Compact Camera that can do EVERYTHING

Nov 18, 2015

I upgraded from the RX100 M1 to this RX100 M4, and I do not own a DSLR. I use Lightroom 6 for raw stills, After Effects for time-lapse, and Final Cut Pro X for video. I have a baby, travel frequently, and aspire to one day upload something to Vimeo at the run & gun caliber of Watchtower of Turkey, Loving Lanka, or anything Brandon Li. That is the basis for my review. For the simple fact that this camera can do EVERYTHING I want it to do in my poc... Show More

From panasonic to sony

Jul 16, 2015

I've been a panasonic compact camera user for the past 10+ years and was looking to upgrade from my latest LX7. I had two choices and that was LX100 and the RX100M3 (I waited for the release of M4 for the upgraded video capabilities). The major reason I chose the RX100M4 over the LX100 is the built-in flash. Buying a compact camera is for... well... connivence and pocketability and the LX100 required you to attach an external flash (included) to ... Show More

Amazing Camera for the best vacation photographs

Sep 4, 2016

I have been taking family photographs for 30 years and have a cupboard full of camera's and video recorders that I no longer use - maybe they will be museum pieces one day. I purchased the RX 100 IV because I wanted the best quality small camera that I could carry everywhere in a small bag on my family holiday trip to Japan. I guess the camera is expensive, that is the price you pay for the best photographs. It is so good, most shots are perfect ... Show More

best compact camera ever owned

Oct 7, 2015

This camera offers a suprisingly satisfying shooting experience. I've owned other really good compacts but this little wonder is faster, has more accurate focus(whcih is also fast), is optically superior and yes, more expensive! 1k for a pocket camera seems absurd at first but after shooting with this camera for a couple of weeks and working with the files, i'm impressed. One thing that really surprised me is that i LOVE the electronic view finde... Show More

A Great Camera Line Has Become Even Better!

Jan 2, 2017

Before purchasing the Sony RX100 IV I was using the RX100 III. I gave it to a family member so they could take high quality photos of their kids. The RX100 cameras take excellent photos in auto mode, so I thought they would enjoy it. What I liked was using the RX100 in the A, M modes and pushing the limits using some unique features like Sony Clear View Zoom (some degradation, but not like digital zoom), and their well implemented DRO/HDR feature... Pocketable workhorse

Nov 23, 2015

I got this primarily for a research project that needs 960FPS video (which is a tad awkward to use, but of quite high quality). The RX100IV has the most advanced sensor tech in a consumer camera, and the high-speed video isn't the only benefit. I have a variety of Sonys, including a NEX-7 and an A7II, and the RX100IV's more advanced (but smaller) sensor doesn't beat them for stills, but it isn't as far behind as one might expect. Dynamic range is... Show More

Camera makes it hard to take a bad photo

Jun 8, 2016

I bought this camera because my vacations are pretty active, and carrying my SLR & accessories was getting tiresome. Pros Fantastic lens. A longer tele is always desired, but the what can you do? Contrast and sharpness are pretty remarkable. Nice color rendition, I prefer the Sony algorithm to my Canon's, which is more natural, but less striking. Many programmable options. Cons You really need to buy a separate book to explain all the choices and... Show More

Simply Your Best Option For Pocketable Performance

Sep 2, 2015

I have previously owned (and loved) the Sony RX100M2 and RX100M3, but made the decision to upgrade primarily for the promise of faster autofocus to get great photos of my fast-moving toddler. This camera does not disappoint. The autofocus is CONSIDERABLY faster, and is now at the point where you don't miss shots while waiting for focus lock. The camera is also more responsive overall. Faster zoom, lower shutter lag, and an immediacy that allows y... Show More

Slow motion, what slow motion. It took me a week to get it to work after I made the correct HDR menu selections. I followed the instructions and kept getting error message When the center button is pressed it enters the standby mode then you press record... Great Camera But Over Priced

Oct 13, 2015

I contemplated a lot before finally falling in to purchasing this camera. It is a nice camera and image quality is very good specially the Zeiss lens wide open produces nice images and that was the main reason I switched from Canon G7X to Sony RX100 IV. All the other options that come with Sony like 4K and slow motion video are good for you to play around and have fun (you need a SDxc, 600x), they don't really have any practical usage. In the box... Great little camera

