Best fast 50 for Sony.

Feb 5, 2020

Another of a handful of newer FE mount lenses that are able to fully resolve the A7R-IV's 61 meg sensor ... very high performance when shot wide open @ f/1.4. Has 11 rounded iris blades to help provide a pleasing bokeh. Love the separate aperture ring on the lens (but it can be set to A if you prefer using the camera's aperture wheel). Lens is bordering on being a bit big for the A7 series cameras. Seems okay on the A7R-IV because of the deeper grip.

Beautiful Lens

Dec 15, 2019

I needed a 50mm to pair with my 85mm G Master for two camera interviews. I also needed another option for photography. This lens is up to par with my line of G Master lenses and am very happy to have one now.

Replaced all my other lenses!

Loving this lens. I started with sigma 50mm 1.4 art, but returned it for this- native lenses are just so much better (I have a7iii). This has now taken the place of my 24-70mm 2.8 GM and my 85mm 1.8.8 no longer feel the need for either of those nosy of the time, and am using this for all my family and newborn sessions :) love it

Amazing

Nov 18, 2019

Every review is true. I reviewed Flickr image web site to see the quality of this lens. Fantastic! It's quiet and quick to focus. The images are sharp and colors saturated. Everything that I have come to know about Sony optics is proven true with this glass and construction!

Mediocre Perfomance

Sep 6, 2019

Now that I have had this lens for one year, I feel confident that this review is fair. The lens is not crisp in the range of 1.4-1.8 which is the practical measure of a fast lens. Overall it just mediocre. This is a B-team lens with an A-team price. For the last year I have used this lens along with the 85 1.4 GM. The 85 is fabulous. Just outstanding. If I am shooting and the situation is ripe for wide apertures, then I will default to the 8... Show More

Fell apart!

Aug 17, 2019

This lens takes beautiful pictures but the other day my camera was hanging at my side and the glass just fell out of the housing of the lens onto the sidewalk. Sonys warranty is only a year and Zeiss will not warranty any of Sonys products. It seems like I got a defective lens but Sony is not going to warrantee this.

Ridiculously Heavy

Jul 12, 2019

The image quality on this lens is superb, extremely sharp and fun for pixel peeping. However, it is exhaustively heavy which makes one handed shots very difficult if you need to use something else while taking the shot. Easily the kind of thing that makes the difference between needing an assistant for certain tasks and not. Still, I managed to balance it on my Moza Air 2 gimbal, so not so heavy as to ruin it for my video shoots, but it certainly wears out the batteries twice as quick.

Its amazing but big

I really love it its fast, quite, sharp, the 50 focal length is amazing. The only downside its big compared to what Im used to which was the nikon 50mm 1.4. the Nikon one was so so small which makes this huge compared to.

Just started my career as a professional photographer and I love this lens ! It was worth the money . I would recommend getting insurance though because if the lens breaks your heart will break too .. unless you have insurance. Superb quality

Nov 25, 2018

The 50mm is perfect for anybody who thinks 85mm is too tight and the 35mm is too wide. The 50 was the focal length used by the most well-known street photographer of all time, Henri Cartier-Bresson. I think its a beautiful focal length. To me, it is the lens that has the most balance in photography. Theres little sacrifice because it lets you focus in on a particular subject while also giving you enough space to put enough details in the backgrou... Show More

Stunning Piece of Glass

Oct 19, 2018

This is one of the most perfect, if not THE most perfect lens I've ever used. By any metric, it's just amazing. So sharp that my photos look like they came from a medium format camera. Wonderful contrast, color and 'pop.' Beautiful roll-off from the in focus areas to the out of focus ones. Virtually total lack of any chromatic aberration. And in terms of the industrial design, although it's a hefty lens, it feels nice in the hand and exudes quality.

It's not the lens.....

Sep 25, 2018

I purchased this lens February of 2018. This is a very sharp lens. It's big and heavy but very manageable. You forget the weight after you see what this lens can produce. Now in September 2018 I had to make a warranty claim on this lens because of the mount bolt threading on the rear barrel broke. One moment it's fine next I notice the gap between my lens and camera body. Long story short. Sony has a terrible warranty system. Prograde lens without the prograde customer service. Don't expect to be taken care of. My lens has now gone from 1400$ to 2000$ lens. DO NOT BUY SONY GLASS

B&W Magic on My A7Rlll

Sep 3, 2018

Being primarily a B&W fine art photographer, IQ is the at the very top of my equipment demands. This lens on my Sony A7Rlll at F1.4 is producing the most beautiful bokeh with the finest sharp focus area I have come across. I'll leave the technical aside for others to detail, and just say for pure photographic artistry...it is a dream.

Very....special...lens

Aug 27, 2018

If you want that Leica look for your Sony, get this lens. I was on the fence because the 55/1.8 has been my go-to,I love that lens a lot! But this one...it is amazing! I recently had a Leica with the 50 Summicron & this one's results are very similar! How can an image be tack sharp yet have a lovely glow about it? I dont know but this one does. Focuses fast too! Its really on a different level. If you shoot 50(I do for full length portraits etc) then this one could be the best in the world. I havent tried the 50 Summilux but I bet this Sony 50 is close. Plus its really not that heavy.

Spectacular! Really!

Aug 24, 2018

I've used some of the best 50mm lenses on the planet: Canon f1.2, Nikon f1.4, Panasonic Leica and Olympus Pro MFT lenses, and the 50mm Milvus on a D810. I was not prepared for how good the ZA 50/1.4 (on an A7RIII) is! Sharp (but not offensively so), great contrast and color, and bokeh. This is, to put it simply, the best 50mm lens I've ever used. I am sure the 55mm f1.8 is a very good lens, but if you've got the money to spend and aren't concerned about the seize and weight, then GET THIS LENS! (Actually, it's not really that big and heavy!)

Amazing Lens

Aug 22, 2018

I use this lens for nightscapes and low light panos. The focus and aperture rings are smooth with just enough resistance to small adjustments. The sharpness, even wide open is unbelievable. Chromatic aberration and coma is apparent at f/1.4 but smooths out beyond f/2.8 Attached is a pano taken with this lens.

Top Notch!

Aug 17, 2018

I purchased this lens in addition to the 7 iii camera kit (with 28-70mm lens). I have yet to use the kit lens. Although this Zeiss lens is much heavier than the camera body (and almost equally priced) it lives up to it's blue badge-producing fantastically crisp images with unbelievably smooth, creamy bokeh. This lens is an investment. A very, very good investment.

I absolutely love this lens

Nov 11, 2017

I absolutely love this lens! The color, sharpness, and clarity are magnificent. I use it with the Sony a6500 but in the future, I will use it with a full frame A9. If using it with an APS-C sensor camera (like the A6500), the crop factor makes it operate like a 75mm lens. I was a Canon shooter but am switching all to Sony Alpha gear.

Stunningly sharp, effectively perfect optical quality

Aug 3, 2017

This blows away my Canon 50mm f/1.2. It focuses faster, it's sharper, and the rendering and color are gorgeous. Pairs very well with the 35mm f/1.4. Although it's big and heavy, it's certainly more compact and half the weight of the 24-70 f/2.8 GM zoom. For portraits, low light and beautiful color rendition, I can't imagine anything that can compete with this lens. Steve Huff was right, this is the best 50mm lens ever made.
