I originally bought the PG14/185 for my wedding ceremony system, but its range was cutting out at about 50 feet. So I returned it and bought this unit. Shure's "D" suffix indicates this is their relatively new DIGITAL line, like the hugely popular Line 6. Shure states this unit has an effective range of 200' in ideal situations. They lied. In the (Mobile, AL) store, we tested it. The Pro Audio store is in the back. The sales agent took the mic and walked around a solid block wall, down the main floor, around the enclosed acoustic guitar showroom and then out the front door. As soon the front door was closed, it dropped out. Considering the amount of obstructions between the body pack and the receiver, I was impressed. At home, I set it up outside. I measured 200 feet of distance using a 100 foot line and stood there. I turned the mic on and tested it. The vocal clarity was astounding, truly sounding like a wired mic. No static, no fuzziness, nothing. I kept walking further away..keeping line of sight, and every time I stopped and talked, I still heard a perfectly clean "wired" sound. I stopped walking away and testing at 600 feet...this is not a typo...yes, 600 FEET away, because it was too far a walk back. I still heard a perfectly clear and pristine tonal quality that I have NEVER heard before in other typical wireless mics. I am sold on the new Digital technology, and the price is more than worth it to get THIS HIGH a quality. If I could give this 10 stars, I would. One thing about the condenser mic element..it is SENSITIVE!!! Be very cautious with it as it WILL feedback if relatively close to the speakers. (I was at the onset of feedback at 50+ feet). The unidirectional lavalier might be better suited. I am sold on the Digital wireless technology and will be getting rid of my other 2 cordless mics and replacing them with more of the SHURE PGXD models. ... More

There's actually nothing you can find wrong with this new Shure digital microphone. I've been using Shure analog lapel microphones since 1997--17 years at the time of writing this review. 1.) The pick-up of the microphone is much better than their old analog ones that you had to get to as close as possible to your throat without touching it to get a good level. With this new digital set-up, it can be placed at the bottom of a 3-button collared knit shirt and the pick-up is as clear as a summer day in Southern California! 2.) Wow! The receiver unit is so small!!! It's about a third of the size of the old analog units and even the dual antennas are at the most half the height of the old ones. 3.) Even the transmitter unit that you wear is smaller too! Just a moderate amount, but you'll still notice a difference if you're familiar with lapel microphones. They cut down on extra LED's and extra switches with this new digital design. The power button if tapped is "Mute." If you hold it down for 5 seconds it turns off. The LED shows, Power On = Green, Mute = Yellow, Low Battery = Red, I'm gonna die any second now = Flashing Red, no light at all = Too late, I died. 4.) On the transmitter, there's also an imbedded friction rotating dial for Gain. An engineering team definite drank a lot of Starbucks cappuccinos designing this new transmitter. What a state-of-the-art piece of technology!!! 5.) To set up two units you press the channel scan button on the receiver and it automatically scans for the clearest channel. For the transmitter unit you've got to remove the battery cover to expose an infrared window that is used for syncing with the receiver unit. You just aim the two infrared windows at each other and press the sync button once and release. Tadah! You've got the clearest scanned channel and a synced twosome! 6.) The instructions recommend you turn everything on first that could create Radio Frequency (RF) noise, then scan for the clearest channel...nice huh? -I just could find a single thing detrimental about this lapel microphone set-up, only kudos and unexpected pleasant surprises. Don't buy an obsolete analog lapel microphone, buy this AWESOME SHURE PGXD14/93!!! ... More

The PGXD14 is absolutely fabulous! Our band?s bassist and myself have one and have had no troubles at all. The tone from digital is exactly as advertised, ?Pure Tone?. I was using a Mogami gold (now connected to from the receiver to my amp) and the tone is as good, if not better than previously! Unbelievable! VHF/UHF cannot hold a candle to digital and this unit, after much research, is the best value for the money and it is a Shure! Once you go digital, you will never go back to analog wireless!

