First thing I did was slip one of the mics onto the included overly-tight mic clip and it popped the SP logo plate right off the mic, which was cheaply glued on. Not very quality construction here, they're very light, thin and hollow feeling. I would handle these things extremely delicately! But the sound is not bad. The first thing I tried them as was drum overheads. In Cardioid, they did not hold up to my cherished 414's, but the omni capsules brought out a little more warmth from the kit (but unfortunately too much room). I found they worked best as distant omni room mics. The sound is very clean, very low noise, with almost a dark flavor. They work well on piano too, again not too much luster in the sound, but a warm, even tone. Perhaps slightly brittle in the high frequency range. The Omni capsules are my fav. Definitely usable, definitely musical, and definitely bang for the buck. I got the extended warranty, and I handle them the same as I would an antique ribbon mic...so hopefully they should last! ... These are a remarkable value. Excellent sound (a quality knock off of Neumann KM100 series design). You get a stereo pair with 3 capsule choices for each mic at less than half the price of a single KM100. Be careful when changing capsules - the threading can get stripped if capsules are not aligned right. And don't expect the support you would get from Neumann if they break (though buying a new set is likely less than a repair from Nuemann - and we had a pair for over 12 years, with students using them, before they finally failed).

Sound fantastic but too delicate

Sadly I had to return these mics. They sound absolutely great and have very low noise, but I bought them to upgrade from my MXL603s for recording nature sounds, and these just couldn't cut it. They can't handle the slightest humidity and even popped crackled in 55F temperatures. The MXLs don't sound as nice but they can at least tolerate being outdoors. These C4s are fantastic if you want to use them as studio mics though (which is obviously their intended purpose).

Great Mics for the money!

Great little mics. These are fantastic if you want a clean, low-noise small diaphragm condensor. The omni capsules are FANTASTIC if you want a bigger, more detailed, more spacious stereo sound. That cardoids are quite good, and I haven't used the hypercardioids yet, but it's nice to have them there for whenever I might need them. The mics felt quite well made to me, perfectly tight clips (slide them in carefully and they'll hold, not like some where they bobble, no worries about a mic falling down here), and a nice aluminum body, as well as a beautiful presentation case and useful stereo bar. ... It was interesting to try out these C4s for several applications in the past week. These are no Schoeps but have to say they are surprisingly true and rather 'airy' (aka tinny) in the higher end. That being said they performed more favorably than my AKG 451 pair yet cost a third of the price. Generally speaking you get what you pay for with mics, however in this case I got more than expected. Overall a nice versatile little package that would stand up well as main x-y pair, instrument spots or overheads. I would recommend the C4's for value and versatility to add to more substantial mic locker. ... More

I would have been happy to get these at triple the price! They are just outstanding mics. I've used all the big boys (KM84, 451, CMC6, etc) and these while not quite as transparent are good enough for most recording situations. They sound great on my piano and my Larivee acoustic guitar. I'm sure I will find many more uses.

Great Versatile Studio mics on a budget

These microphones are fantastic, particularly at this price point. Not only do you get good build quality and low self-noise, but some very useful cadioid, hypercardioid, and omnidirectional capsules, making them a very useful set of small diaphragm condensers. Excellent Value, great in the studio or live, particularly for classical or acoustic music.
