Love this lens on my Sony a6000

Apr 18, 2016

I'm 65 years old and felt the desire to go the mirrorless route due to its size and weight. Overall it has been a good decision for me. I enjoy macro photography so when Sony put this lens on sale, I made my purchase. I can hand hold this lens and the image results are amazing. For perfection ultimately close, I would recommend a tripod. Love the ease of going from manual to auto or auto to manual. Images are sharp. I'm very satisfied with my purchase.

tack sharp, slow to focus

Apr 3, 2016

Not a small lens, the 90mm Macro is incredibly sharp corner to corner - no optical problems that I can find - but it can hunt and focus slowly in situations that are other than bright.

Manual focus over-ride is very helpful

Apr 3, 2016

This is a fine lens. I used a Contax 645 for years, in which autofocus has a smooth manual over-ride just by moving the focus ring. An earlier review of this lens complains, Then it auto magnifies, as if this helps anything? This auto-magnification is a CAMERA menu setting: MENU - Cogwheel - 1 - MF Assist - OFF to get rid of the annoying auto-magnification. This feature is useful doing still life with a tripod, not otherwise, and users should tur... Show More

Great lens but focusing is slow

Mar 24, 2016

great for macro work although I find the lens slow to focus and a bit heavy with the Sony A7R II. The lens is very sharp with good contrast and bokeh but the one downside is how slow it is to focus.

SHARP

Mar 9, 2016

If you don't like this lens, it's because you don't know how to use it! It is SUPER sharp and really well made! This is without a doubt the most sharp lens I have ever used. I also have the 85mm Batis, but the 90mm is for sure sharper, allot bigger and obviously not as bright. I use the 90mm for still life and portraits when I need f/2.8 or smaller aperture for portraits. I am planning to keep both, but if you twist my arm and make me choose either one, I'd got for the 90mm Macro.

Multi purpose lens

Feb 23, 2016

If you think this is only a macro lens you are missing out on its full potential. With it being a 2.8 it is good in low light . With its 90 mm it is very good for portraits, Of course it is a great macro lens, but for whatever hoops you put it thru, its sharpness is legendary.

Sharp Macro

Feb 16, 2016

With some decent rain I wanted a Macro for use with my A7rII for the upcoming wildflower season. Lens is well designed and easy to use. Results are satisfying. 1:1 reproduction without using any other adapters or extension tubes. Switch from auto to manual focus with a slight push/pull of the focus ring. Nicely designed.

Worth the extra cost

Jan 15, 2016

This is my first ever macro lens. I nearly choked at the price and dithered (a lot) about this or the Rokinon, which is about half the price and manual focus. I am SO glad I bought this one. I haven't had a lot of time to reply work with it and learn about Macro photography, but the speed at which it focuses and the accuracy--plus the ability to do a manual-assisted focus (not sure the terminology, but the camera focuses, then you fine tune where you want the sweet spot) is very useful. I was surprised at the size...slightly larger (!) than my 18-200 zoom, but that's the 2.8 I guess.

Great lens

Jan 11, 2016

This is a very good lens with excellent image quality. The build quality is first rate. I have used the lens for both macro and non-macro shooting and was happy with the results from both. I especially like the clever focus ring that allows you to change from auto focus to manual without having to go into camera menus. The only down side is that it is a big lens but given the focal length, macro capability and steady shot the size is probably a given.

Great lens but heavy!

Jan 5, 2016

Overall. I'm very satisfied with the lens both at its long and macro ends. But the lens is on the heavy and large size compared to the body of an A7R Mark2.

Wonderful

Jan 2, 2016

I've been using a the Nikon 105mm macro. I'be been moving from Nikon to Sony. I thought for sure that the Sony could not be as good. Boy was I wrong. I absolutely love this lens. You should not be fine focusing this lens when you are really close to your subject. I auto-focus, then fine focus manually. This give perfectly focused images. I carry 2 Sonys and this lens is almost always on one of my cameras.

