Some SM57 clones are much closer in sound. This mic sounds good but is brighter. It is far more susceptable to feedback, which means the EQ has resonances that aren't accurately reflected in any documentation. That said the mic does sounds good and just brighter than the SM57. It just doesn't sound as musical. It especially does not sound as good on acoustic guitars. However, it actually sounds a bit better on voice narration. There is TON of handling noise so don't think it can be hand held without bumps and thumps. It is out of phase to SM57, which is no problem as long as you can flip phase on your board. This low cost mic is worth every cent, and maybe even about $ more. FYI - the low end Shure Mics sound much more musical and have a street price of around $. This mic is good to have in a large collection for what it does well, but if your just buying one - not this one! ... More

When you open the box containing these, you will think you are looking at a Shure SM57 microphone, first of all, and they are in every aspect very close to the sound of the SM57's, though they are 1/10th as expensive..!! I am using these Pyle PDMIC78's to mike my drums...even the kick drum sounds great...I learned all this from a video on YouTube (see YouTube URL below) ..but let me clarify...though these mikes are inexpensive, I wouldn't say they are CHEAP in quality at all.....I set these up with my drums using the Glyn Johns technique, and you can find that on YouTube (see YouTube URL below)..and it all works VERY well for recording and live applications, as well as just for studio jamming..if you are on a tight budget and need some inexpensive microphones, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND these PYLE PDMIC78 microphones...! ... I bought this microphone because I was in need of microphones to record guide tracks for choirs. I needed a simple mic and the SM57 look is perfect because it's plain and simple. This is not an SM57! And it doesn't need to be because it is still a great mic. I use it for individual voices on choirs, voice overs, acoustic guitars, electric guitars, ukuleles, and drums. Because it's a dynamic, it isolates the sound fairly well. I love this microphone. I own 3 of them all from B&H. I own a studio and actually don't even own even one real SM57 because I don't need it. This does a great job. I have plenty of experience and a Bachelor's Degree in Music Recording. I've also used them on kick drums and they sound surprisingly well. I've also used this microphone at a live event where the speakers were using these microphones. The only thing that I can list as a con is that the connector at the bottom became loose. All I had to do was push the little plastic plate that holds the xlr pins in and problem solved! ... More

I purchased 5 of these for drum mics for recording into Garageband. These are just a little brighter than the 57's I have, but this is not even an issue when running through a mixer. My friend that is a drummer is going to replace an inexpensive set of drum mics with 7 of these for less than $100.00. I won't bother paying for a 57 ever again. Great microphone!

This thing really does look and feel like one of the most well-known workhorse mics in the world. To me, the midrange sounds scooped... but not in a bad way. This mic is totally usable, but I wouldn't trust it in a demanding situation or environment. For home recording, it should work just fine. I can't speak to it's long-term durability, as mine are still pretty new. The price just makes it a no-brainer for a basic general purpose instrument mic or a decent backup. Try it and you'll probably end up using it more often than you thought you would. ... More

If you need an inexpensive microphone for voice recordings or public address, this microphone can meet your needs. Its put together in a sturdy metal shell. The soldering on the wires is not very good, and the wires are very thin. There is no transformer, so it does not have true balanced output. But for the money, it rocks! I call it a disposable microphone. If your mic users tend to drop mics or walk off with them, this mic is a good choice because you wont be out much money! i use this Pyle PDMIC78 microphone for home recording on guitar amps, snare drum and vocals. very sturdy construction and very easy to get a great sound from it. the only thing i didn't like was the XLR to 1/4cable that comes with it. sounds much better with a XLR-XLR low impedance cable. i can't believe the low price! it is impossible to go wrong with this purchase and B&H shipped it to me lightning fast Thanks!

At first I thought by the price I was setting myself up for disaster, but oh was I wrong. I hooked this up and for a non powered mic, its amazing. The only thing I regret is that the first person I had use it had the worst voice I have ever heard in my life, she was so bad. So bad I even shut down the mixer and said I had some things I had to adjust... But, this mic delivers crisp and clear sound for a small fee. Great for all you budget seekers!

I used this mic for a vocal track as soon as I recieved it to check the quality and it performed very well. The track came out very clean. It's almost comparable to my way more expensive mics. It's not quite as sensitive, but I just turned the channel up a little more on my board.

I will never spend the money on a Shure again. My drummer friend is replacing his Samson microphones with these.
