I bought those intrigued by reviews by few reviewers that I respect and believe some 80%. Didn't expect much, maybe a cheaper version of T1. Boy, was I first, wrong, and second, surprised, in a way I never hoped to be. Ok, I'm a fanatic audiophile, going the other way of mainstreem, for example, my rig is my old Sony C-15ESd and my Sony C - 8 ES as a transport, or Xeon based pc server with Lynx Hilo Dante/Usb as dac only, and heavily modified DarkVoice 336SE, with Sophia Royal pre, and, usually, Svetllana 8060 or some of my 5998 power tubes. So, I'm a very, very, and again very difficult guy to please. I own, and use, two pairs of HD800, pre revision(s) and a new one. Dekoni pads, or not. I have Stax L500 with SRM- 252S, prepowered by tube anp. All of this after years of exploration, and hundreds of cans. Hey, I recently sold my LCD-3, for being boring!. So, my expectations were, just another Tesla cans, but let's see what all the hipe is about. Hehe, sometimes, but almost never,even a sceptic like me gets proven wrong, in a most unbelievable way. Hey, for $600 or less(?) I run into, and I mean it, a serious, very much, contender to LCD-X, but with velour pads instead, and than again, if I miss my HD800 sound, two pairs of them, A and B. I apologise for the long intro, just wanted you to know where I'm coming from and what my expectations were. If you like what I like, and it's obvious by now, hey, for $600, you get yourself cans of LCD-X and HD800 level in details, but with smaller soundstage from HD800, but much better low end, and less silky mids than LCD-X, with same agresive signiture and impact. And no leather pads, but velour, but two of them, and no aluminum case, but 18/10 stainless steel. Leather headband. End of story. ... More

The DT1990 is an outstanding headphone and they could be an "end game" headphone. If you upgrade to the Elite Hybrid Dekoni pads, you unlock "new game plus." The pronounced "ssss" region is tamed down and the sub bass is highly improved. Some other headphones I have owned and tried: LCD-X, NDH20, Sundara, SRH1840, and K712 pro. If you are a musician interested in the best of the best headphone under $1000, DT1990 + Dekoni Pads it's all you need. Ananda and Sundara - QC issues. NDH20- kill ears, why would you want to kill your ears? and sound muffled. SRH1840 - decent option (similar to DT1990 in some regards). K712 pro - more for gaming than monitoring. LCD-X is superior than the DT1990 but you also have to pay double the price. The DT1990 is an easy recommendation. 10/10 with Dekoni pads - 9/10 with balanced pads - 8.2/10 with analytical pads. ... Came very quick and they are very nice. Have not changed the cups out yet. I hear that can be a pain but the sound is great and they are super comfortable. The case is very nice and I like the fact they come with two different sizes of wire. Expensive, but worth it.
