Life is Too Short to Miss a Shot!
The Oben Gimbal Head and Tripod arrived today. A beautiful pairing so easy to put together. My Canon 90D with Tamron 150-600mm or Canon 100-400 lens looks and feels great. I don't have too far to get out and enjoy nature such as the Pelicans Bald Eagles Hawks. I found myself always missing shots. I have always shot hand held with my Canon 100-400 lens rather than on a tripod. (Struggling at times but worth it) When I recently updated to the New T... Show More

Neat little head
Doing a little research before picking up a Platypod, I saw Scott Kelby using one of these on an Ultra... I now have the same setup. It works great, is lightweight, and fits into my admittedly overstuffed ProTactic 450. The largest lens that Ill put on it will be one of my 70-200 2.8s...but theyll generally be close to the ground or other flat-ish surface, with me next to it, but I dont expect it to topple anyway. Theres no friction knob, but ... Show More

Good value, but has some flaws
This Oben model is quite sturdy, and a good value especially if you get it on sale. It does seem to have some odd design flaws, however. The center column clamp does not grip the post securely because the diameter of the post is slightly larger than the top fitting. This allows it to wobble slightly. If you detach the center column and clamp the fitting alone, the problem is solved, but of course you lose that vertical adjustment. The bigger prob... Show More

Perfect on my monopod!
Just got a monopod, and I purchased this Oben BE-117 ballhead for it. It works perfectly! It's knobs work very smoothly. It is rock solid in holding my camera in place. I've used it so far with: Nikon D7000 (with battery grip) and either a 17-55 f/2.8 lens or a Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 lens. This ballhead seems very well machined. Camera does not move when tightening the knob. That was an issue with my previous ballhead, a Vanguard SBH-100. I like the ... Show More

Wonderful Ball head, Pan Knob a little tight in the start
Its a great head, i would only rate a product 5 if it is absolutely out of the world, so don't go by the 4 stars i gave, its a quality head. But it has two minor irritations, the pan knob came tightly screwed , so to loosen it took some effort, but once opened it was good, Hope they don't send it so tightly locked. The second one was the tension screw, i didn't know from the picture that it is of a screw type, i initially thought of buying the Fei... Show More

Five Bubble Levels...Five Stars
Having all these options to make sure everything is level is great and saves me the trouble of straightening in post production. This is especially useful in video since a tilted video would definitely annoy me. I used it for video when I record myself playing guitar or piano. Also, being able to support 11 lbs is useful for supporting a larger DSLR. Something like my small travel aluminum tripod is sketchy when it comes to supporting my 7D Mark ... Show More

Bubble Level not perfectly synchronized
This is my first ball head support for me. I am using it for my monopod. It could hold the weight of my camera with its 28-105mm lens, battery grip and my sb-800 flash. The only issue that I see its that the circle bubble level does not synchronized accurately by a hair with the x and y axis bubble level on its side. I see one of the axis does not match up with the circle bubble level. But I am able use it by the best of me getting close as possi... Show More

Much better than expected
I am still in the honeymoon phase of owning this ball head, but honestly I couldn't be happier. The controls are silky smooth, the ball movement is just as silky. The adjustments aren't touchy, so it's really easy to dial in just the right amount of tension time and time again. The clamp screw is captive so it is impossible to accidentally unscrew it all the way. The only real complaint is the universal plate. It attaches via a hex-head allen wre... Show More

Not happy at all with this ball head.
I wasn't a fan of this ball head from the moment I pulled it out of the box. It has a good solid build but the large locking knob is uncomfortable to turn and is especially rough on your fingers in cold weather. Feels like little razor blades all the way around it. Not like the rubberized knobs I'm used to. When turning the knob, it turns freely for half a turn or so and then gets really difficult to turn. If you can overcome that resistance, it ... Show More

A Practical Low End Tripod
I have been a photographer since 1948, becoming much more serious on and after a long trek towards Mount Everest in 1969. I have used several tripods over the years but having attained the age of 90 I want one that is light weight and simple. I discussed my thoughts with a B&H salesperson on the phone and ultimately he suggested the Oben. I took his suggestion and bought it. I was surprised to find that the legs have four rather than three secti... Show More

Excellent choice
This tripod is simply an excellent choice! I am using it for video shoots and landscape shots. I know that a lot of people talk about weight on products like this, but the difference between 3.7 lbs and 5.2 lbs is pretty negligble to me. What I LOVE about this is it's solid construction and ease of use. When I am setting up for a shot, I want my gear to be sturdy and dependable, and that is exactly what I am getting from this tripod. Even when I ... Show More

very nice head for the price
I got this ball head because I needed something steadier for my tamron 150-600mm which is not exactly a lightweight lens. The results I've got so far are satisfying. all controls are very easy to use and when locked firmly, you get a very steady camera. even with a heavy lens like the tammy. Although you can use it for sports, it's better suited for landscapes, portraits or any other kind of photography that does not involve panning. you can, of ... Show More

