Great Lens for all around use!

Dec 29, 2011

I have a Sony A55. I've had this lens for about 2 weeks now and i'm generally happy with it's performance. I've observed that it has visible vignetting at the wide end, but it is easily correctable in Photoshop and is gone at about 24mm. I can see light softness at the telephoto end, but you really have to look at pictures at pixel level to see it. The focusing is fast, even though it is screw driven and it is not as loud as you could be lead to ... Show More

Totally Satisfied

I am an advanced amateur and bought this lens to broaden my flexibility for the shooting spectrum. I had been recently frustrated by missing key shots while changing lenses...I often carry two SLRs to avoid this, but thought this lens might work. Based on other comments on the sharpness of this lens, I ordered it but was still skeptical. On my last vacation trip I used this lens 90% of the time with my other SLR dedicated only to extra long telep... Show More

Perfect mid range lens for all uses

Jan 27, 2012

I'm so happy that when I purchased my A55 it came with this lens. I have used it extensively over the past year and am extremely satisfied with the results. A note that it is on a heavy side and you will notice it after a while. However you will have so much FUN taking pictures with it that it will hardly be a bother. The performance is sharp and the images are extremely clear. The auto-focus is a bit sluggish for my taste but if you're not in a ... Show More

The most versatile lens for Sony

Jun 14, 2008

If you are going to get only one lens for your Sony DSLR, and need to cover wide and tele, get this one, there's no better choice. Of course, it doesn't shine but the performance is quite impressive if you consider the range it covers. Autofocus on A700 is pretty fast, although a bit tricky in low light but that is to be expected. When light permits use f/8 for 18-100(ish) and f/11 above that for the sharpest results. Chromatic aberation could be... Show More

great value for the price

I purchased this lens for use as a telephoto lens and at the same time to replace the 18-70 mm kit lens that came with my Sony Alpha 100. The lens does not disappoint. It is a great all-purpose lens whose range covers most shooting situations. It is not overly large or heavy given its range. Resulting images have been sharp, but not as sharp as my Minolta 85mm f1.4, but that is to be expected. The results are better than the 18-70mm kit lens. The... Show More

First year lens worked great. Photos of all kinds in doors, outdoors, poor lighting bright light lens performed as expected. Soon there after lens auto focus continuously. It was always searching. Even after locking in it would try to adjust again. Using it on a A57. Bought extended warranty at time of purchase. These people have been very nice to deal with but I have returned A57 and this lens two times and it is still doing the same thing. Call... Show More

Great all around lens

Jan 8, 2013

I have owned this lens for about 1 1/2 years now. I bought it when I bought my Sony A35, and have used it as my primary lens ever since. I have other lenses that I use for specific tasks (super wide angle, super telephoto and a macro lens) but for 90% of my photos, I stick with this lens, and am quite happy. I have used this lens both for landscape photography, as well as for getting close up pictures of animals that I had no desire to get anywhe... Show More

I've had this lens now for a few years on my alpha55......now on an alpha65. A major step up from the kit lenses and i use it 99 percent of the time. Sharpness has been overall very good and I use It with confidence. City scapes have shown some barreling or pincushion which I could correct in photoshop. Skipped kit lens alltogether and got it for my new Sony A55 body. GREAT all around lens. Very good quality in both, still pictures and 1080 HD video mode, and right colors. Even not much distortion at max zoom rate. Very little CA. Very good build quality, should last long. Even not that big in size, as for this much zoom... I tried it in sRGB(default) color profile and Adobe RGB. Liked last one more than sRGB, which is a tad juicier and looks li... Show More

Fantastic All Around Lens

Jan 18, 2011

I am an amateur photographer and shoot mostly vacations and family events. After years of frustration with the quality of P&S cameras, I decided to take the plunge into DSLR land. I quickly realized how much I used the zoom on my camera and found out that (for me) changing lenses is a major hassle (carrying them, worrying about dust, and missed shots). My hope was that if I spent a few extra dollars on this lens it would give me the focal range I... Show More

GREAT lens, I HIGHLY recommend it

Aug 30, 2011

I had the Carl Zeiss 16-80 which is an excellent lens, but found I needed more reach when on vacation and didn't want to change lenses while walking around sightseeing and so I did a comparison between the Sony 18-250 vs. the CZ 16-80 vs. the Tamron 18-270. I am here to say the Sony 18-250 provided superior optical quality to the others! It was CLEARLY superior in color and clarity to the Tamron and even sharper in clarity to the CZ which was a s... This is my first Sony lens. All others are Minolta. I got this for my A700 and a trip to RMNP, CO. I wanted a light lens for hiking to shoot the wide scenics and also be able to get close to the wildlife, when needed. This did the job perfectly. I had already heard great things about the IQ, and it didn't disappoint. My only complaints might be that the zoom on my copy is very firm, but that does eliminate zoom creep. Excellent 1-lens solution

May 9, 2008

Recently purchased the Sony A350 (body only). I heard the kit lens is pretty mediocre so I was looking for a substitute. Read several reviews about the SAL18250 and I have heard good things. So I decided to give it a try. The lens sure doesn't disappoint. The construction is solid, and it feels just right when put on the A350. Photo quality is very good. There are some CA on both the wide end and telephoto end, but they can be easily fixed by stopping down the lens. And with the focal length this lens covers (27-375 35mm equiv.), it's perfect for travel when space and weight are limited.

