Like "WHOA!!!"

Jan 23, 2018

Recently purchased this lens via a B&H used deal. It was rated as a "10" but I was a little concerned. Super fast shipping. To my suprise, this thing looked un-used and brand new :) I got the opportunity to use the lens on my A7RIII... all I can say is "wow" i'm very impressed. i'm a part time photographer. I do mostly event photography on the side, this lens is going to take my work to the next level. Great quality pictures... super sharp... fas... Show More

Tack sharp focus, smooth zoom, and programmable electronics

Oct 31, 2017

I gladly swapped out my Canon gear for the new A9 body by Sony but glass made me nervous. I was used to tack-sharp performance from my 70-210 and wasn't sure if the offering from Sony would compare. It does and is a joy to use. Sharp as a pin, lighter and overall a hair smaller than its Canon counterpart, this lens zooms a bit smoother, and retains its corner to corner sharpness. I love the programmable button that lets me activate focus lock or ... Show More

Great Lens

Apr 6, 2017

I bought this lens for A7 before my last trip. With F2.8, I was able to take great pictures of birds and views in the middle range, especially when the light was relatively dim. That is exactly what I am looking for. At the same time, this lens provides a great sharpness to the pictures. The drawbacks are the size and weight. It is not a to-go lens. Also, 70-200mm means that this lens might not be as convenient as a 24-70 or 28-70 in a close quarter shooting (i.e. shooting in a hiking trail or on a street). It is relatively expensive as an Alpha lens. But it worths it.

Better than my Canon 70-200 F2.8 USM II in every way.

May 28, 2017

I have been slowly switching over from Canon to Sony for 4 years and now I am completely Sony. The A9 was the final piece to replace my 1Dx. Once I had access to a full frame mirrorless that will give me the frame rate necessary for Wildlife and Sports, I could also move on to native lenses for the Sony FE system. My Sony FE 70-200 focuses faster than any lens I have owned, it's tack sharp and feels really good to use. I am holding on to my Canon 600mm F4 II and using it with the metabones adapter until Sony offers their own super long glass.

Beat my expectations no doubt

Aug 17, 2018

I bought this lens primarily for sports photography but will be using for a little of everything. The sharpness is as sharp, if not sharper my sharpest prime, the sigma 16mm f2. The color is better than any of my lenses as well. If you're looking at this lens I dont need to expand on the AF.. but its FAST. And it doesnt lose my subject. The weight is a bit much but I personally dont mind. It feels durable as can be and seems well balanced as well. The layout works so well too, it fits comfortably in my hand. Worth the money.

Fantastic (but expensive) lens for the A7 bodies

Aug 30, 2016

I have an A7RII and this lens is a wonderful addition to the system. Autofocus is snappy and the zoom ring is smooth. The only downsides of the lens are that it's rather large/heavy and expensive. Still I'm glad I bought it and it allows me to get good photos in less than ideal situations that I couldn't have before. I've already gotten many great photos with it of my children and their teams playing outdoor sports. While I've mostly used it outdoors thus far, I look forward to using it in gymnasiums over the winter months.

A Great Lens thats Unusually Heavy

May 16, 2018

This is a fantastic lens for portraiture, Wildlife, sports and even landscape in some instances. My tests have shown it to be sharp as a tack, and the sharpest Sony telephoto I own. I dont however possess Nikon or Canon 70-200mm, and havent yet tested it with the available Sony teleconverters. PROS: Sharp, bright, doesnt extend when zooming and maintains f2.8 minimum throughout its zoom range. Prodigious everythinglens. CONS: Heavy! If youre taking this to a game or on a wildlife shoot, bring your tripod or monopod.

Best 70-200 around

Sep 3, 2016

I am one of the lucky people who received this lens. Everything people say about this lens is absolutely 100% correct. I got the lens from a local California dealer(B&H has a large list of pre orders, my name was way down the list) in Mission Viejo with the help from the Sony reps(Thank you Rob and Marcus). I moved from Nikon to Sony last year, and I have to say the Sony Gmaster lens is superior to the Nikon 70-200 v2(and I loved that lens) in sharpness, and Bokeh. Great job Sony.#Sony #Gmaster #OCcamera

I actually love this lens. so why only 4 stars?

Sep 8, 2019

Because it makes me cry myself to sleep at night. originally had the f4, and loved shooting with it. prior to shooting with the 70-200 i hadnt yet decided what my preferred focal length was. even with the f4 i loved the 70-200 range and compression. so why didnt i just keep the f4 and buy another lense with the money i would have saved (like the sigma 14-24 thats coming out soon...)? im not a smart man... actually... ill give the lens 5 stars... i give the lenses owner 2 stars.

AF problems above F4.0

Mar 20, 2017

Very sharp, feels very strong. The AF is very fast if you are working between 2.8 and 4.0, above that the AF starts to search and search and you finally gets a lot of unfocused pictures. This is attached to a A7RII. The same is happening with all the GM lenses that I have. I search and I found that that is happening with a lot of studio photographer trying to work with the sony system . I am waiting that sony release a firmware for the camera or the lenses to fix that.

