Perfect small 16-35mm with excellent sharpness

May 29, 2017

I have already used this lens on 3 real estate shoots with excellent results. The images are sharp and the perspective is perfect. I needed this lens now to get me through and will hang on to it. I have ordered the Sony 16-35mm F2.8 GMaster, but as it isn't available for a few months, I needed a lens now for work. I will use it on 20+ jobs before the faster glass arrives, so the cost will be covered and also be a good backup for those times when needing to travel light.

Really Pleased

May 27, 2018

I have read a number of comments on this lens that it is one to stay away from. Well, I simply could not be more pleased with mine. If I really blow up a photo, there may be some softening in one corner, but I really had to look for it. Otherwise, this lens is as sharp as a tack with great color and contrast rendition. I'm not only pleased, I'm impressed. I accept it is f/4, and it is heavy (can't fight the laws of physics) but it is doing all I wanted from it

Good Super-Wide for a7/a7R

Dec 2, 2014

Good super-wide angle lens for the a7/a7R cameras. Comparable to the Canon 16-35mm f/4L which I used until I bought this native lens. Used as a landscape lens, where I stop down to f/8 or f/11, this lens is sharp corner-to-corner, edge-to-edge. The only cons are that this lens is pricey, is an f/4 aperture lens rather than f/1.4-f/2.8, and doesn't have the build quality of the Zeiss ZM, ZE, ZF.2 lenses. Overall, a good lens, matched well to the Sony a7/a7R.

A decent lens

Mar 10, 2019

I got this for real estate photographer and the need for wide-angle. Appears to be a pretty sharp lens with good color, and Im not bothered by it being an f/4 as opposed to f/2.8 because, for any application I would use it (real estate, landscape, etc.), Ill always be shooting at f/6.3 - f/8 (therefore, saving money and weight/bulk). I havent had it long, but Im happy with the purchase. However, I do think this lens is over-priced (by Sony, not B&H).

The missing piece!

Dec 2, 2014

I ended up at in the Sony A7R camp coming from Canon. Simply put, this lens is every bit as good as my best Canon zoom, the EF 24-70 ll f/2.8 at 24, 28 & 35mm. At 16mm the Zeiss is even better, quite an achievement. Comparing the Zeiss to my old Canon 16-35, well there is no companion. Nice job Sony! The FE 4/16-35 is extremely well corrected for point sources at f/4, in other words, at f/4 it looks beautiful for night skies.

Sharp and reliable

Dec 29, 2016

I have just moved to mirrorless from Nikon. Still getting used to a completely new way to interact with a camera system and lenses. Overall this lens is super sharp. It does better when the subject is near the center on portraits. Landscapes look amazing when there is good light. In low light my images lacked sharpness but I am still getting used to my camera and was handholding it. It is most likely my bad there.

Fantastic lens for the A7r

Feb 11, 2016

I purchased this lens for my Sony A7r and find it to be super sharp at 16 thru 35. I had read complaints that it was not sharp at the 28-35 range, but since I do landscapes and usually at f8 to f16 I find it to be Equally sharp all thru the range. Its a little heavy, but the build quality is excellent. I tried the Sony 35 f2.8, the Loxia 35, and the voightlander 15, and sent them all back and got the Sony 16-35.

I would highly recommend this lens...

Dec 17, 2016

The lens will be used primarily for landscape photography mounted on a tripod, with occasional hand-held use which is great with the Optical SteadyShot feature. Didn't need an f2.8 lens and find this lens, with a constant f/4 to produce excellent images throughout the f-stop range. The clarity is absolutely perfect and the weight/size is really nice to work with. All-in-all what I expect from from a ZEISS lens.

Vario-Tessar T* FE 16-35mm f/4 ZA OSS Lens by Sony

Mar 22, 2016

I hesitated to purchase this lens for months because of the cost, but now that I have finally bit the bullet, I feel no buyer remorse. The colors this lens produces are just awesome because of the Zeiss coatings applied, and the focus ring works silky smooth to help obtain precise focus in manual mode. Sony has hit a home run with this lens, and do not think twice about purchasing it if you can afford it.

expensive, but super sharp images

Aug 23, 2019

Only been shooting about a week and a half with this but she seems super fast, very sharp, heavy, but amazing quality on this lens. I'm a recent convert from Nikon and swore by my Tamron 10 to 24mm on that end, which was fantastic. Was shocked to spend what I did on this, but it does deliver. Would prefer just a few more mm on the lower end, but it's wide, no issues with any edges, and works as promised.

