Constant disk ejections (listen to the negative reviews!)

Aug 15, 2019

Really really wanted to like this dock for my mid2011 iMac since my computer lacks usb 3. The drive worked fine except when the computer entered sleep mode. I store most of my files on large hard drives and keep them plugged in all the time. Previously I had an older 4tb Seagate drive with thunderbolt adapter and used it like this for 4 years with NO issues whatsoever. This dock however would drop connection while computer was in sleep mode overn... Show More

Almost perfect Thunderbolt dock...

Jan 28, 2016

The only negative to this dock is the lack of a eject button to gently lift a drive out of the bay. Not a deal breaker though. For the price of this dock you would think they would have included that. Oh and speaking of the price I guess that is another negative but it's the only bay I found that has TWO Thunderbolt ports! The other one out there only has one and that is a deal breaker for me since I use a monitor as my last item in the chain. On... Show More

Poorly Engineered

Sep 3, 2016

I like OWC products, but this one leaves a lot to be desired. The on/off buttons for the individual drives are flimsy, require holding down to power on/off, and wobble in their own seats so that it is possible for the edge of the button to become wedged beneath the faceplate. Furthermore, and more critically, the Thunderbolt outlets do not firms seat the wires, so that if the wires are jostled or touched, the connection is interrupted. This is a ... Show More

This thing sucks

Dec 18, 2017

I've used the Highpoint version for years without a problem, being able to hot-swap disks as needed. This dock causes the the disks to disconnect seemingly at random (without properly unmounting it). When hot-swapping, the fresh drive either doesn't mount at all, or it causes the first drive to disconnect. (The instruction manual specifically says this shouldn't happen when using Thunderbolt). It's also total hit-or-miss as to whether the drives... Show More

Just started using, but working well so far

Mar 7, 2016

Easy enough to set up and use. And the price was certainly reasonable compared to other options out there. I purchased the bay to continue using some drives I used to run in my older MacPro. I was able to pull them from the MacPro drive bays and drop them into this bay. I did wind up placing a folded up business card next to the drive in one of the drive slots to eliminate a buzzing (vibration) noise. Other than that, when the drive isn't being accessed, it runs nice and quiet. Looking forward to getting a lot of use from this bay.

Best Toaster on the market...

Jan 24, 2016

Thunderbolt is the only way to go with external drives; it makes USB3 obsolete. If you're not familiar with Thunderbolt 2, the two Thunderbolt 2 Ports can be used in aggregation, each doing 10Gbit/s to create a single 20Gbit/s channel. This OWC is a little pricey, but once you have it you'll forget about the shells. Another benefit over USB3 is that TB is more intelligent. As with internal drives, after a period of non use the drives will shut down, and as soon as you need them they will come right back.

High Quality but Not Perfect

Sep 22, 2016

Bought three of these for work. Occasionally they won't turn on so you have to unplug it or switch a port, wait 30 seconds, it will then turn on. Also the drives seem to run VERY hot. When you pull one out you can barely hold the thing with your bare hand. This is across all of them. Ive had a half dozen brands and these are the hottest by far. Not sure if they're spinning fast or sending more energy to them or what but it's something. Otherwise have had decent luck with them so far after about 4 weeks.

Keeps ejecting drives

Aug 22, 2016

This docking bay kept ejecting both of my HGST 4TB drives while I was working on the files, and also when on standby. It does not eject them properly either. I am afraid losing my work if this keeps happening. I also wish the power cord was just a bit longer. There is an outlet right underneath my computer which sits on my desk, and the power cord barely reaches. I am returning it and ordering another one. Hopefully this was just a defective drive, and the next one works well.

Two docks in one!

May 25, 2016

After years of having two separate docks that also worked off of Firewire 400 and daisy chained through an external hard drive I broke down and purchased this dual drive. So far I've only used it a few times but working well and using Chronosync with it has been terrific. It operates on thunderbolt so very quick. Takes up less real estate on my desk too. It was a little pricey but glad I made this purchase.

Great machine for a Non-Techy guy (not sure about speed, etc

Mar 21, 2017

I use this to read backup hard drives from storage. Great for a small one photographer studio like myself for a more efficient and less expensive way to backup. I replace the Lacie External drives with new 3.5 Seagate Baracuda drives and store the full drives in a safe until I need to break them out to find an image for clients. I bought the Xcellon 2.5/3.5 Hard Drive cases for storage of the backup drives.

Perfect for Drive Swaps!

Apr 5, 2016

I love this on the desk to have access to multiple hard drives and use Thunderbolt Speeds (for the SSD). I've got a 1TB SSD I use when traveling in a 2.5 easy enclosure that is USB3. Then when I get home, can easily pop it out and drop it in the bag to keep on working at blazing speeds. Seems really well built, I love that there is on/off switches for each bay, and Thunderbolt is even better!!

Premium Price, Cheap Construction

Dec 7, 2016

Hard drives do not fit snugly into the bays, so they're free to flop about. There's no eject button, so swapping out delicate hard drives feels like a game of Jenga. The Thunderbolt ports on the back are loose, so if you bump the cable, the hard drives dismount. If I pay a premium price, I expect a premium product. This is barely one step above my $40 off-brand hard drive toaster.

Can't trust this expensive drive.

Feb 19, 2017

The Thunderbolt 2 ports only go up to USB 2 speeds although the USB 3 port seems to work up to spec. Also I get random warnings from Mac OSX disc not ejected properly on drives using this dock and even once when transferring data through the Thunderbolt 2 built in daisy chain ports.. I can't trust this drive enough to use it anymore and don't recommend buying it.

Solid product, would buy again

Aug 19, 2016

I'm giving this 4 stars because the lights and power buttons are a bit confusing, it's not always clean when a drive is powered on. Using with Thunderbolt and it's very fast. I think it's a BIT expensive but at this point it seems all Thunderbolt equipment is overpriced. It's a solid unit and I would buy it again.

Works great.

Dec 22, 2016

Only used this 3 times so far, but seems to do exactly what it states it would. A little more pricey than some of the other brands out there, but matches the mac nice, and comes with a thunderbolt cord. Wish there was an eject button to help the drives out of the dock when finished. Overall, great device.

Better than expected

Mar 29, 2017

It is very well-built, with the bulk of the case taking notes from Apple construction. Couple that with 2 separate power switches and 2 thunderbolt ports, and I don't think there is a better reader out there for the money. It has served my company well so far. Very fast and reliable.

I use the Drive Dock DUAL DRIVE BAY mainly for my music projects and loading of my sample libraries. with the thunderbolt interface it`s lightning fast and easy to use. For backups I just swap a drive and, voila, it is done. And it is not just cheap plastic. Nice piece of hardware.

Excellent solution for high-speed storage

Feb 14, 2016

If you have internal HDD's laying around, this can be an excellent, relatively inexpensive solution for high-speed storage (combined with SoftRaid Lite you can get a striped volume performance connected to your Mac at Thunderbolt2 speeds).

Really Good Thunderbolt 2 Dock

Mar 7, 2017

Got this Dock to use with my 2013 Mac Pro. Love it. I really like the separate power for each drive in the dock. Also really appreciate that you can daisy-chain in other thunderbolt devices. If you use thunderbolt 2 I recommend this dock.

Randomly unmounts drives and causes drive errors

Sep 1, 2016

Works as described. Very functional. The unit has a master power switch and two individual On/Off power buttons for each drive. These on/off buttons don't respond well. But this is not a show stopper.
