Sony ECM-680S M/S Stereo Shotgun Microphone

I tested this against the Sony ECM-MS2, AT8010, and AT875R, by connecting and gaining all to a similar level on a DR-701D. Granted these all have their own use cases, this mic just swept the floor with the others in sound quality. Deeper, richer bass, more clarity, and greater sensitivity. It's also nice that it decodes stereo in the mic but offers mono output with sideband rejection. I've used this as my primary mic on my FS7 for wedding and church service videos. The resulting recording is precisely what you heard when recording. Since it is stereo, it uses both XLR inputs, but through the SMADP3 adapter and a UWPD1130, I run a soundboard output into channel 3 on the FS7 using the hot shoe. ... More

Great mic!

I primarily use this mic for field recording, and it does quite a good job! It captures a very clear, life-like sound. Highly recommended if you want to do some outdoors recording. Only complaints: it would be nice to have an option to output the unprocessed mid and side components (or a width control), and a battery power option would be great too. Still love it!

VERY NICE!

We use this microphone on our Sony PDW-F800 camera - it's incredibly clean sounding and rich. Two things I'd like to see different though. The first is that the switches are very exposed. I'm concerned about dust, dirt, etc, they should be mounted on the underside of the microphone as it clearly has a top and bottom. The second thing, the windscreen that comes with the microphone doesn't work well - you will want to replace it immediately if you will be using it outdoors.

I just added the ECM-680S to my A7C configuration. The ECM-680S on the XLR-K3M Channels 1-2 and the URX-P03D Channels 3-4 with 2 UTX-B40 wireless mics. I can switch between the Shotgun and Wireless Mics during the recording. The Stereo on the ECM-680S works great. I did not need to do any post production on the audio. It's all mounted on a Smallrig cage with a Sony 5 Monitor. The configuration weights 6 lbs 4 Oz with a neck sling.

Great sound pickup

I really love this mic. It has a great frequency range. I tested it against 3 other mics I had, and it blew them away. The bass pickup was much better on this one too. I first used it in a wedding with an FS7, and the recording sounded as good as using the direct output from the soundboard.