Love this lens - was exactly what I needed

Nov 10, 2016

I am fairly new to photography and needed a wide angle lens for my Sony A7. I wanted one that was really intuitive and easy to use. B&H was awesome at showing me my options. Ultimately I decided an attachment would be too cumbersome and went with the matching sony 16-35mm lens. The pictures I've been taking are beautiful and the 16mm view is not fish eye - so I am able to use the full range for my needs!

Finally Sony a7 series is a System!

May 26, 2015

I bought this lens to complete my A7 system. This glass is a top notch. The 3D effect of the picture is very Zeiss and therefore this lens deserves a Zeiss band. Built in all metal parts except for the lens hood, The size is almost the same as 24-70. Yes this lens is expensive compare to its competitor but the prize compensate to its well construction and amazing picture. A must lens for a7 series.

Sharp lens

Jul 30, 2016

I use this lens with my Sony A7sII mostly with film. The lens is sharp and 4K video quality looks good. I didn't the money to get a cine lens but this is the next best thing. The continuos auto focus is quick and on point. You just have to be careful when filming from 16-20mm with a filter on the corners can get dark on you. The body is metal and the focus ring is a high grade plastic.

Lovely lens, very sharp

Dec 4, 2014

See images online of how large this lens is compared to the A7 body for reference. It's like attaching a Canon 24-70 f2.8 to a 7D - it really makes it almost overweighted by the lens. I enjoy the size and works great for street photography as well as video. Bummer it's not 2.8, but f4 works well and haven't had any sortable issues. It's surprisingly sharp and built very well.

Nice addition

Nov 30, 2014

This lens performed well and is optically very decent. It is a bit bulkier compared to the FE 24-70mm. The lens pushes out for wide and retracts for tele, opposite to the 24-70mm. Compared with EF 17-40mm L, the FE 16-35mm is better, specially on the wider end. I would say that the EF 16-35mm L F4 IS has a slight edge in terms of optical quality, but only slight.

Long Awaited. Solid performance.

Dec 2, 2014

It is well built, but I wish the lens did not move as it is zoomed in and out. I do wonder how well it will keep moisture and dust out due to that. It's a sharp lens, though it is not as sharp as the 14-24mm lens (but, what is?). That being said, it has a better range, and can accept standard filters. The bokeh is better than the 14-24mm 2.8g, IMO.

My favorite lens

May 8, 2017

I am using this lens on my A7RM2 and I love it. I've always loved Zeiss lens for their ability to add life to an image. This lens adds that plus image sharpness that seems to vival primes - I don't say that about many lens. I also shot the 90mm F2.8 Macro which is my gold standard for sharpness and they are pretty close. LOVE this lens

A nice wide-angle lens

May 13, 2017

I purchased this lens with the intention to capture cityscapes and architectural photos. Overall, I am satisfied with the results of the lens. I was able to capture wide angle photos from short distances and in tight spaces. However, I noticed a considerable amount of vignette in corners and a slight fish-eye distortion at 16 mm.

Wide Open

Sep 2, 2015

Not normally a wide angle shooter but decided to take this lens out for a drive. Extremely sharp for my standards but found slight abberation on the edges at 20mm. Clean and sharp and very wide for street shooters. I normally range between 50mm and 135mm but found this lens useful and very tight situations when shooting indoors.

Dec 1, 2014

Very sharp like the other native Zeiss glass Sony has announced for their full frame Alpha series. At 16mm I did find a touch of vignetting at the corners but nothing out of the ordinary for a lens that wide. Super performance for the price and a must to round out the glass for your A7x body.

Good Wide Angle Zoom

Apr 3, 2017

Overall a really solid lens. Build quality is fantastic. Focus and zoom are very smooth but have a nice tolerance. Lens feels solid and hefty but not too heavy. Auto-focus is fairly fast. Distortion is more pronounced at 16mm but most can be corrected easily in lightroom.

Great Wide Zoom

Apr 2, 2019

Picked this up to cover wide zoom ranges. Highly considered the 18mm and 24mm primes, but we are so happy that we chose the 16-35mm. Plenty Sharp for our needs and a great lens covering wide angle for us, while allowing us to bring it in tighter with a snap of the wrist.