Lens leaves the camera, but not often.

Dec 29, 2015

Used for macro and landscapes. Will be used for anything else it is suitable for. This lens is fast and accurate focus. Depth of field control is excellent as well. It's not as shallow as a 1.8 or 1.4 lens, but you won't be disappointed. If you own an a7 series or an a6000 buy this lens!

Sharp but has difficulties focusing

Nov 27, 2015

This is a very sharp lens. One of the most sharp native lens for the FE mount. The contract, colors, and IQ is nearly incredible. One downside is the lens feels a bit cheap. Plastic on the outside and the AF/MF toggle ring switch is not very solid. Overall the build quality is good enough but not as strong as a Sony/Zeiss full metal lens. -1 star for the focus. It often has difficulties focusing even during the day. It will hunt and hunt then just give up. Good for portraits and macro which is mostly what I use this for but sports/action shots probably isn't the best fit with this lens.

Major pain

Nov 16, 2015

Used this with a new Sony A7r2 I bought. What a pain to use. So slow to focus. Then it auto magnifies, as if this helps anything? It's just another step in getting the shot. The 100mm Macro other brand I used for years was a bit slow but was a race car compared to this. I'm a people and culture photographer and always had a 100mm Macro as my go to lens on my camera. Just try to shoot anything moving and it's a major pain to get the shot. Maybe it... Show More

A beast of the macro world...

Oct 7, 2015

I didn't have any prior experience with a macro lens and still learning. But I love how sharp the photos come out. I have been mainly using the lens for portrait but am learning the real benefits of it in close proximity shooting. The build quality is impeccable. A bit heavy but it actually helps reduce shakes when shooting macro. The E-mount system could use more lenses like this in other classes...

I love this lens and have an A7R2. Cons: large and heavy Has OSS - could be lighter for the A7R2 if it didn't and one could use the in-camera stabilization instead. of course would be nice to be a faster lens but then would be even larger and more expensive. somewhat expensive Pros: Sharp for macro Sharp for portraits Great focal length for portraits did I mention sharp?

Sharpest Lens in My Bag and Beautifully Built

Aug 27, 2015

After only a day, it may be premature to review this lens right now, but my enthusiasm is really high. Having skipped purchasing all of the thousand dollar, plus, Sony lenses up to this point (mostly CZ's), I was so taken by the reviews, particularly DXoMark's rating this higher than the FE 55 f/1.8 in their testing I felt that I needed to see what all the buzz was about. Well, for me, this sets a whole new standard for sharpness, contrast, color... Show More

great for macro and everything else!

Aug 19, 2015

I have had this lens for a week now and it amazes me everyday. I have used it for everything from a band performance to head shots and of course macro. Sharp at every aperture and color is very accurate. It does not enjoy focusing in extreme low light but when it does it is accurate. Read from others that it feels a little heavy but I am using it on an A6000 and no complaints.

Amazing

Aug 11, 2015

I do most of my shooting with A7 and 35mm 2.8 - a very compact combo. The size of this lens doubles the bulk and weight of that. However, sometimes I need to get close to the subject or get a flattened perspective with creamy background, so 90mm is very useful. I fell in love with this lens after the first test shot: not only is it impeccably sharp all across the frame, but the color rendition is amazingly detailed and rich. Plus, the ergonomics ... Incredible Image Quality!

Aug 11, 2015

For my a7 II body I now have 2 GS and 2 Zs (70-200 G, this 90mm macro, the 16-35 Zeiss & the 55mm f/1-8 Zeiss). I do truly believe that this lens is sharper than any of the other 3 by a long shot. It's awesome. With the type shooting I love, I can see this guy living on the a7 II most of the time. It's tack sharp from its shortest focal distance to infinity, even wide open! A must have if you find yourself not being able to move in as close as you need to often. Also an incredible portrait lens too.
