a9ii for bird photography real word review

Mar 17, 2020

I am an experienced bird/wildlife photographer. Here's my feedback after using my a9ii and 600mm F4 lens for a few months. Things I love: * Light weight - only 8.5 pounds when paired with the 600mm f4 GM lense. * No blackout continuous shooting - love it. * Best AF tracking on the market - once AF locks on the subject, it stays. * Flip-out screen - great for low angle shooting. Some DSLR bodies also have flip-out screen but their live-... Show More

One of the very best

Mar 25, 2020

I have shot Nikon, Olympus, Canon, and Sony since the film days. In the early 2000s I converted to Canon digital and glass and have always loved it. 4 years ago I explored the Sony A7R series and was amazed by the performance but a little frustrated at the trade off of resolution and low light function. The Sony A9ii has broken all of the barriers and is a true full-function professional camera with features that Nikon and Canon are only beginnin... Show More

The fastest focusing camera I've ever held

Nov 10, 2019

I've spent the last few years with an a99ii which has very good autofocus capabilities, but this camera is incredible. I was somewhat concerned with the ergonomics as the a99ii was very strong in this respect, but the slightly larger size, new grip and improved buttons have made the transition easy. I've also been impressed with just how much this camera can be customized to work just like I want it to. The Sony menus have never been any issue (I... Show More

Fast and Furious

Mar 20, 2020

While new to the Sony full-frame mirrorless cameras, I can safely say that this camera is in a category of itself. I use the camera for its intended purpose, that is fast action, with subjects moving sometimes in unpredictable direction. The AF tracking is nothing short of mind-blowing - it almost never loses the subject. The same applies to eye and face-detect AF, although I find it much more reliable for humans than it is for animals. I love ... Show More

Great Camera Above All The Rest

Dec 24, 2019

This camera far exceeds any professional low light camera out there. I shoot gymnastics events! Probably the worst scenario set up to be in when taking photos. Low lights, fluorescent lighting and fast action. I own the Canon EOS 1D Mark II, A9 I and A9II. I have all the Pro lenses - including (70-200, 2.8). This camera is a beast - Spot on Focusing. The eye focus can not be beat. This camera is fast, accurate and quiet. The new anti flickering ... Show More

Is it better than the a9?

Jan 8, 2020

The short answer is yes... Autofocus is better (the a9 is remarkable and hard to imagine it can be noticeably bested). The biggest difference is really in the shutter lag (more responsive from the time you press the shutter to the initiation of photos so you almost never miss a shot). Also, the wifi transfer is massively better (like 5 times faster than any other Sony camera). White balance and exposure is much, much better as well (much more nat... Show More

A9ii is A Very Happy

Nov 14, 2019

3rd Alpha body. A7iii, A7Riii and now A9ii. Sold A7iii because its also 24mp. After being a photographer with a lot of pro gear (mostly Nikon) since 1990, this A9ii is without a doubt the best camera Ive ever had. The autofocus system produces much better photos than A7iii with the same resolution even for portraits, much less moving subjects. The feel, grip, buttons are awesome. Autofocus, metering and other options make it a standout. Keeper. Very good camera. Probably the best currently available. Not just for journalism.

Even Better Than Expected

Dec 2, 2019

I have a Sony A7RIV, which I love. I sold my A7Riii for the new A9ii. I do both studio and documentary photography. The A7RIV was missing critical focus about 10% of the time during press events. That may not sound critical, but it is. The new A9ii nails focus every time. I honestly have not seen a difference in resolution with the A9ii vs the A7RIV in these applications. The 61mp is great for studio and mag work. The A9ii is my new press and live event body.

It's all that it claims to be and more

Nov 14, 2019

I have been shooting with the A9 II for 2 weeks now. The auto focus tracking is much more stable and true than the A9 which was very good. The image quality is superb. Auto focus in general seems faster. I love the wider grip. It fits in your hand much more naturally and lets you get to the back focus button much more easily. The voice tagging is a much needed new feature. This camera is everything you could want.

Sony Alpha a9 II

Jan 2, 2020

The revamped Sony Alpha a9 II has an enhanced exterior body design, controls and user interface, and improved weather sealing. Sony has honed both autofocus and image stabilization, changed the shutter mechanism, and improved viewfinder responsiveness. There are enhanced connectivity options, UHS II for the secondary storage slot and improved battery life. It now has a 10 FPS mechanical shutter.

Great Bird In Flight Camera--Hand holding

Jan 27, 2020

Due to our weather in SW MI (very very cloudy in winter) I haven't had a lot of chances to try this camera body out but for 2 times. Even then it was overcast so ISO's were =/ 1600. I shot with the 200-600 mm lens, I had a very high percentage (for me) of keepers. I'll never go back to my other (non-Sony) body for this type of hand holding BIF photography.

New and Improved

Mar 13, 2020

I already experienced the power and performance of the A9 original so the upgrade to the II was a no-brainer. Also an A7R4 owner, I appreciate they're pretty much now a matched set in terms of button layout, easier-to-use lens release button. And a big one for me, a lock on the exposure compensation dial, just like the A7.

Best camera you can get

Mar 2, 2020

Fast focus, perfect tracking for shooting birds. Ultra low noise makes it a perfect camera for night shooting. I am gonna to get rid of the Nikon D850 and A7R2, Dont buy Nikon or Canon these days. They are bulky and lacking high resolution lens that match the capacity of modern digital cameras

Beyond all expectations

Dec 1, 2019

I've had a lot of fine photography equipment over the years but few have dazzled me as much as this Sony body has. This is my first serious Sony and I couldn't be more pleased; it's masterful when it comes to action work, whether it be birds in flights or sports action.

Fantastic AF

Dec 29, 2019

After much research and deliberation I changed from Canon to Sony. I got this camera to replace my Canon 1DX MarkII. Sure I had some misgivings at first as I learned the new system but in less than a month I am comfortable with this camera and have never looked back.

real improvement

Dec 27, 2019

I have had the A9 since soon after it came out. I could not imagine it getting better but it has. The basic AF is about the same but the camera handles so much more smoothly now. Everything is just a bit faster adding up to an even nice experience.

Best. Decision. Ever.

I love this camera after switching from a Canon. The whole system in my opinion is just easier to navigate and the quality of the shots it just outstanding. 10/10 recommend if you have the cash.
