SUPER VALUE CANS

The Superlux HD-681 is a HUGE VALUE in a very big market. I have compared these to many far more expensive headphones that cost many times the price of the HD-681 and these are the real deal. Bass is full, punchy and energetic. Mid range is clear and articulate, especially horns, guitars and vocals. Treble is crisp and clear. Overall good tonal balance across the entire spectrum. They are durable and hold up well under average use. They are not bullet proof or designed to take a beating - but they hold up well under normal use. I mean, after all, whaddaya expect at this price? They are as durable and as comfortable as my 30 year old AKG K-240s which are still going strong. They are very comfortable and have just enough clamping force - slightly more than my K-240s and also more than my far more costly open air Audio-Technica cans. I am confident other users can/will find something to complain about ... forgetting the extremely low cost when comparing them against more expensive competition - and these compete with those higher end cans very well. Others are sure to prefer the bass of Brand X or the treble of Brand Y or the mid range of Brand Z, and surely someone will find fault with the size of the ear cups and / or with their clamping force - but you simply cannot beat the sound of these cans for their low price. Others will compare them to much more expensive products, which merely proves how good they are. Good, solid, balanced sound for a very low cost - a huge value in my opinion. And that is just MY take ... your mileage may differ. I say money well spent. JR ... More

Great entry level cans

I'm a musician, producer, and audio engineer, and there are basically two things I look for in headphones: comfort and flat sound. I first tried these headphones after the death of my Beyerdynamic DT770s, and considering that these are less than half the cost of a set of those, the sound quality is astonishing. Comparing their frequency responses on a graph, these are somewhat comparable to the legendary Sony MDR-7506, but with much more forward, sometimes unpleasant highs. This great sound is possible because of their open back design, and that alone makes them a good buy, but these cans do have some issues. The biggest problem with headphones this cheap is build quality. I'm on my third pair of these in as many years. Both failures were caused by a loose connection that caused one ear to loose sound entirely. My third set has fared better. The outside of the headphones is made of cheap plastic, they can survive a drop or two but don't push your luck. The ear pads are made of a fake leather that goes hard after a short while, and, if you care, they are ugly. On top of that, they do vary a bit from set to set in terms of sound, but none so far have sounded bad, just noticeably different. These problems are minor enough that I have no problem recommending them as entry level good headphones, but I'd suggest spending more on cans if you want them for studio work. That said, I have used them for this and had good results, and there are pricier headphones that sound far worse like Skullcandy, or even some of the lower end Sennheisers. At this price, get these. If you're willing to spend more, get a set of MDR-7506 or DT770s. ... More

I have two sets of these. For me, they are great listening cans. The bass is enhanced just enough to make it punchy without adding any muddiness. While this greatly enhances my listening enjoyment, some people might find it problematic for mixing. As for the rest, they are very clear. One thing they lack is the super-transparent high-frequency response you might get with Sony reference cans. But guess what, I don't need to hear every potential flaw when I am just try to enjoy the sound. I find that if I goose the upper frequencies of my listening source, I can hear all of the symbols, horns, and upper harmonics just fine. Overall, for me, they are perfect for pleasure listening. However, because the response is not perfectly flat some people might have trouble using them to create an accurate mix. For mixing, I use Sony MDR-7509HD. ... More

I have SEVERAL pairs of expensive and mid and lower priced tier headphones. I have way too many. These are some of the best bang for the cost. they have a little more bass, but are not treble boosted to the point of being too bright. I actually like a brighter headphone myself. one other headphone that I think is on par with these is the shp9500. You can't go wrong for the cost.

These headphones sound awesome and I use them with my MacBook pro. They have two minor drawbacks, one possibly is adjustability I haven't fooled with them that much so they may be able to be adjusted as they fit snugly, tight but not too tight and the cord , i wish it where unpluaggable at the headphone side as well as the equipment end because its rather stiff ,definitely not flimsy. If I could give it a 4 1/2 stars I would. Highly recommended

Probably seen the reviews online. One of the best headphones at this price. Very good bass and mid. Treble is a bit sharp. Sounds great for tv and movies. No distortions and everything is clear. Pretty amazing at this price.