Terrific Fast Zoom

Jan 2, 2019

The 70-200 GM is one big (and heavy lens). That being said, in comparison with other GM lenses, not so much. The images are really sharp and the focus capture and tracking is very smooth. This is actually a complicated lens and is probably the only one that I have actually read the directions to understand what the body controls are for. This is an expensive lens and not for penny pinchers, but the quality of the pictures is really worth the price.

You will NOT be disappointed

Dec 31, 2018

After using my canon 100 to 400 mm with sigma mc11 adapter Sony a 73 the focus simply wasnt fast enough, thought Id give the Sony 70 to 200 2.8 a try and am thoroughly satisfied with its performance. When using with my Sony alpha 73 camera with that particular canon lens it would hunt and breathe a lot but using Sony glass on a Sony camera is indescribable. Sony if youre listening would to have A 100 to 400 mm 2.8 from you as well

Well worth the price.

Have owned a few 70-200mm and equivalent lenses also including the Sony 70-200mm f/4. All great lenses, but this one is better than the ones I have owned. -Quick to focus. -Accurate focus. -Very, very sharp. -Out of focus areas are very pleasing to my eyes. -Great colors. -Well built. -Great ergonomics. Hesitated for a long while due to price, but now that I have it I do not regret the spend at all. My favorite lens.

Sharpest, fastest focusing lov

Converting from Nikon full frame to Sony. Been into photography since the early 90s. Converted multiple film platforms, multiple digital, cropped to full frame on and on. A Sony A7III with this 70-200 f/2.8 with or without teleconverter is beyond compare to anything before. Weve all become accustomed to having a few photos in the bunch out of focus. That does not happen on the Sony Alpha platform. Game Changer!

Didn't Disappoint

Sep 28, 2019

Traded in my old Canon gear for Sony A7iii but kept the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8, using Metabones adapter. When turning on/off, the adapter mode sometimes switched causing delay. So, traded that in for a Sony f/2.8 GM. Read reviews about how the Canon was far better. So, had doubts about the Sony GM. However, when I switched, was not disappointed. Very satisfied with the sharpness and ability to bokeh wide open.

Great, but heavy lens

Jul 24, 2017

I've only recently shifted over to Sony and have only shot 1 event with the lens. That being said, it's a fantastic lens. It's probably mental, but the pictures seem sharper than with my old D800 + Nikkor 70-200 VR II. Only complaint is that it's a really heavy lens and ergonomically it's not great even with the battery grip on the a9. Fatigue definitely kicked in during the later half of the day.

In Love

Oct 2, 2017

I am in love with this lens! I actually use it more than I thought I would. I keep a 24/70 GM and the awesome 85 GM in my kit. The 85 GM stayed in my case at my last portrait shoot. That's impressive. This is in no way a replacement for the Sony 85 GM. However, if I were starting over, the 70/200 GM would have been purchased before the 85 GM. All three GM lenses I have are irreplaceable.

Another excellent product from Sony.

The Sony 70-200mm GM f/2.8 fills so many needs in our photography. The lens is somewhat heavy but being for a full frame camera and with f/2.8 is expected. From time to time we photograph inside churches and this is the perfect lens for that. We use this on the Sony A7RIII. The images produced by this lens are astounding! As a side note: Thanks B&H for the ongoing excellent service!!

This lens will be exactly what you expect it to be. It's solid, practical to use, fast and high quality. I love the detail of the hood that lets you use Circular Polarizing Filters. It's excellent for weddings and sports. Because of its weight and size, not recommended for travelers. But that's obvious. Well done Sony again. Officially I don't regret switching to this brand :)

Great new glass

Dec 20, 2017

Moving over to a complete Sony system I was nervous about giving up my Canon 70-200 f2.8 lens. I should not have worried, the new Sony 70-200 f2.8 glass is easily as good as the old Canon and gives w=me amazing auto focus with the A7R2 and A9. Downsides? Well, the lens is a little heavy and so is the price. But when you're making your living with a camera you need the best.

My Favorite lens

Jul 24, 2018

I absolutely love this focal range and very much missed having it when I made the switch from canon. I had to just bite the bullet and buy it. I can tell you I'm not disappointed with my choice! I have this lens along with the 24-70 GM it matches up perfectly. I hate to say it but if one puts their camera (in my case A7riii) into auto mode you will get "pro" quality images.

Even better than expected!

Apr 30, 2018

Just used the Sony 70-200 Gmaster with the Sony A7RIII at a school play and the images are spectacular! Focusing worked fine even when things got darker. Yes, the lens is heavy but not a problem for me even though I am 73 years of age. This lens equals and maybe betters different prime lens I have had over the years. Hoping the lens remains trouble free for a long time.

Traded my Nikon gear for sony gear about a year ago with some trepidation due to the lack of glass. With the new G Master trinity out now, I have not regretted the decision. Love this lens. Sturdy--fell on concrete from 2 feet and somehow no obvious flaws. Bokeh is nice and soft. Fast autofocus. Hunts somewhat when close to subject. Equal to my Nikkor 70-200/2.8
