In contrast to how it is worded in the description of the mics, the 551 is NOT a large diaphram mic. This is a repackaging of the 990-991 combo mics. Both the 550 and 551 have the same diaphram size. Same splashy, harsh top end....

I'm a musician and home recording my own stuff. I used these mics both for close miking acoustic instruments and overall ambiance miking, and they gave very good performance in both. I'm not so much obsessive about flat frequency response, and I'm not running a full equipped studio; so these are more than enough for me. Unbelievably great performance for the price, especially on acoustic instruments, low weight, works directly with the 48V phantom power of my firewire sound interface, also suitable for stereo ambiance miking as a pair when needed, with a really slight difference in frequency response. Worst thing about them is, although it's said that they are cardioid, they are in fact somewhere between cardioid and omni. ... More

The mics are perfect for recording to a laptop via a Lexicon Omega and cubase LE 4. Vocal mic is warm & responsive. Instrument mic is amazingly well balanced. Placed in a boom directly over the drum kit this mic picks up everything clearly and naturally, even the kick drum.No complaints about anything yet.Note: B&H price was $ less than everybody else on the web ... Overall very satisfied with the mics and B&H

I use these microphones for home recording of instruments, vocals and drums. They are a nice addition to the MXL microphones I already own. If you've never used a condenser microphone this is a great place to start. The audio clarity sounds vastly different from using a regular handheld dynamic microphone. If your looking for a step up with a reasonable price this is a perfect microphone set to purchase. The ensemble kit only gives the user two basic microphone mounts which is sort of cheap in comparison to the fancy shock mounts. Great mics simple mounts.

I am a recent audio grad and not having a lot of money I bought this kit and WOW! In class I was able to use a lot of high dollar mics and these 2 mics have helped me get that high quality without going broke. Both mics have a cardiod pattern and really good Freq. response for vocals or any acoustic instrument. If you are wanting good sound without having to brake the bank, this is your deal.

i bought 2 sets of these in dec of 2015 or a Christmas production. i used the 2 550's on thetimpani's, one of the 551's on the chimes, the other one on flute and they sounded great. i use them for all of our productions and use one of the 550's on the electric guitar on a regular basses. do keep in mind that they are still only $80, but i would defiantly recommend them.

These are really good sounding mics for the money, an excellent value. They look good and sound better. Nice that they come complete with holders. I use them for recording vocals and my acoustic piano. Takes some practice to get the right distance to the mic but when you get it right it sounds great. Good little storage case too. Sounds just as good as my AT2020.

I had a 603 and liked it for certain instruments. I read that the 551 is essentially the same mic, so I purchased the set for that. But I was pleasantly surprised by the 550 for vocals. The 551 is as expected.
