i tried the shure sm 58 and it was no match for the akg d 5. i'm a singing drummer and this was my best mic ever. the clarity and crisp sound was awsome. in our band room the lead guitarist has a sure sm 58 and he told me there was no better because of it's popularity and wide use,but when he heard the akg d 5 even he was impressed with the new technology and sound of this mic. it's better than the sure sm 58 . you will not regret this buy.

I have some very good mics...e945, OM7, PR22, ATM 10 condenser, and an older SM58 that fits my voice, but have read so many positive D5 reviews, I had to try it. First, let me say that I do acoustic music and am currently in an Irish/Celtic trio. My voice is in the range of Jackson Browne...high alto and not at all bassy. When I first set up the D5 with the sound system using two JBL MR825 mains (15" with adjustable horn attenuation), I was taken aback by the clarity and overall balance for my voice without much tweaking. A bit of rollback on the mids and bass got it dialed in. After hours of comparing, this mic is right there with the e945 with a slightly different sound 'personality' that I like, and is better than the PR22 and the older SM58. The OM7 is still in a sound league of its own (very smooth), but being low impedance, requires a lot more gain than my other mics, sometimes maxing out the gain on my system depending on the venue, in which case I switch to the e945. The OM7 is also hypercardioid which requires me to literally eat the mic, but it's a wonderful mic for many venues. Now i have another excellent mic with the great clarity and sound quality I look for, good SPL, gain, and gain before feedback. This is truly an excellent buy and as I said in the title, an excellent mic that's been flying under the radar and beginning to be noticed for its sound quality and value. ... More

I've used a lot of different mics. SM58s are just too muddy for me. I tried the Sennheiser e835, and it was great with just me, but if someone else had a 58 they had to jack the highs up on the board and it would my the 835 feedback at high frequencies. I switched the OM2, and it was good, but the pickup pattern was a little too loose so and I would get feedback. I switched to the D5 and it sounds great, and the pickup pattern is tight enough to avoid feedback without being so tight that I have to be dead in the same spot to get my voice. There is still no side address on the mic. I am rough on gear. I put this D5 in it's bag with an SM58 as a backup because the SM58 is the "toughest tried and true mic there is." Every time someone would forget their mic I would let them borrow my 58. Twice at a show my 58 would not work. The capsule would have broken loose from the housing and the two wires attached to is would have snapped. This is of course my fault for how I throw the mic back in a case with other stuff then driver all over the place. So now 6 years of using he AKG D5 and it starts rattling. I have no backup because I didn't buy another SM58 last time it broke. The capsule is snapped in half, but the wires are still connected. So today I glued it back together and will use it for the weekend to get up enough money to buy another AKG D5 this weekend. ... More

I am becoming a bit of an AKG snob. I mic my guitar cab with the AKG D40, and now I sing through the D5. These two are direct competitors with the Sure SM57 and 58 respectively. I prefer a certain undefinable 'presence ' in the AKG's. I purchased the D5 specifically to try and solve a particular problem- singing (perhaps too) quietly. Singing louder is the most obvious and cheapest resolution, but that seems to be an unattainable goal for now. The D5 because of its (insert science words here) sturdier, more fixed diaphragm, is supposed to better handle high gain. And the verdict is- it seems to be the better mic for me. I like the frequency response, I like the build, and with the added assistance of an ART Studio V3 preamp, I can now be heard. Two things- I am NOT knocking the 57 or the 58 which are stellar mics for almost any application and I will readily admit that I need to work on mic proximity. Having said that, if you really feel the need to sing but sing too quietly, this may be the mic for you, and if you have a "mic locker" you should probably have one of these anyway. The frequency response between this and the SM58 is noticeably different, and may be just the ticket for your next recording. Hope this helps... ... More

Probably the best mic I have used in over 50 years of performing and I have used Shure, Sennheiser, Carvin, Audio Technica, etc. I have used AKG in the past and would definitely recommend them. The clarity is unsurpassed. The low end is so mellow and the mids and highs really put you out front. This mic can also be used without a wind screen. They take abuse and keep on ticking. Well made and can't beat the design. For the money, can't be topped. No cons here. This is my go to mic because I know it will be my friend. The rest of them came stay in my bag. B&H is the best to do business with. This mic was delivered in less than two days using regular delivery. Unbelievable service. If you want it fast, go B&H. Better hope your order is what you want because it will be at your door before you get off the phone. ... More

I have become convinced that the D5 is superior to the shure sm58 or any other mic in this price range. It cuts through the mix and has more clarity. I am speaking in terms of live performance in pop/rock style of music. I really don't know how it would measure up using it to record but it rocks as a live vocal mic for lead and background vocals. I even prefer it to the sure beta 58 and 87 too. This is the best vocal mic available for live applications in this range.

As a sound man for 20 years, I have heard and used a variety of microphones. The AKG D5 is the clearest vocal mic I've used. The very first time I put up against a Shure SM58, even non-musical people noticed and mentioned the difference. The vocals were crystal clear and I've never had feedback from even novice users. I recommend this mic to everyone I can.

As a reference compared with my enCore 100, is more sensitive about 7 db, wider dynamic range.

This is better than the SHURE SM58 or even the Beta 58 mics I have. Sound is clearer and the pickup pattern is extremely tight which is perfect for me because I don't sing with backups from the same mic.. but what this does is cut down on the feed back big time! I was able to turn the stage monitors up loud without any eq notch filtering! This mic is awesome for bands with a high volume stage monitor environment.

Love! For the price it's great.

This is an incredibly warm mic with great output. Cuts through the mix without sounding harsh or piercing. Beats my SM58s, Sennheiser e935s, or CAD D90s. Great off axis rejection, and plenty of gain before feedback. Best bang for buck in this price range. Get a few for your mic locker. You won't be disappointed.

I use this as part of a home Karaoke system. It is very solid, well made and works well with the preamp that I also purchased from B&H. I can't think of any bad features about it. The preamp must be adjusted to the amp and speakers that attach to it. (I'm using a Bose Wave radio as the amp and speakers, and it works well with the mike and preamp I selected.)

Got about 3 yrs of use mounted on a mic stand for piano player before it started going out. I like the sound better than synhauser and shure when it worked. Did the stand topple, a couple of times... be gentle
