Excellent Lens

Aug 13, 2012

This lens is great for any Sony Alpha user. I've had my Alpha 350 for over 5 years now - and this Sony Macro lens is a perfect addition, for those of us who are 'just fine' with a small-chip camera. The ability (on the lens itself) to switch from AF to MF is a huge help. I can get right on top of my subject, with AF - then switch to MF to capture great shots. I've only had the lens a few weeks; but thus far I've found it to be easy to use - and a... Show More

Sony Digital Technology at its best

Jan 8, 2013

I bought this lens in December together with my Sony SLT-A65 digital camera-wonder... Sony had a special Holiday's promotion and the price I paid for it at B&H was just unbelievably low... In olden days during the Analog Era, I paid double the price for macro lenses of similar optical quality... It's a Macro lens that allows me to get very close, very close to the subject if need be... However, I can also use it as a prime lens for general photog... Show More

Must have... almost

Feb 26, 2015

A very cost effective lens and in my opinion a must have lens on a APS-C camera. My initial work with this lens simply impressed me due to its versatility in coverage and closeups. In fact it's macro capabilities are quite exceeded my expectations. If I am right, teh lens can get almost as close as a centimeter or so to the object. I was using SAL 50mm 1.8 almost exclusively and now SAL 30/2.8 is almost as good as the 50mm but for it's f2.8. So i... Show More

Great Closeup and nice standard lens

Dec 29, 2010

This lens, when cropped into APS-C cameras (non fullframe, that is, every sony camera, except A850 and A900), the viewing angle is the same as a standard 50mm lens. For this, it is great for a walkaround prime lens. Its Macro capabilities are awesome, if you can afford to go as close as to a few millimeters of your subject (less than an inch, between the focused area and the front element). Focusing motor is not great, but does not get in the way of the photographer, except for its strange creeky sound. Not nice 49mm lens threads. Really small.

Great Macro lens for beginner

Jul 2, 2012

We purchased this macro lens for our daughter who is a beginner photographer using a Sony Alpha. She has taken some great photos with the lens that she wasn't able to with the lens that came with the camera as the standard lens would constantly try and focus on the object close up. The macro lens provides great up close photos while providing great clarity and crispness of the object i.e. flower, insect etc... Great affordable beginner lens for her to practice with.

This is a great lens

Mar 8, 2010

I'm fairly new to DSLR photography and this is my first prime lens and whilst I probably don't yet have a sufficiently critical eye, I have to say I feel I'm getting excellent results so far, both for macro and landscape photography. One photo in particular, an extremely close-up shot of a beautiful red rose, really had the WOW factor for me and allowed me to feel I was making progress. I really like this lens and feel it's very reasonably priced.

So happy with this lens

Jun 3, 2012

I just bought this macro lens a couple of weeks ago and already I have changed the way I am taking photos. For the price, Sony has come through on very good technology yet allows anyone to indulge in marco photography. The minimum depth of field really makes you work hard to focus that particular shot but it is so worth it. It makes for interesting bokeh. It pushes you beyond the safe zone and makes you work for the perfect photo.

A dream!

Mar 11, 2013

Couldn't wait to check out the B&H superstore in NYC! I was all set to purchase just this lens when I fell in love with the camera body it was on and my hubby bought it for me too. I have had a blast taking up close shots with this lens. It is perfect for the amateur photographer to really get a feel for what you can do with up close shots. Use it with manual focus to really add interest to your pictures!

A useful wide angle and macro lens

Jul 19, 2011

I needed a lens that is light weight; good wide angle for indoor gatherings; takes a fine macro as I use it as a notepad to remember labels (from bottles to posters); And it had to be 2.8 or better for low light. All of that was found in this inexpensive lens. I have added a Sony x0.7 converter that I had from my previous Sony. So in effect it is a 21M28 now which covers a very wide range indoors.

Good Lens

Jun 25, 2010

This is my first prime. It's a great lens for the price, and stopped down it doesn't look half bad. For those looking for a Macro lens, I suggest you go for the 50mm; because the distance at which this lens works well in Macro is quite close. For those looking for a good all-rounder to get them started on the road to better photos, this is just the ticket.

This lens expands my photographic library

Dec 15, 2016

I have a special purpose for my new 30mm lens: 7,000 slides waiting to be digitized. Scanning takes over two minutes per slide, a real bummer. But this lens on my Sony A77, attached to the Nikon ES-1 slide copier makes a beautiful high-resolution digital copy in seconds! I shoot in raw and tweak it, if necessary, in Lightroom, and convert it to JPG.

Dark, Dark, Dark but great quality

Sep 27, 2011

Very good quality but for a 2.8 lens, it's dark. I had 3 lights on a macro object and open at 2.8 but it just seem as if it was not getting any light.Compared to the 50mm and 100mm, this lens is just plain dark. Built quality is cheap as it is *. Also, it is 30mm so you really have to get close to the object to get a 1:1 ratio.

Upgrading our Sony DSLR-A100 Digital Camera

Mar 1, 2016

Our original lens for our DSLR-A100 provided great shots, except - for the closeup pictures. The ability to get closeup pictures is very important to us because of our three (3) 'fur' kids. As they say, ...a picture is worth a thousand words... see what the sony7 30mm F/2.8 Alpha A-Mount Macro Prime Lens allowed us to do.

Great Macro learning lens

May 17, 2014

The pictures are sharp once you get the hang of the back and forth focusing , better to use manual focus if your eyesight is good. This is a very good lens to just step into macro photography. So when you put down those big dollars you will not have to waste time learning your limits and have more fun shooting.

great prime lens!

Jul 6, 2010

This is my only prime lens using a digital camera and I am very satisfied with it! Please notice that I am quite picky with lenses and cameras although I do not have a large budget for them. I am delighted that Sony could come up with a lens like this: Consistent, satisfactory, and relatively inexpensive!!!

Great affordable lens.

Feb 6, 2011

Great affordable macro lens that's great for portraits also. Most review always point of the build quality, and yes, it doesn't compare to more expensive lenses, but it's not as bad as some reviews say. For the price, it's a great lens to get into macro photography. Highly recommended.

Good starter macro

May 13, 2011

This is an inexpensive Macro that you can take pictures from about 5 inches away. I use it to take pictures of stuff I am selling at online auction sites. I've had some good success with some macro shots and this also takes pretty good portraits as an added bonus. Not bad for $200.

small, handy and useful

Mar 10, 2013

This is a small and handy lens primarily for use as a close-up macro lens. It is reasonably fast focussing and certainly does a good job on sharpness. I agree with other reviewers that it is primarily for stationary close-ups. For its cost it is a good investment.

Great Macro Lens!

Feb 8, 2011

This is a must buy for the photographer on a budget. The image quality is really good for the price you pay and the shots come out good. The working distance is quite short, but I haven't run into any major problems with getting the shots that I want.

Terrible auto focus

May 29, 2011

I am very disappointed with the auto focus of this lens. I get good focus on about 10% of the macro photos I take with it. The rest are terribly blurry. I have been very happy with my results from other lenses, so this lens is definitely the problem.

Goof lens at a budget price

Feb 16, 2011

I use this lens with a dedicated ring light for nature macro photos of insects, small flowers and mushrooms. Results so far have been very good. Without the supplemental lighting, a faster lens would be required, such as f/1.4 or faster.

Nice crisp photo's. As it should, it allows me to get very close to my subject. My test subject was very surprised at how much detail of her face it brought out. Looking forward to further exploration of its capabilities this summer.