...for recommending this wireless! For almost 20 years I've tortured wireless devices in the harshest conditions, teaching horsemanship courses in giant metal buildings, dusty arenas and sometimes fighting nearby airport interference. Investing in top-of-the-line wireless over the years has always proved a good investment, as my voice is my product, and for the conditions, most units really did pretty well...or so I thought! If a location was particularly bad that I'd continuously cut out or get feedback, I'd just have to turn off my mic and bring all the riders in for instruction and send them back out to practice, which can be dangerous if someone gets into trouble and I'm without a voice to help them from a distance. At the end of a full day of instruction, I'd collapse from exhaustion when the sound was giving me fits (difficult horses weighing 1200 lbs are easier for me to manage!). On a particularly bad weekend, my husband broke away from the conference to a nearby Guitar Center and brought back this unit to change out with. What a DIFFERENCE!! Sound is perfectly clear, the unit easily tucks away and stays secure even with physical activity, and distance is no longer an issue. I can go about anywhere at any speed (horses are fast!) and remain perfectly understood by all participants. Best of all, I feel fresh at the end of the day!! What I do can be physically demanding, and having unreliable or less-than-optimum sound adds another layer of unnecessary effort on my part. So, saying thank you is actually an understatement for what this product has done for my business and for me personally! ... More

It sounds like I am using a cable. You can be very far away from your amp which is really cool. The batterys last along time. Don't waste your time on the cheap ones out there, they break, have no channels, you pick up radio stations, you will loose tone, cut out. Take my advice and save up the extra money and get this or be dissapointed by the cheaper kits out there and end up buying this one any ways. ... More

I think these are good microphones, but they would not work properly in my conference room and kept dropping the audio. Shure thinks it is because of interference. We tried multiple system groups with different channels, but could not get the system working properly. Luckily we had a wired microphone that could be used or it would have been a major issue. Shure's documentation says up to 5 systems, but their tech support said that was only in the best of all possible worlds and had me start with just one microphone to see if that would work. It didn't. I ended up renting a wireless system. The system that worked was in the 600MHz range, not the 900MHz range. I am returning all of the PGXD microphones as I will only use them in that one venue. If you use these microphones be sure to test them extensively before the event. We did sound checks, but did not detect that after about a minute the audio would drop for about 15 seconds. It was not until the speaker was presenting that the problem became evident! The sound quality was good, when they were working, so if you don't have interference in the venue, then I think they could be very good microphones. ... More

For the little bit of extra money for this mic it is WELL worth it. We have used it 6 times so far and it has not had one hiccup including a breezy day on the water... on the playback (we record the ceremony) you could hear the waves and not the wind. There are some obvious cheapnesses sic to the product like the overabundance of plastic and the fact that it won't rack-mount. I don't care about either because I use it for public speaking and it works great. The WL93 lav mic that comes with it is nice and cheap so I don't have to be super careful with it. I alternatively use it with an earset mic (Point-Source Audio CO-6). The auto setup is stupidly easy and the sound quality is superb with full spectrum performance - no companding! Also, the noise floor is higher than I'd wish, but not high enough to actually be a problem for what I use it for. Nobody will notice but picky ol' me. I'm glad I got this setup. I was torn about whether or not to give it 5 stars. I think 4 stars is fair and should still be an indication that this is a good buy. ... More

I recently bought this to use in the classroom. It does its job and it does it well. We have built-in speakers in our class so I did have to buy the male to female adapter. I like the mute button that allows me to mute it while talking privately then quickly switching over to turn it back on for the whole class. I might have to keep turning off/on, though, because I noticed that after the second day, the batteries had died. Or I'll invest in some rechargeable batteries. I also like that we can change channels because a few other teachers have the same system, so we can toggle between channels so we don't hear each other. I can clip the mic on my necklace, too, and it doesn't interfere with the sound. A+ ... More
