After much deliberation in which hand-held microphone to purchase, I eventually settled on the Shure SM63L. Intending to use the microphone in a crowded convention setting, the lack of initial reviews had me a little nervous. I'm happy to report that any doubt was unfounded. While it wasn't used in the very crowded show floor, it was used in slightly less crowded areas and preformed very well. As an Omni microphone, you were able to hear background noise, but the subject speaking was very distinct from other noise. In interviews, the microphone preformed well again, giving good audio when held between subjects. Some volume loss was experienced (and expected) if the microphone wasn't pointed at, or held evenly between subjects. Due to budget and time circumstances, I intended to use this microphone on an XLR splitter with another microphone which required phantom power. Unable to contact Shure before the event, I did not end up utilizing this setup, opting instead to use the mics separately. In speaking with a Shure representative after the event, they assured me this microphone would NOT be damaged by phantom power (Note: Confirm with Shure before attempting). I feel the microphone could use slightly better bass sensitivity, but if the trade-off was less handheld noise (to which this microphone seems very good at preventing) I'm willing to live with that. I'd very highly recommend this microphone for interview and reporting style work and even light/quick voice-over work. Looking forward to using this microphone more in the future. ... More

We have used dozens of these for electronic news gathering systems (ENG). They are fairly rugged and deliver very good sound quality. The mic element takes a fair amount of abuse, has very good isolation from handling noise, and delivers good levels to ENG cameras without phantom power. The extra length also helps ENG, especially for use with a flag. The only problem with them is that after plugging and unplugging an XLR cable repeatedly, the set screw for the connector tends to loosen. If you don't tighten it, the connector will pull out and ruin the mic. I think they are a little expensive for what they are yet we buy them anyway because they are a really good ENG handheld mic. ... More

When I first used the SM63L microphone, I wasn't sure that I was using it properly... I plugged the adapter into my Canon 5D MKII and my Canon t3i and went on to record some interviews... when I played back on camera, all you hear is hissing... without wanting to research too much I will assume that the Canon won't playback stereo captured sound. BUT!!!... when I downloaded the video to my laptop for further review, I was immersed in sound... I honestly have to say that the sound over-shadowed my video without a doubt... If you are looking for a microphone that will deliver crisp, clear sound quality, even in the loudest environments (let's say Expos) this is the mic to get. ... More

I bought this as an ENG mic so I wouldn't have to have so much hiss from turning up the gain on an SM-58 I had. It produces a bigger sound, but with a similar dryness (which I actually prefer). It compared well to mics like the Beyerdynamic M58, but sounded less bright or metallic with my voice. Like lots of Shure dynamic microphones, it seems pretty indestructable (I haven't pitched it down a flight of stairs just yet, though.) Solidly built, clean sound, and bigger output than most dynamic microphones. I'd buy a second one without hesitation.

I don't have much experience buying microphones, but my research indicated that this is a good mic from Shure, one of the leaders in the market. The SM63 looks great, is well made and handles well, but it's noisy. I'm running this into a Lectrosonics wireless setup to do roving interviews, and it's just noisy. To make sure it isn't the rest of the setup, I tried an old Azden (granted, a more expensive mic) and it sounded great. So the Sure has been relegated to backup status.

We use this mike for HOA meetings ( a 55 and older very active community). Our previous mikes needed to be held almost exactly horizonally and needed to be almost touching your lips. While we have used this one very little yet I know that the residents will appreciate not having to be told where to hold it every meeting. I just wish we could find this nice a Omni-directional mike that was wireless and affordable.

Forget your RE50/B's and get out of the '50s. Give up your hammers and get this one. Every bit as rugged, but better freq response, and contoured right at the speech points of the spectrum. Hears up to 20 KHz, +/- 3 db down to 80 Hz. No need for low cut filter. Speech is clear and fresh, like a spring brook.