I'm not much of a point and shoot guy, but I am heading off on a hiking trip to Ireland, and I want something small and very, very good to have with me on the trail. This will do fine, thank you. This is, as everyone will tell you, a great little camera, and you can read technical reviews by the dozens, so here's some personal stuff.Image quality is great, AF is very good. There are lots of AF options, so take some time to figure them out. The po... Show More

So far so good

Jul 5, 2015

I've had the m2 for several years as a take along cam to supplement a Panasonic GH4. I've been anxiously awaiting the new Sony with 4K to match my GH4 movies. The new Sony is a pleasure to use. Slog2 needs practice to expose correctly, I haven't tried playing around with coloring yet. Cine 1 allows native ISO use and captures a flat image with preserved highlights so this may work nicely for correction. 4k capture is crystal clear, details is cle... Show More

Bad image quality on 70mm

Oct 20, 2015

I needed a travel camera for biking as I was tired of carrying my DSLR in my backpack. On paper and based on the favorable reviews the RX100IV looked good for my needs as it's small, it has electronic viewfinder, tilting screen and loads of video features including the slow-mo. When I got it I wasn't happy with the picture quality it took me a while figuring out what's wrong with the camera. The quality of pictures were mixed (from very sharp to ... Show More

I also fell on it and had to have it repaired (local guy did a great job). This is my third one, and I am glad to have the latest model. First I have to say this camera produces beautiful images and excellent video. I already own Sony's A7RII and A7SII and to be able to carry this camera with me everywhere I go and use it to get video that is on par with my other cameras is just totally awesome! The only reason for 4 stars is that I wish it had an input for a microphone, Keep in mind that the mic on this camera is actually really good but I would still the ability to plug in an ex... Flash unit did not work

I think I will like this camera, although it takes some getting used to if your other cameras are large DSLRs. The flash unit would not pop up and I am return the camera for repair or replacement. I did make quite a few pictures and was very pleased with the quality of the images. I had owned the first edition of the RX100 and the 4th generation is certainly an advancement, especially the viewfinder addition. The 5 minute limit and overheating is... Show More

It fits in s jeans front pocket. The quality is about the same as the Nikon D3200 with the Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II Lens. Not great but adequate when the alternative is no camera at all. Low light performance is not good at all, pictures taken ISO 1600 and higher are below a level of quality than I can accept. I'd give it 5 starts excecpt for one notable item that I didn't realize until after purchase -- there is No Audio input on the camera. Otherwise it's a fantastic little camera for both Stills and Video. I haven't post-processed the images but based on my experienc with Sony the results should be stellar. A lot of camera in your pocket

Sep 1, 2015

Ok here's a news flash, it's a great camera and takes great pictures. Yet, I have struggled with this camera. Nikon and Panasonic have better menu structures and shooting logic. Capture One has also been an adjustment. I'm probably alone here but I like Slikypix better for converting raw files. Admittedly most of my frustration comes for being more familiar with other manufactures but there does seem to be some holes in the Sony operation logic. ... Show More

Love this camera!

Oct 3, 2015

I just got back from a hiking trip on the Tour du Mont Blanc and decided to buy this camera as an upgrade from the RX100 first edition which I've had. When I'm hiking, I tend to have my Pentax K3 with some sort of telephoto lens and depending on the pace/weather/etc, it's nice to have a smaller camera for panoramic shots. This camera is a huge upgrade from the first edition- much crisper images and the colors does a much better job with color rep... Show More

Amazing Machine

May 20, 2019

I have used this model DSC-RX100 IV to shoot a staggering number of movies. Naturally I have been running the audio separately and syncing it (just like film) for post production. For the experienced movie maker (especially one who started with actual film) this machine is incredible. It is tiny, fits in my pocket, and never intimidates people. I went from a Lumix LX-5 to this Sony. The difference is not night and day, but the photos are markedly sharper and the auto WB more intelligent (with LR correction) than the LX-5. with the addition of a grip, this is an excellent size, and it fits well in a LowePro Napoli 30 case. I had also considered the Lumix LX-100, and fell in love with the controls (so intuitive for someone who grew up with a Nikon FM-2!) but it was just a little too large... Show More
