Great Image Quality

Jun 8, 2013

I purchased the Sony a77 with this lens kit in FEB of 2013. It's now June and I've shot a considerable amount of stills and video. So far I'm very pleased with the image quality of both the lens and the processing power of the camera. I did send it back initially because I was concerned about a minor give in the lens mount on the camera. Just a little bit of a give when twisting the zoom back and forth where the lens actually shifts slightly. I r... Show More

As Tack sharp as it comes.

Feb 19, 2013

Jusst started using Sony's 16-50mm f/2.8 DT zoom lens and found it to be extremely, extremely tack sharp. Due to the f/2.8 constant aperature the image stays very bright in the already excellent Oled electronic viewfinder of Sony's a77 SLT camera. Had ordered the 18-55mm f/3.5 lens and saw right away it didn't fit my needs. Once I put the 16-50mm lens on and started shooting with it and particularly made some large prints, I'm convinced it's more... Show More

Best wide zoom lens for Sony NEX-FS100

Nov 6, 2011

I'm using the SAL1650 16-50mm f/2.8 on my Sony NEX-FS100 Super35mm video camera with the Sony LA-EA1 adapter. I'm waiting on the LA-EA2 adapter and firmware update to allow autofocus and smooth iris stepping. For this application it is the perfect wide zoom lens, especially for the price. Photographers use autofocus but videographers manually focus, so having a parfocal lens that holds manual focus from telephoto to wide is critically important. T... Show More

The best walk around sony lens.

Jun 8, 2012

Got this lens for my sony a77. I must say i have been overwhelmed by the build quality and the image quality on offer. f2.8 throughout the zoom range makes it a fast lens. This lens is very sharp throughout its range and gives the best results between f4 and f8. SSM motor is silent and makes autofocussing very fast. Image quality can be compared to the more expensive zeiss 16-80mm lens. The a77 corrects the chromatic aberration and vignetting but... Show More

Terrific!

Jan 23, 2012

I wanted to upgrade my A55 Sony. I recently made the jump from Canon to Sony as I like the A55 features, User friendly menus etc. Getting rid of the old Canon lenese and starting to build a new quiver of Sony takes some doing and the 16-50mm f/2.8 is the first move to upgrade my Sony SLT. The lens was easy knowing that is the first of four lenses I wanted for general purpose shooting for this camera. More importantly, the service at B&H is outsta... Show More

Excellent performer

Dec 10, 2011

I've been searching for a wide zoom for my a55 that matches the sharpness of my Tamron 28-75. This is the first one that does the job well. I've tried the Tamron and Sigma 17-50s an neither were near as sharp when cropped 100% (which often happens with a 50mm max focal lens). The Sony 16-50 is incredibly sharp even wide open - as sharp as my 35mm prime. The colors are gorgeous (compared to the Tamron warm cast). Build quality is superb - solid ma... Show More

TOUGH LENS!

Nov 15, 2012

While the optics of this lens are superb, the zoom control ring is not. It is TOUGH to move. I returned the lens to B&H for a replacement as the zoom ring needed some muscle to zoom. B&H sent me a replacement lens which unfortunately has the same problem. I guess Sony has not realized this as yet. It does not effect still photography, but during Video while zooming in or out(especially out)the camera shake simulates an earthquake. The lens mount ... Show More

Best wide zoom lens for Sony NEX-FS100

Nov 6, 2011

This is the best wide zoom lens for the Sony NEX-FS100 because it is parfocal, which means it holds focus from full telephoto to wide.Photographers rely on autofocus but videographers need manual focus so a lens that is parfocal means you can change focal length (zoom out) without refocusing. The Sony LA-EA2 adapter should allow for autofocus but it will require updated firmware to get this feature to work on the FS100 video camera. Best general zoom lens in the world!

Feb 10, 2016

i have owned this lens for almost two years and it practically replaced my go-to prime lens, the sony 35mm f1.8. It is sharp at all focal length, with tiny drop in sharpness at 50mm wide open. At 24mm and 35mm it has maximum sharpness. I do not see a difference in sharpness at 35mm f2.8 compared to the SAL35f1.8. Although the prime lens can go to 1.8, it drops in sharpness, so I only switch when needed. The optimum sharpness is at f4 and you don'... Show More

Good optics, great build.

Mar 26, 2012

I am a long-time Canon shooter who recently received a Sony a65, so I needed a general purpose lens and chose the 16-50 2.8. The first thing I noticed was the build quality - easily Canon L quality. The focus motor is near silent, and it achieves focus very quickly. Image quality certainly did not disappoint, but I was also not blown away either. Bokeh is very pleasing, and sharpness is more than acceptable - with f/2.8 being very usuable. Also c... Show More

One of the best kit lenses on the market

Aug 30, 2013

This is a fantastic lens that fits perfectly with the sony a77 camera body. In terms of build quality, it is heavy, sturdy, fairly impressive given the large diameter. It feels rugged enough not to worry about it getting dirt or water on it. Picture quality is amazing, and when stepped down a few stops from 2.8 it is as sharp as I have ever seen. It also performs really well at 2.8. I actually find that it feels like a G series lens, perhaps it d... Show More

The best all-around lens I've had!

