I have been playing since the 70's, and used Beta 58's forever. The Beta 87A makes the 58's sound muddy and poorly defined, almost the difference between speaking with someone live versus over the phone. A wonderful stage mike and it doesn't get too boomy when you get close (proximity effect). Excellent feedback resistance also, highly recommended.

I bought this mic a couple of months ago from GC and I was a bit hesitant because of the price...and the SM58 was much cheaper and sounds pretty good. But I'm very very pleased that I went with this mic instead The clarity that comes through is amazing. Everywhere I've used this mic so far..people come up to me with rave reviews about how pure and clean the sound was on the mic. It's also excellent for recording purposes..especially live!

Best vocal mic in its price range

The Shure Beta 87 is a standard for live vocals. The headroom and sound on this mic is what you need to cut through the mix. Compared to a Shure SM58, there is a huge difference in response. You can sing easier because you don't have to work as hard. This vocal mic comes as close to a Nuemann KMS105 as you can get without spending more than twice as much. I've used this mic for years and it is by far the best bang for the buck when it comes to live vocals.

Great mic... but beware of tight spaces.

I have used the beta 87a for a variety of situations. I specifically bought it for use on stage during my solo acoustic performances. i started playing with it in a small venue where i had my back basically in the corner of the room and a large crowd of people very close to me. the beta 87a was way too sensitive to all the noise bouncing off the walls behind me and cut out. other than that, it has been fantastic for recording vocals in my home studio. i have even used it to record some acoustic guitar and it has performed exceptionally well. i am a little hesitant to use it in smaller venues now, though. ... I have been a SM58 user for over 30 years and thought I would never own another mike. A friend told me this was the next last microphone I would ever buy so I thought I would try it out. The phrase blown away came to mind as soon as I spoke through it let alone sing through it. The clarity of this microphone is incredible. Of course I was used to the 58, but I am still so impressed with the sound. The difference it makes with recording is not even comparable.

I've been performing my own gigs for about 5 years now, and I also have been leading worship for my church for around 6 years. I had always sworn by the SM58's (extreemly durable, great sound) and thought that I would never switch from using them. however, no matter how well they performed it always seemed like something was missing from my vocals. This all changed when I bought my first beta 87a. Ever detali and inflection in my voice could be heard. Many people who had regularly heard me sing commented on how much better the sound quality was when I first used it! I have never had such detailed and clear sounding vocals in a live setting. I even started using this mic to record in my studio. It is top quality for a very reasonable price! If you have never used a condensor to perform live I highly reccomend it and reccomend this product! You won't regret buying this and may even want to buy more as a back up! I'll keep my SM58's but they will only gather dust as I continue to use this fine piece of equipment ... More

Hmmm. Imagine a mic that gives a vocalist an edge. An ability to sear through and over loud instrumentation. This is THE microphone! I've used the industry standards, and the high-end studio mics. This is the microphone for projecting your voice through the mains in a live setting in a way that seems to contradict conventional experience. After the gig, you're not as hoarse because, you don't have to work as hard. You may actually find yourself changing up your breathing, adding inflection and pop scoops that you never would have thought of before. Give the SM 58 to the background vocalists. But for leads, buy this mic. You'll have no regrets! ... More

It has the most natural sound for my voice.I will recomand this Shure 87A to everyone who is looking for natural sound.I don't have any problems with it.

We sing Southern Gospel Music and have traditionally always used the SM58. A few years ago we went with the Audio Technica 3000 series wireless. While the A.T.'s did well for us, batteries and frequency issues caused us to go back to corded mics. Harmony is a BIG part of our music and we found that the Beta 87a mics are crystal clear. They are easy to mix individually and clean. Audiences frequently tell us that every word can be heard and understood. We credit a very good sound tech for that but the mics are definitely a huge part of it as well. We bought 3, and have recently added a bass singer. He wants his own Beta 87 and i'm ordering one for him as soon as I finish this review.... which is right now! ... More

Our church bought 5 mics to try them out head to head and everyone in the room agreed that this was their favorite mic, both on male and female vocals. The other mics we tested were the Shure Beta58a (this was the overall 2nd favorite mic), Shure SM58, Shure KSM9, Senheisser e935, Senheisser e835. I have been a die-hard beta58a user for many, many years. This mic has the same great fullness to it that the SM58 & Beta58a have. But the clarity in the high range and the attention to detail is on another level. A very clean, clear and crisp vocal. You can tell that it is a "condenser" mic. It picks up the little details that most mics miss. You will notice that you can hear more of the singers technique. You can hear where they take breaths and all the little nuinces. ... More

Just picked this up today, after reading many positive reviews. This is by far the best vocal mic I have ever used. Singing into this cuts through the mix beautifully, and the clarity and power of the mic really improves my vocals. No worries about placement, etc., just sing into it and you will sound better than ever before, I guarantee it. Wish I could afford two of them! I was able to push this so it cut through the mix with zero feedback! It rejected the ambient sounds around it, and this is just in my home studio, where the speaker system is close by. I expect this to perform wonderfully on stage at my next gig. ... More

I've been using this mic for the last six years as the worship leader at my church. It is terrific, I can easily hear the difference between this mic and even an SM58 (which is also a good mic, no dis intended) but the beta is much more rich and full. Also it is very durable and dependable (its been dropped a bunch of times but still works great) after six(plus)years it still rocks. Plus I gotta say it looks nice, which doesn't hurt.

You will be glad you finally got one.

I have used the sm57 and beta57 for over 20 years and can’t believe I waited this long to buy this mic. Plus, Yuou can find great deals on reverb, so there is no reason you shouldn’t buy this mic. I got one for $100 and another for $125. (No brainer) Put it like this, Once guys the guys in the band heard the difference, they all got one. This is a major step up from the 57 or 58 with far better clarity and noise rejection when compared to the beta mics. Bottom line. Quit waiting and buy this mic.

I have had a Beta 87A for over a decade and it is my go-to mic for any and all vocals as well as many instrument applications. It has the rugged durability of a 58 for hard road use, but it has the sound quality to also make for a great studio workhorse. The SC pattern makes for good sound isolation on stage. Overall, this is the one mic that I can't live without.

I live by this thing! It sounds amazing, low occurance of feedback. Super clarity, reasonable price for what you're getting. The only problem that I've had is that the guts come out with the XLR sometimes. It's all in one piece, and you can reconnect pretty easily, but it's a pain. No other mic sounds as good, though.
