Not up to Zoom's usual high standards

We own the Zoom H5 and love the unit, and the modular capsule system is a good feature. Naturally you'll get the best signal going in through a XLR input with a high quality mic, but the capsules are mighty handy for run & gun, The two optional Zoom shotgun capsules are first rate, but this XYH-5 ( provided the H5 and H6) has been a disappointment. It's been okay for capturing ambiance and BG tracks, though the gain needs to be cranked to nearly max, depending o the environment. For interviews you'll need it closer to subject that is usually required for similar mics. We'd have much preferred the kit be shipped with a shotgun, or an option to pick our own capsule at an appropriate price-point. We're not really using this YH-5 - X/Y and only keeping it in case we sell our H5 to upgrade. We're looking for someone who has another YH-5 - X/Y to se if or might be defective. Plastic mounts for microphones cheap and fragile!

Have had the Zoom H5 for 8 months now and I love it's ease of use and very clean sound, as for the bad reviews I have seen about the XYH-5 mic capsule- am not experiencing that. The XY capsule sounds very open and crisp. I could suggest though, the XYH-6 capsule has better bass response along with very crisp highs, because it has bigger diaphrams in the capsules. Of course you will get better sound using a higher quality mic through the XLR ins. Am very happy with the H5.
OK But Fragile

I agree with another reviewer that said the mounts are too fragile. Mine also broke! Although, I do like the sound and the sensitivity outside is OK for marching bands.

Same sound quality you expect from Zoom recorders. The vibration dampening actually works. Noticably less handleing noise when compared to the H4N. 90 degree only but it's not an issue for me as I rarely if ever changed my H4N mic to 120 degrees. Very well built and solid feeling.

The Gain needs to be on turned up all the way and the sound it capturs is really terrible. It has a hard time capturing voices.

This comes with the Zoom H5. It has great crisp sound and the small vibration mounts keep the handling noise out of the sound. Great product!
microphone input doesn't work and audio sounds muffled

Zoom should have included the XYH-6 it sounds like from the reviews. The sound from this mic sounds muffled. I also tried connecting a lapel mic into the input on this and couldn't get enough amplification to make it recordable...makes the H5 only able to record using XLR microphones. Zoom should have allowed us to pick microphones w/ the H5.
