I am a radio news reporter in a major U.S. market. I have used many different microphones in the field. Hands down, the Sennheiser MD46 is the best. At this point, I wouldn't take anything else out. It sounds clearer than other mics, rejects surrounding noise better, accommodates a mic flag nicely, has a great balanced feel in the hand and is the perfect size and weight if I had to defend myself behind police lines. That hasn't happened yet but you never know when what will happen when you report live from crime scenes. Watch your local news at night, chances are the reporters in the field are using the wireless version. Almost all reporters use the Sennheiser. There is a reason for that. If you are going to interview in a noisy area and want pro sounding audio...use what the pros use. Go with the cardioid pick up pattern, NOT the omni directional. Last week, I interviewed patrons in a noisy pub, Led Zeppelin was blaring in the background. When I cut up the audio for the story, it was barely there. The audio came out fantastic. I just bought my own just in case the station's were all checked out so I'll never be without my MD 46. ... More

Once the cable lock (little metal piece in the button edge of the XLR connection wears off a little bit, the cable (or transmitter piece) does not lock anymore. That is a big problem.

This dynamic microphone is dynamic for noisy backgrounds!

A producer who markets CDs for high school reunions encouraged me to buy this particular MD 46 mic to use because of the noisy background environments of those video jobs. We interview 50-90 people at each one of these reunions. Two years ago I could not afford the expense of the Sennheiser transmitter and receiver and waited for Rode's transmitter to be marketed separately. I just recently got the Rode Transmitter and this MD 46 mic and it works beautifully. Many of you will laugh at what I was using before-a Sony Bluetooth AW3 wireless microphone taped to a non working Karaoke microphone! These are outstanding Chap Stick size mics that are better than nothing, but no where near the quality and performance of the Sennheiser MD 46 that isolates the majority of background chatter and noise and is network quality. And here's a valuable tip that may save you the grief I had on the first job when I couldn't get the Rode transmitter to pair up with the Rode receiver: You sometimes have to push the RED button INSIDE the Rode receiver for it to pair up. Wish I had known that the first time I tried because I had to go back to the Sony Mickey Mouse Mic that night to save the show and got this tip from the Rode tech guy in their San Diego office. Bottom line, after a successful job last night with this new mic, I'm in love with the Sennheiser MD 46! ... More

I teach at a journalism school and this is downright the best ENG microphone in the industry. This thing is like a rock. We had a student drop one in water during a flood while filming her documentary in India. After returning, we let it dry out for about a week and the thing still works beautifully. Omni-directional microphones capture way too much ambient sound, especially in noisy situations. This has just enough cardioid to make it directional, but allow flexibility if the interviewee turns their head or the sound trails off.

I use the mic in typical ENG fashion, on locations that are often noisy in the background. This mic, however, only picks up a low ambient background that add color to the recording. The handling noise that is common to many microphones is thankfully missing, even when persons handling the mic aren't careful about hand movements. The mic feels great in the hand, sounds great for many types of voices and has many useful applications.

After more than a decade using my Shure SM58 as an interview mic, I decided to upgrade to the Senn MD46 based on reviews and how extensively it is used. The MD46 is a handsome mic, and based on testing but no practical use so far, a solid performer. But the SM58 will remain in my bag. The MD46 has better off-axis rejection than the SM58. It sounds good nine inches or more from the speaker's mouth. However, when close to the mouth the MD46 sounds muddled and prone to plosives. The SM58 sounds good whether on the lips of the speaker or further away. In a very noisy environment, my preference would be the SM58 because it holds up well to close miking. This generally requires directing the speaker to hold the mic just below their mouth. For more conventional location interview situations, where the correspondent holds the mic, the MD46 will be my choice. ... More

I use this mic to gather postgame interviews following baseball games, mostly in the clubhouses and connected to a Marantz PMD620 recorder. Overall the audio quality comes out great for broadcast - there is a bit more handling noise than I prefer, but I suspect this will go away as I learn to handle it properly. I also like that it's a bit longer than standard mics, although there is a bit of a trade-off if you have to hold it out to gather audio at arm's reach. It seems to have good rejection of ambient noise while being able to collect quality audio when focused on the subject. But overall - a really nice mic that works great for a broadcast application. ... More

Ok... I love the sound of this mic. The longer handle has a nice reach and of course the construction is what you would expect. Since I am a fan of this company I don't mind the Sennheiser logo where it is but for some people I can see where this could be an issue. When used with an SKP100 or SKP300 it is rather long but when a flag is on it you still have a good place for handling it. Very little if any handling noise when used with just a little common sense. I actually go out of my way to do personal projects just so I can use this Mic. ... More

As someone who does a lot of work at noisy events, conferences and festivals this mic has been fantastic. It isolates interview subjects beautifully while keeping a very nice natural sound. I currently own two, one is about 6 years old while the other is about 3 and they both work as new. Pair it with a wireless system and it works great as an ENG style mic, Ive used them both with the Rode and Sennheiser systems and had no complaints. Ive also stuck it on a C-stand for long form interviews and had great results. I would recommend buying a foam windshield for pops and shooting outside. A great value Mic ... More

I have not had it long enough to know how it will hold up. I use the MD 46 Microphone for on the video street interviews as well as in the studio for VO. Great dynamic mic. It has a nice warm sound. No power source needed so makes for great use in the field. I hook it up to my wireless system so the interviewer can walk around freely. It is heavy, but great construction. It is cordial, so it dose have a very specific sound pick up close to the mic head. Back ground noise is limited, but still there. It dose have some handling noise, but not to bad. Over all I am happy with the mic for the price and how I have used it so far. ... More

affordable high quality mic offers supreme rejection from background noises and most side noises. absolutely no power (phantom or PIP) is required for this mic to work efficiently. The microphone is a little on the heavy side so get comfortable holding it before interviewing and get accustom to wearing headphones since there is handling noise but that would be the case for any microphone. Pros: This is a great directional dynamic talent hand mic for stadium, arena or even auto racing environments. It was designed in cooperation with NBC Sports for the Olympics. We've used it in NFL pre-game shows on the field with great results. The talent must be instructed that this is a directional vs. omni mic so it has to be pointed properly at the person speaking. The cons are the handle is a little too long compared to an RE-50. Its a little bit heavy and I wish the Sennheiser logo was not so prominent. I don't want a logo to distract from what a viewer is watching on the air. ... More

We love this mic. Currently we are using it for public comment, sitting on a stand with a Sony Wireless plug in the end. The wireless plug 'clicks' in and remains secure (not like other microphones) and the mic sounds great. There is a bit of low-end handling noise but that was because we had the general public using it. You probably won't notice with a professional holding it. No worries about feedback since the off-axis rejection is really good. We plan on using it for ENG as well and already know it will be a top performer.