LOVE THIS LENS!!

May 17, 2011

I bought this lens as an upgrade to my kit lens that came with my Sony a-700 and as a upgrade to the Minolta 70-300mm and 28-80mm. It'a a vast improvement! The picture quality is phenomenally better. It gives me better sharpness, contrast and saturation. It completely changed how I view my own photography. I shot a wedding the first day I owned it, the macro DOF was great on their rings and at the opposite end I got a sharp picture with great bokeh around them. My only regret is that I hadn't bought this sooner. Buy it... seriously, this lens will never leave the body!

Terrific so far

Feb 13, 2011

... I purchased this lens for a replacement of the stock lens that came with the Sony A33 camera kit. My first shooting with it was last night at my grand daughter's 13th birthday dinner. I had one picture that wasn't perfectly focused out of about 20 but the other pictures were amazing. This lens really works well with the camera and absolutely made a huge difference. Can't wait for the next shoot. I also like that it came with the lens hood. This lens is also a good weight, not too heavy. It feels very dependable not cheap. I would highly recommend purchasing it.

Perfectly clear shots

Aug 25, 2008

I needed a walkaround lens for my Sony A300. I could not have chose a better one. I am amazed at how sharp the pics are that I obtain. My Sony A300 has anti-shake built into the body, allowing handheld shots at very slow speeds. So in low light situations I I can obtain nice exposures without sacrificing sharpness with this lens. In good light, usually I can snap something in an instant, and count on a sharp exposure. The combination is terrific, both for close-ups and distance photography. So far I have no complaints and the lens lock is a very useful feature.

Useful, lightweight, All in One

Jul 28, 2008

I bought this lens upon the recommendations of several reviews that I've read and very glad I did so. Having this lens with you is so..very easy, although I do change lens often when needing an ultra-wide or ultra telephoto lens. I like to carry this one lens on trips, hiking or special events & sometimes for quick shooting when changing lens is inconvenient or impossible. It is very well made and solid and not very heavy. I also like the smaller diameter when using filters and that the lens front glass does not turn. Have not experienced any lens creep so far.

Good travel lens

Jan 10, 2012

Small light weight a great travel lens. I also have the Tameron 18-270 which is very similar. The Tameron has a faster auto focus and a slightly longer telephoto. The reason I got the Sony is the lens is less prone to extend by itself as you move around. You are obliged to lock the zoom on the Tameron and you don't really need to do that on the Sony. And when you lock the zoom, you can miss photo opportuniites as you fiddle around to unlock it. I wish it had more of an interior design and did not extend so much.

Compact and Versatile

Jun 18, 2015

I picked up this lens to use as the only lens on an African safari which has strict weight limits on luggage. I tested it out on a trip to the UK and used it indoors, outdoors, in all sorts of lighting conditions. Pictures were crisp and sharp and the wide range zoom allowed me to take shots from a moderate wide angle to long distance closeups. I am very pleased with the quality of the pictures at all focal lengths. The lens is a little slow, but that's a reasonable tradeoff for the versatile focal length.

Great lens.....but....

Jul 29, 2008

I am a wedding photographer and have found this lens to be a good over all lens. It keeps me from swapping lenses and allows me to have wide angle on my second camera body. Photos are sharp at all zoom levels and does not weigh down my camera. The only problem I have with it is when it comes to filters when the lens is wide open they can see parts of it in each of the corners. The one they try to sell you with this lens has that problem. There are thinner ones out there but they cost a lot more.

Awsome lens

Mar 7, 2008

I just received this lens. Its very sharp through out the entire zoom range. I'd say this is the sharpest lens that I have used, given the range. Color is good and bokeh is also very nice. Focus speed is good on my Sony A100, it hunts in extremely low light(my 18-70 kit lens hunts too). Otherwise, its not slower than my kit lens. If you use eyestart, by the time you compose your shot, your subjec will be in focus. Focus accuracy is excellent. I'd highly recommend this as excellent all rounder.

This is an excellent lens, very fast focus, sharp and clear photos, with very accurate colors thru all ranges. It isnt necessary to carry different lenses to cover different situations, this lens cover then all. I use it with my ILCA-77M2 mostl;y and it also works very well with my A-65 and the A-77. I have another SONY 18-250MM lens that I have used for 14 years with no problems, this last lens hepls to reduce changing lens to different cameras. I highly recommend this lens.

CAUTION ON SONY 18-250mm LENS

Jan 27, 2015

Sony only has a warranty of 1 year for this lens. I had this lens for 2 years when suddenly the autofocus failed. When I called Sony their response was to buy an extended warranty plan next time. Says a lot about their quality and support. I take exceptional care with all my photo gear. Paid $ for a lens I can no longer use. Tamron gives a 6 year warranty on their lens. Recommend getting the Tamron 16-300mm or the 18-270mm lens or Sigma lens instead of Sony. B+H is the best.

Sharp as a macro (almost)

Jun 25, 2008

I bought this as an all purpose walk around lens, but have also been looking for a quality macro lens for my A700. I tried it on a few close ups around the yard, and much to my surprise, the images were excellent. I will no longer be looking for a macro. In my tests, the lens focuses as close as 12 inches, and is very sharp. Color is great, and focus on my A700 is very fast with no searching. Great for portraits, landscapes, and even doubles as a macro lens! Way to go Sony!
