Surprisingly detailed sound for less than 30?

Apr 8, 2015

I had been using Sennheiser HD595 for several years until the headphone cable got caught between the armrest of my chair, which eventually caused it to fall down to its' death. So looking for a replacement headphone with a similar sound clarity but with a far smaller budget in mind... I wasn't very optimistic to say the least. The Superlux HD-681 Evo arrived in a box where the product laid well packed. It includes a 3.5 to 6.3 mm headphone c... Show More

Superlux HD-681 The New industry standard ? could well be ! I have a studio and i am at the moment recording and mixing tracks for a 13 piece funk band, some of their tracks are getting toward 48 tracks!, Now, thats alot of clutter too make sence of. while doing the keyboard tracks, i gave the keyboard player a pair of Bayer DT100, and after a few seconds he took them off and said they sounded "Horrid" he then plugged in a pair he had ... A new standard in affordable mixing and monitoring ? It's looking like it. If you go and check the best selling headphones on here at the moment you will see Superlux HD-681at number 2. And for very good reason..... If you check again at all the prices in the top ten you will also see that they are the cheapest by far, out selling others at 10x the price This has to be telling you something ! What can I say? They're a sub-?30 pair of Superlux headphones. Having tried the old HD-681s which were an amazing pair for the price, I can say that the Evos are that and bucket-loads more! I was pleasantly surprised upon opening the packaging to find two cables; a short one, perfect for use with a portable device and a longer one, perfect for use with, well, anything that's a little further away. Very capable cheap headphones!

Oct 7, 2014

These headphones are absolutely brilliant value for money. The sound is very revealing. Mid bass is somewhat emphasized as with headphones like the ATH-M50, but it's not muddy enough to overwhelm. Excellent positional/directional accuracy and instrument separation. There wasn't a song I listened to that doesn't sound great through these headphones. It's worth remembering that these are not closed headphones, they are semi-open. Sound w... Show More

Great entry level cans

Jun 14, 2017

I'm a musician, producer, and audio engineer, and there are basically two things I look for in headphones: comfort and flat sound. I first tried these headphones after the death of my Beyerdynamic DT770s, and considering that these are less than half the cost of a set of those, the sound quality is astonishing. Comparing their frequency responses on a graph, these are somewhat comparable to the legendary Sony MDR-7506, but with much more forward,... Show More

Incredible bang for the buck

Mar 23, 2018

The Superlux HD-681 was the first over the ear headphone that I bought for music production. I read a lot of positive reviews and decided to give it a try. I wanted a budget headphone quite neutral (allowing to mix at late night) but with a good bass response, since I mainly produce electronic music. I now also have more expensive headphones from Audio Technica and Beyerdynamic. A direct comparison would not make sense, since the price does vary,... Show More

a must for an amateur rocording hobbyist

Jun 6, 2015

Being a living room hobbyist guitar player for a long time, it was about a while to consider headphones purchase for my guitar playing and PC DAW recording needs, since the family started to complain about distorted guitar sounds, interrupting their TV watching entertainment. Not sure about what to choose in the times of DJ music reign, I aimed at the low end of studio headphones, just for a try for a buck. First search engine hit, Superlux HD-68... Show More

I've owned quite a few pairs of Superlux's headphones in the past, from two pairs of the original 681s and two pairs of the Evos. I have a more full review on the white version of these headphones in which I go into greater detail regarding the sound. I will quickly say that the sound from these headphones is leaps and bounds beyond what you would ever expect from something in this price range; not too bright, not too boomy or muddy, plenty ... Excellent sound, very poor build quality.

Oct 11, 2017

I've tried most of the cheap Superlux headphones and in my opinion this is the best sounding one by far. Also the most comfortable ones. I've not been too happy with any of the others, mostly due to harsh sounding highs. These ones though, wow, I'm actually amazed that such great sounding headphones can be made this cheap. They're not flat or precise enough for mixing and being an open model they are obviously not suitable for tracking but s... Show More

SUPER VALUE CANS

Jun 14, 2019

The Superlux HD-681 is a HUGE VALUE in a very big market. I have compared these to many far more expensive headphones that cost many times the price of the HD-681 and these are the real deal. Bass is full, punchy and energetic. Mid range is clear and articulate, especially horns, guitars and vocals. Treble is crisp and clear. Overall good tonal balance across the entire spectrum. They are durable and hold up well under average use. They are not b... Show More

Great budget headphones

May 2, 2015

I purchased these headphones to be a secondary option to my AKG K240 MKII-s when travelling, practicing with headphones in another room and to get multiple ways to listen to my mixes. I was a little skeptical because the price is what you would pay in a electronics store for cheap headphones that always sounded terrible to my ears. Mostly the store bought headphones would sound very bassy and would make music a bit unlistenable. I was v... Show More

Surprisingly good quality for minimal cost

May 16, 2013

I bought this item because it looked comfortable, for long recording sessions. I now have 2 pairs, and bought another for a friend. The headphones are very comfortable, but was surprised that the claimed frequency response appears to be or could well be a fact. I happened to be building a soft synth in Pure Data one evening, and decided to generate some frequencies to find out what I could hear at 59 years of age. I managed to take the frequen... Show More

So i have tested these headphones quite a bit since they came and they sound amazing they maybe lack a little bass but otherwise the mids lows and highs are clear (better then the 681 evo but the 681 evo's lows are a lot more louder and good for all types of music (they don't need equalizing to get more bass) and the 685 is the best of them all everything is loud and crisp high lows and mids... they sound perfect for what i listen to vocals are l... Astonishing value and excellent service from Thomann

This particular model of the 681 series would appear to offer an excellent balance, with a well judged frequency response and good dynamics. I purchased these headphones instead of the similar but much more expensive AKG K-141 and honestly I am impressed by the quality. I would have paid two or three times the price and I would still think they are good value. These are excellent headphones anyway, and for the price they are a crazy bargain. Fantastic sound but weak cable design

Nov 16, 2018

I've had 3 pairs of these headphones, which is a testament to how good these sound and how badly their cable is designed. For the price offered I don't believe you can get a better headphones experience, the sound quality is great, with a warm bass and ever so slightly recessed mids and highs. I've only sensed this sort of clarity and balance in headphones 80 euros and up, which at almost triple the price of these just goes to show how good ... Show More

I did my research before I bought these and I was strongly considering the Evo version instead. In the end I'm glad I made the right choice for me. I was attracted by the ?studio reference? claim of these headphones but was afraid the bass was going to be too anemic for my needs. I've been using Superlux cans for a few years now and it's very hard to fault the sound they deliver, although not as flat as you might want for production work they do offer a great reference point for the low end and very high frequencies.
