unstable at height when supporting 5D MK IV

Nov 12, 2018

Although said to support 12lbs, when extended to a usable height this tripod is very unstable with ~10lb of camera / battery pack / mic on top. I did not recall problems in the past using a 5D Mk ii video rig, but now either newer makes of the SunPack 7000 or increased weight of the 5d Mk iv has resulted in poor performance of these tripods reported by each of our Mk iv users.

Stripped Lever/Handle

May 16, 2018

I use a Nikon D5200 with a Tamron 18-400 lens. I've had problems with the camera slowly twisting in the quick release plate. Also problems holding the camera in position. In trying to keep the camera in a desired position, I tightened the screw on the main lever/handle too much and stripped it. Now it will not tighten at all. Plastic and metal are not a good mix. The weight capacity for this tripod should be minimal. It was not up to the job of handling a regular DSLR.

No no and no

Used one time, tripod part fell apart, would not recommend unless your using for a smart phone, I gave it 2 stars because the monopod works, and that's really why I got it anyway, the rest is junk. Buy something else.

Not so much...

Jun 5, 2017

Purchased this product two months ago. Thought it would be an ideal product given the tri-monopod aspect. Saw decent reviews on youtube as well as on B&H so thought I'd give it a try. Only received one quick release plate with product. The monopod is difficult to manipulate, the locking extensions are not easy to lock in place especially after you've got your camera attached. Was able to use it a few times before the pan/tilt locking handle broke... Show More

Not a heavy weight tripod

Mar 30, 2017

I purchased this item to use with Canon 1D Mark IV which is a hefty camera. The tripod is not even heavy duty enough to hold the camera in an level position. I have to compensate by shortening a leg. It also feels as if the quick release plate is going to pull out. I won't use it with this camera. I did give it 1 star because I can still use it with my T4i I guess. But I already have two light weight tripods for that purpose.

It's not bad for the price. The head of it is a bit wobbly unfortunately. But overall it does what it needs to do.

Unimpressed with this version

Mar 21, 2017

I am a portrait photographer but I suffer from a bit of hand-shake so I use my tripod with my heavier lenses to ease the weight burden. My first 7KTM lasted just under a year, before the rubber stopper inside the leg (the bit that allows the legs to lock) fell out causing the leg to slide in and out and loose function. I thought it was no big deal, and can rig it up to use for my speed light, but still needed something. I really love the quick re... Show More

Bad product

Aug 9, 2016

I bought this product and after two months of use, the leg wouldn't lock. I called B&H and they sent me a replacement. A few months later, the same issue occurred. I tried calling Sunpak for my warranty but they did not answer the phone. I see others had the same issue as well. I am extremely disappointed with the quality of this product.

Heavy camera holder for the super still shots.

Jun 17, 2016

It is hard to write a review of a tripod so here it goes. This is a heavy duty camera holding tank. I have a Nikon D750 with the lens, battery grip and remote flash mounted this tripod holds it all with all the support needed for my camera setup. I almost knocked this camera setup over on the old cheap tripod so this is a must for my needs. I am glad I made the purchase and I am not looking back.

i wouldn't buy this product again

Jun 5, 2016

I literally set up the tripod one time and when I was taking it down 2 of the leg locks broke and I had to throw it away. I bought this particular tripod because I owned one form the same manufacturer already and had good luck with it. Unfortunately, that one also broke this weekend so now I am in the hunt for two new ones. ughhhhh.

Great for the price

May 31, 2016

This is a great tripod for the price. The legs are a whole lot better thought out than the head, but even it is not bad. I love all the little gadget features on this thing. Every tripod should come with a carry handle like this one does. It lacks a little in stability with heavy loads and in high winds. It is still a better tripod than ones that cost twice as much. I replaced the head on mine since most of the instability came from it. The legs ... Show More

Works as advertised

Apr 19, 2016

The only reason that this is not getting five stars is that there is no balancing level on the top camera connector. What is there works fine, but is not up by where the camera attaches. This leaves the adjustment for the horizon based only upon the eye of the camera operator. I'd prefer to be able to level the camera instead of just the tripod.

Excellent tri-pod for the money

This is a very sturdy trip-pod and the fact that if can also be used as monopod ads to its usefulness.

Good quality

Nov 2, 2015

I use this product for video and photo purposes and it suits me great. The fact that you have your monopod and tripod with you at all times makes this product great. So far I have not found anything that I dislike about the product, however a little more aluminum and less plastic would be good.

Sturdy, but not without major faults.

Oct 26, 2015

The tripod is heavy and well-constructed, but the clips don't hold consistently at all, such that one or more legs can collapse, sending your very expensive camera hurling towards the earth. One clip upon first use lost a clear plastic shim that should have been housed inside the clips themselves. I stuffed the shim back inside, but wonder if it isa matter of time before it or others dislodge. Disappointing considering the care taken to make an interesting hybrid tripod/unipod.

Very nice!

Oct 9, 2015

Lightweight, easy to carry, and never cumbersome. My only issue is that with a large camera the platform that angles the camera up/down slowly falls to the bottom with the weight on top. Screws are easy to use, one person setup is not an issue.

My Height

Sep 25, 2015

I'm an amateur photographer and the tripod will be used as such. Finally an inexpensive tripod that sets the camera at my height (70-74) and is reasonably stable at those heights. Even with the center column partially raised. I had to fashion weight (my camera bag) on the bottom. Used a long nut with an eye-bolt attached to one end and screwed the other end to the 1/4-20 bolt provided on the bottom of the center column. Used a small hook to attach bag to eye-bolt. Good equipment for the price since it was also on sale.

Sturdy and useful

Sep 20, 2015

I bought this to replace a really cheap tripod that had broken, and this more than met my expectations. It's great for the price: it's sturdy and can change to any height. The levels on the tripod and camera mount are great, the one on the camera mount works when you use the monopod, which is also a plus that stores neatly in the middle of the tripod. It pans smoothly, based on how much I've used it. Just be delicate when you extend and contract the legs, some comments on here said the plastic part that keeps the latch tight can fall out, making the legs useless.

Leg-lock broke in one week

Sep 8, 2015

I used this tripod probably for 3-4 nights of very safe and gentle usage, when spontaneously, while retracting the legs to take off from a shoot last night, one of the joint tension locks just snapped (internally, as I can see nothing wrong with it). So now one of the three legs is incapable of extending up beyond a few feet, as the middle lock is apparently broken.I've contact B&H as to what my options are now, but I'm not sure I'd want to exchange for an item that broke on me in 4 days.