I like it
I bought this monopod along with a BE-117 Ball Head by Oben as an experiment. I like shooting both videos and photos of my grandson's sports and a monopod seemed to be a better option than a tripod. I'm using a Canon T5i with a 55-250mm lens. Because of the constant movement of sports, I felt a ball head was also needed.OK it wasn't as easy as I first envisioned, but with a little practice I was shooting right and left, up and down while zooming ... Everything you could possibly want in a ball head!
This is an all around excellent ball head! It is super sturdy and feels well made. The tension adjusters are superb and allow for silky smooth movement even when shooting video. The large knob adjusts the lock of the ball itself and can be perfectly fine-tuned. The plate is solid and has zero play when tightened down. The stud even has a nice D-ring for attaching to a camera without additional tools. There is a bubble level on the top next to the... Show More

Update on Oben tripod issues by Randy
Oben sent a new set of shims to see if it would help with the center column wobble. Unfortunantly it did not. The design for the center column is not capable. I did manage a fix by removing the entire center column and replaced it with a flat base that Kirk had for a similar issue with Gitzo tripods. With an Oben leveling base and my Induro bhl3 ballhead I now have a rock solid system, albiet my ballhead and leveling base are heavy. Without this ... Show More

Good Tripod for the Price
I purchased this for Architectural / Real Estate photography. It is nice and light and raises up to a nice height. I tried using it with the center pole raised but it becomes too shaky for me. I would say this is good for general photography. For architectural use I wish it was more steady. I use wireless tethering to take pictures so there is absolutely no shake caused by me. When I auto-align multiple exposures in Photoshop, they are slightly... Show More

Nice ballhead
It's quite beefy. Well made. I bought it because it was on sale. Everything worked fine except for one thing that bothered me. The lever arm has some slight play in it, maybe 1/16 to 2/16ths of an inch, not much, but it still bothered me. I asked about it on B&H and got 6 or 7 responses. About half told me their's had no play. About half said their's did. Some said it just didn't bother them so they kept it. For me I felt that it could be an issu... Show More

Disapointing!
I bought this ballhead to use with my D610 and Nikon 80-400 telephoto lens. It certainly held the weight of the camera and lens with no problem. I didn't like the fact that the locking knob had a good amount of movement from the loose to tight position. This means that it takes too long once you've got the camera and lens in position, to lock the ball head. Also, and I don't know if it was just a defect on my copy of this ballhead, but the moveme... Excellent Ballhead
Current tripod: Manfrotto 055CXPro3. Heaviest camera/lens combination: Nikon D610 with Kirk L-bracket and Nikon 80-400 (new) with Kirk collar. I bought this ballhead wanting an Arca-Swiss-type clamp/release system but not quite ready for more expensive ventures into this arena. I am very happy with this selection. The instructions are brief but clear. It works with the Kirk accessories. The movements are smooth as can be whether panning or re-pos... Show More

Center post locking is weak link
I still have my Blacks -branded tripod from the 80s and bought this Oben as a gift for my son. Not confident it will provide the same service life as my Blacks and Ive recommended he return it. Solid build, good operation of legs and head operates as advertised; but the center post locking mechanism requires much more tightening than it should to fully secure the post. Otherwise it only takes moderate downward pressure for the whole thing to slo... Show More

Better than Manfrotto equivalent
I bought this to replace a Manfrotto 498RC2 which is elsewhere at the moment, to be used on my Manfrotto 055CXPRO3 carbon fiber legs. The ball is much smoother than on my Manfrotto head, and the knobs tighten without altering the positioning of the ball and the pan. This head feels much better made than the Manfrotto (even though it's less expensive), which is contrary to my impression of the legs, where the Oben felt less sure, less precise and ... Show More

First Impressions
Just got my tripod today and was quick to open so I could see if I had one that had the center post wobble issue or not. I am very happy to say that my center post is stable at all three positions I tried. I then attached my gimbal head (Manfrotto) with my heaviest lens (Tamron 150-600) with my heaviest body (Sony A99 II with extra grip) with the center post at max position and then a few lower positions. The center post worked like a champ in e... Show More

Sweet spot of cost/performance
This one's good. Smooth tension control, QR plate doesn't require an allen wrench, more than enough support for a dslr with 300mm, not too heavy. Larger units in the line look good too, but are probably overkill for general applications, plus added weight and cost. Cheaper units may be ok for small cameras. Better performance ball head exist, but the price will jump significantly from this one. Lower cost units I've tried have disappointed me and... Show More

Failed in Cold conditions
Overall I like the ball head for normal to hot temperatures, but the ball head failed on my during a recent shoot where i experienced morning temperatures of 2-10 degrees F. The panning knob and the locking knob both failed to lock down when tightened as far as i could twist the knobs. This resulted in camera flops and creeping. It also became one more thing for me to have to contend with (gloveless hands to crank down the knobs, uneven footing i... Show More
