Seagate 5TB Backup Plus Portable Hard Drive (Black)

MPN's:
Great as always, but...
I always trust Seagate as my backup drive, and until now there's no plan to change my mind, the physical size is small enough, yet the capacity is super big. however, there's one thing a little bit bother me, and please cmiiw, it says 5 TB, but when I plug it in, even I haven't put any data in it, it's already 200gb less, maybe from the software or anything else that I don't understand, but 200 gb?? that's big enough for me for something that I don't need.

Maxi capacity, mini size
Absolutely terrific! Tons of storage in a smaller than smart phone format that I can fit in my pocket. Wouldn't be without it now.

Great product
I definitely recommend this product from B&H. Great, reliable company that doesn't charge sales tax in Illinois, definitely recommend.

Great Little Big Hard Drive.
The Physical size is small and the capacity size is supper. I removed all the software that came with the drive and just use it as a external hard drive. Great product Great price.

Great Product
I've purchased several portable hard drives over the years and this one it the best. for the operating system I have (windows 10) I didn't have to download any software to use it. (in the past other products I've purchased I did and even when you remove the HD properly it's still looking for it - because of the software) I just drag and drop the items I wanted to add and it worked beautifully. really large files and photos copied over rather q... 135MB/s read/write on 5TB
Just received the 5TB model & tested with Blackmagic Disk Speed at about 135MB/sec reads & writes on a MacBook Pro 2011 with a USB3 Thunderbolt adapter. According to the internet the 5TB model has a Barracuda drive inside. Not stoked on how flimsy the thin USB3 connectors are but cant complain about such a great deal!

great and easy to use
I've had a few portable backup hard drives and this one is by far the best and easiest to use. to copy over you just drag and drop. easy it doesn't load any unwanted software to your machine and doesn't constantly try to "find" the portable hard drive once you remove it from your PC. this is by far the best I've ever owned

Slowish but effective
This is currently the largest bus-powered portable single-disk drive (non-RAID) that I could find. And for that reason its a killer accessory for large libraries of music, video, photos, anything. I don't get the fastest transfer rates with it but that's not the point.

Works as advertised.
For users of both Macs and PCs who want to have one backup for both or for transferring between the two, this is an easy solution. It's also a lot of storage for the price

Download Seagate Software to use on Mac.
So far works great BUT.... It drove me crazy for hours trying to format the disc on my mac. Worked great on windows but it was impossible for me to format it on mac. I did not find any answers on youtube and decided to look on the Seagate website. There you MUST download the Paragon software for MAC, this enables you to read and write on a NTFS drive. That means you have to format the drive on Windows or use the default format and use it like that on Mac.

Love love love my Seagate
I am so over cloud backup. When Comcast gives you 2MB upload speed that makes uploading 1T a week long project you know paying for cloud storage is fools game. Within house backup it is mearly minutes till whole portfolios are copied. When it comes to managing time to use technology to limit time use instead of gobbling it up makes Seagates 5T Portable Hard Drive a winner, hands down. I used Maxtor before Seagate took over and this little box hel... Show More

Just what I needed
Shooting with a D800E and now also a D850, I quickly ran out of a 3TB drive. This 5TB is the next step up and just what I needed. It is much smaller than the last generation of drives and is relatively fast. I have preferred Seagate drives over the years.

excellent product
this is a quality product but you have to be very careful not to drop it and keep it in a case when you are not using it and also have a second hard drive to backup your backup files - you're welcome

primary storage for photos
I have a number of Seagate Backup Plus units. These are my primary storage for RAW files for Lightroom imports and exports. I have been very happy with the Seagate brand and have never had one fail (knock on wood). They are fast enough for my needs.

Fast and compact.
Fast USB 3.0 connection. Beautiful color and finish (If that's important to you). I use it to back up and store photos and files mainly. It works as expected. Let's see how long it lasts.

Not Mac Compatible
I have no clue what this company did in regards to changing the product, but it certainly isn't Mac compatible anymore. I have had the hardest time and this product has royally messed me up - do not buy if you have a mac, you will regret it.

5TerabItes of USB Powered, Portable Storage
I have a number of WD Passport Ultra storage units up to 3TB, but this 5TB storage device caught my attention. Fast transfer rates to a compact, easily transportable unit barely bigger than a whiskey flask. Not to mention a stunning, ulta-blue cover. Taking it for a month of international travel and will be counting on it to bring all my data home safely. Also bought a RG case for this unit.

Works For Me
I needed an external drive to back up my digitized VHS videos (120 hours). This does the trick. It works with both Windows 10 and Mac OS without reformatting when you use the Paragon driver that comes with the drive or that you can download from Seagate's support website for free. Using Blackmagic Disk Speed Test I get about 135 - 140 Mb/s transfer rate on my new iMac 27. Good enough for my use.

Excellent
It came real fast. The price was great for a 5tb portable hard drive. I have not had the chance to use it yet but I have had other Seagate portable hard drives and never had a problem.

Misleading description in "system requirements"
System Requirements indicates it is for Mac OS X 10.7 or higher, or Windows 7 or higher operating system. Not so. It is recognized as an external drive but the backup software is not for Mac platform. The only option is iCloud backup or Time Machine. I would not have purchased it if I knew what I'd consider as "not Mac compatible".