Im a professional photographer and my main photography environments are weddings and models. Before this lens I had the kit 18-70mm Sony lens and I knew I had to get a better lens. I went to my local Sony Store and tried out some lens that would replace this kit lens I had. Out of all the lenses that I tried out, this was the one I fell in love with. This lens is just great. I still can't believe my eyes. I bought an alpha57 with the standard 18-55 lens, and decided (after reading several reviews) I should upgrade to the 16-50 f2.8 one from the a77. Ok, yes, it's big and heavy, and 72mm, but my GOD the sharpness & definition...! Just zoom in and you will find every detail is there. A Must Have Lens !

Jul 10, 2012

The 16-50mm f/2.8 zoom by Sony is the most versatile lens that I've ever owned, and if I was only allowed one lens this would be it. This lens is most often on my camera (the standard for me)and I use it for landscapes, group shots and even some portraits. The contrast, color and sharpness help provide for some excellent photos and I'm never without it. At f/2.8 low light conditions are no problem what-so-ever. I almost never need a flash when shooting indoor public gatherings, and night scenes are a breeze for this amazing hunk of glass. The lens is solid and well constructed.

Perfect for the FS100

Apr 29, 2014

Using this lens with the FS100. When I purchased the FS100, I used a Metabones adapter with my existing EOS 5D lenses, but I wanted a flexible lens with the autofocus feature. I first gor the Sony NEX Mount Adaptor since I knew some new Sony lens were coming out. After many months of searching, I opted for this lens as the best choice and for the price, it turns out that this was a totally great choice. I did not have the opportunity to use it a lot yet but the shot made with it so far were really nice.

great, fast lens

Jan 9, 2012

the perfect range for me, this lens is well made, solid, a bit heavy, but really delivers the goods. sharp corner to corner, great color and contrast at a fast 2.8 across the range, though maybe a tad softer at the long end. i would have expected it to be more expensive for the quality of build and image, but i'm not complaining! compared to a za 24 f2.0 on a a65, and this zoom was as good in resolution, a bit better for focus speed and accuracy. a great lens and bargain.

Works as advertised

Feb 20, 2012

I use this lens on my Alpha 33 camera in place of the standard zoom lens that came with it. This new lens allows me to shoot in much lower light without using a flash. It auto-focuses very fast and does it quietly. The lens is a little heavy but I'll just need to get used to that. I like the sharpness. I appreciate that it included a 'tulip' lens shade to help keep the glare out and to protect the lens. I received the lens in good condition and very quickly from B&H.

Terrific kit lens!

Dec 14, 2016

This is quite possibly the best 'kit' lens I've ever used! Great for long exposurelandscapes and sharp enough for wide aperture portraits. It has a decent bokeh and isrelatively quick focusing in both manual and auto-focus. It's built pretty solid too. About a week ago I went face down after slipping on ice. I landed square on the lens. Though I'm a bit bruised up, all elements are in tact and the lens, and camera, remain functioning.

great for sony alpha dlst

great lens with pretty acurate autofocus for video. I would say the focal length range is pretty good on an crop sensor. I also have a 28-70 and i do occasionlly find myself wanting more in the frame. I believe this only works with aps-c cameras so you couldn't use the full frame on a full frame camera. I bought this mainly for video use and because of its completely quiet (it is quiet) autofocus which is pretty fast and accurate.

Beautiful Execution

Dec 11, 2013

This lens shows off the reason I bought a DSLR. The sharpness and brighness of the images are amazing. The bokeh is superb, and I find myself manually setting the aperture to f2.8, and I have not seen any drop in sharpness. This is a sturdy lens with a good amount of heft, so i'm not so worried about light knocks when using my sling strap. This lens stays on my camera 90% of the time.

Excellent lens

Apr 3, 2016

I purchased this lens for an A77 mk1. I have been a hobby photographer for 40+ years and, having been raised on primes, I dislike zooms with intensity. I saw the light, no pun intended, with this lens. I am very pleased with the photographs I have made with it, they are sharp as can be, the color is great, and the build quality is, in my opinion, quite good. Highly recommended.

Great lens from Sony

Jan 17, 2012

Replaced my Tamron 17-50/2.8 on my new Sony A77. Have to say that at F4 is too sharp :) The loudest noise when taking a picture with flash is the flash discharge :)! You almost couldn't hear this lens focusing system (SSM is another way another thing from SAM!) Zoom ring is a little hard to turn but I expect this is from being new. Recommended.

Good lens

Dec 11, 2011

Good lens from Sony, one that is not converted directly from Minolta. It was designed for the A77 and when coupled with the camera it shows. Slient and quick SSM focusing is excellent when shooting videos and action at a high fps rate. f/2.8 throughout the zoom range gives beautiful bokeh. Very good walk around and portrait/wedding lens.
