RAW converters will have a lens correction plugin soon to relieve the effort of manual correction. It may not be Pro Glass, but it sure performs well, independent of price.

Filter rotates with focusing

Mar 11, 2013

It's a good lens except for one annoying characteristic - the filter rotates when the lens is focused. This is not the case with my other two Sony DT lenses: SAL1680Z (Zeiss 16-80 - I LOVE this lens) and SAL35F18 (non-zoom 35 mm). I use flip-out lens-caps on all my lenses I highly recommend those), and it's a bit strange on this lens to have the flipped out lens-cap rotate as you focus. If you're using a polarizing filter with this lens, you have to re-adjust the polarizer angle after you focus - a pain in the neck. Otherwise it's a great lens.

Wow

Apr 12, 2011

I had low expectations of this lens going into it - but since it was offered at a special rate with my SONY A580 - I took advantage thinking I could use it on rainy days. I have to admit that I'm entirely surprised by it's abilities given it's price point. Razor sharp images and a punch of contrast that I wasn't expecting. I shoot fashion and beauty - and I'm blown away by what I've seen this lens do. I find myself packing it on shoots all the time now - despite having it's much more expensive siblings. Definitely worth the money spent on it.

Product receive is every thing promised,

Jan 6, 2011

I am sure there are lenses out there that may be of better quality but at what price range, and would they serve my needs better than this lens I dont know. This lens is equal to the quality of the camera and superior to my ability, so if I were to choose a lens of this type and price I would choose this lens again. The only reason for four stars instead of five is I have no experience with any other lens of this type for the Sony Alpha 55 I recently purchased.

excellent wau

Aug 20, 2013

This lens is very good for such a low price, the color is naturally strong and well balanced, it usio with my sony a580, and focus necessary, the blur in the background is beautiful, has a nice bokeh, is lightweight and very easy to manage, especially for portrait, skin color is necessary. Glass is excellent, it works fine in f 5 onwards, I use a 125 speed to freeze the image. sources placed the photo taken f4, 5 and s 125. [email protected].

Nice for the Price

Nov 8, 2011

The version II 55-200mm is nice, lightweight, inexpensive general-purpose telephoto zoom. As stated in Sony's literature, it makes a nice starter companion to the 18-55mm kit lens. While the images produced are sharp and contrasty with good color, the lens does not feel as good as the 18-55 -- the zoom is not as silky smooth. This would make it somewhat more difficult to use effectively for video work. But, for general photography, it's a nice lens.

Great first lens

Oct 26, 2013

I gave my son my Sony a55 camera when I upgraded to the a77 which I absolutely love. I kept all of my high end lenses and purchased this lens for him. It is a great lens, perfect for up close and distance. One thing about Sony lenses I have learned over the years that even their less expensive lenses still take great photos! My son is using this lens for family photos and trips that they take.

Great Budget Lens

Jan 2, 2014

I got this with my Sony Alpha A-65 with a discount. After using it for a few days, I have to say I am impressed, it takes very clear pictures and has some decent f stops. Even for being cheaper the lens is surprisingly solid. It feels nice in your hands and it does not feel cheap. I will test it out somemore this weekend and update with some photos from a shoot I am doing.

Good quality lens for mid range shots

Jun 26, 2014

This is a good kit lens for medium range. Seems a little slow to focus, but the focus is good. I bought it with a Sony SLT77. I like the ability to go from portrait distance to 30 or 40 feet away and have my subject well framed. You don't get a prime lens for the price this sells for (mine was $*0 with the purchase of the camera.) but it is good zoom for many occasions.

Pretty darn good for a beercan!

Jan 30, 2012

My wife is hard to please. I bought her a Sony Alpha 65 to replace her aging Minolta SLR which she used with a 70mm fixed. This 55-200 is smaller and lighter then the 70mm fixed, and she loves it! The autofocus is fast and crisp and quiet. The included glare shroud is a nice plus although it isn't pretty.

Excellent lens and great value!

I got this to go with my a330. It's very responsive to focus and takes great pictures. It wasn't expensive at all, but performs like it was twice the price. We take photos at a nearby lake, and this lens is great for both close up and distance. And it doesn't feel cheap at all.

Very Good Telephoto Lens

Dec 15, 2016

I love this lens. It is great to be able to take good photos of far away things. It is also pretty fast, to get to 55 mm at f4.0 is good for using in low light. When pointed at nearby objects, it often cannot focus on the object and has a very shallow depth of field.

Affordable zoom lens. Great Sony.

Feb 15, 2010

I bet this is the most wonderful 55-200 zoom lens for rookies belong Canon, Nikon, and Sony. The AF motor is quick, most silent. It worth its price, and very good for a new photographer who just have interest in taking photos and have limit money.

Price is Right for quality zoom

Jan 25, 2016

I bought this 55-200mm to compliment my 18-55mm kit lens. This covers a full range with just two lenses. This is not a premier lens but fits the bill with photographers on a budget. I recommend this lens to other budget minded individuals.

Fits my needs perfectly

Dec 24, 2014

I use the lens on my Mirrorless cameras and it works great with no problems. One of the greatest things about the lens is its small size which makes my hand held shots eaiser to take.I can't find any fault with the lens given how I use it.

Nice Upgrade

This is my first new lenses since I had my sony a200 for almost 4 years now. This lenses is definitely worth the investment especially if you're taking pictures at an event, where the photographer can take pictures from a distance.

A nice, all-round telephoto zoom

Jun 21, 2010

This is a fine performing zoom lens. The build is lightweight and feels kinda cheap but it works well. The range makes a perfect two lens system with the 18-55 Sony. I have no regrets with this purchase.

This lens is great. I can have a brighter image at a greater zoom without having to raise the ISO a lot, and can capture things much further away. Good focusing abilities too.
