As an avid user of the Beta 57, I have high expectations when it comes to dynamic mics. I expect a monster with the ability to handle high SPL's, expensive amps, and shredding guitars. This mic delivered it in spades. I once saw Dave Mustaine and Marty Friedman using Sennheiser MD-421's. I got to try one at a real studio once. As a brand new insurance salesman, I couldn't afford one. I thought I would try the E906. It worked. It sounds defined, balanced, and chunky. This would sound great for horns, snares, guitar, bass, etc. It handles Earth-shatteringly loud guitar amplifiers. The ability to mic an amp without a stand is a plus too for my tiny small town dives. I would buy this mic again in a heartbeat. do the same. :) ... More

The e906 put my SM57 out of business!

I've always used SM57s on my guitar cabs when playing live, and in conjunction with other mics in the studio. It always sounded great, so I felt no need to look elsewhere. But, after hearing the e906 in action a few times, I decided to try one for myself. I'm glad I did. The e906 is proudly labeled "Made in Germany," and comes with your standard-issue accessories: a mounting clip, zippered carry bag, and the documentation and user's manual. The build quality appears to be excellent, though not quite in the SM57 built-like-a-tank category. Sennheiser provides a 10 year factory warranty. With the presence filter switch set to the brightest position, it's a bit more vibrant and harmonically textured than the SM57. Fast, detailed, transparent, airy, open and articulate. The SM57 is punchier, gutsier, rawer, and more forwardly aggressive sounding in the highs and upper mids. Both have warm, natural lower mids and tight lows. With the presence switch in the mid position, the e906 sounds kinda like a SM57 and SM7B had a love child together, but with the overall "Sennheiser house sound" shared by the e835 and MD421. It sheds a little of the exaggerated high frequency bite and becomes smoother, fuller and flatter, with virtually zero EQ needed when chicken pickin a Tele through my Dr. Z Stangray. Finally, with the presence switch in the cut position, the sound becomes more warm and silky; with just a hint of the ribbon mic vibe or that warm, smooth EV RE20 thang in the lower mids. We also tested the e906 on acoustic guitar, mandolin, snare and even a Hammond organ through a Leslie 122. It sounded superb on each source, much better than a $200 dynamic mic should sound. Its sonic performance and amazing versatility are definitely impressive, and it's become my new standard. Some may still prefer the SM57 sound, because its edge and aggressiveness may suit their preferences better. It's all about what YOUR ears like, but mine definitely fell in love with the e906. ... We bought this mic after months of camping many mics and prices. For the price this is a great mic. If you can find a nice used one you cant go wrong for under a bill. When we used this to record our distorted guitars thru a mesa 4x12 we used it on the top setting for the EQ on the mic. With the fast attack on this mic we decided to try it out on some 14 inch toms and put it on the bottom EQ setting and I was very impressed of the great sound it reproduced in the recordings! This thing was a money saver when it came to buying this or an MD421. I dont know how much better or equal the 421 would be but this E906 did just what we hoped for. ... More

Use ONLY for recording guitar amp. It is clear and balanced, has a switch to contour the high frequencies 3 positions , I usually leave in center . The hang over lay on grill placement method is definitely a great attribute. I sometimes go stereo with two amps, the 906 on one amp and a 57 on the other. I have used a shure 57 for more than 25 years along with ribbon mics for recording amps , the 906 is a fresh sound to the palette. really good on clean sounds , but also very articulate on the crunch/distortion tones. Have only used on 6L6 type amps at the moment. The only short coming ( if you could call it that ) is it is a natural sound not punchy like the senn 421 or shure 57. I think its good to have a few different mics to record amps. ... More

this is a good mic as you would expect from sennheiser. it is more well defined than the e609 and has 3 different changeable patterns for smooth, bright, and normal. those settings come in handy for mic placement which is crucial for capturing the tone you want from your amplifier. the noise rejection from the backside of the mic is execellent even if you're a loud picker like i am and you're recording within 8 ft of the mic! lol the super cardiod patter and frequency response is good for guitar and bass amps alike. the range thats is affected is between 2-8khz to capture the fast attack of guitar or bass. i recomend this mic to anyone who wants a mic specifically for guitar and bass amps. ... It’s a great dynamic mic overall - and - probably like you, I have all the SM57s, SM545s, Royer 121s, and various condensers covered. I was looking for a new voice and this did not disappoint.

I still prefer my m88 on guitar, but what i love is to be able to just keep it on my amp all the time, when i want to record it's there... and no mic stand taking up space in my bedroom... sound wise, it's nice, a little more flat eq than a 57 maybe, not a lot of 'air' but it gets the job done nicely without any hassle at all, I also got one that is basically new but sold as new for $100, which is not much of an investment ... Mic sounds great on guitar cab. The 3-way presence boost/cut is gives a variety of sounds. The design could be better. First, the presence switch is really recessed. I guess the idea is so that you don't accidentally switch it under normal handling of the mic, but you almost need a small screwdriver move it. Second, the mic clip is extremely tight. At first I thought it shipped with the clip for the wrong mic, but after screwing around for a few minutes, finally figured you really do just need to force it in. ... More

I bought to of these to run as a stereo pair for guitar amplifiers in a live environment. They are terrific! They handle whatever two 100 watt amps can throw at them and do not color the sound in any sort of negative manner. They definitely let the amps tone shine right through. I went from two classic Sm57s to these and I just notice more clarity and detail than I did with the 57s. Mic placement is a breeze. I spent all of 5 minutes with a pre-recorded loop figuring out the most natural sound and its very easy to find the large sweetspot with these mics. Again, the 57 does not have a huge sweet spot. ... I don't write reviews usually( I think this is my second one ever), but I want to pass on that it's a wonderful sounding piece of equipment and if you're picky about your guitar tone, like I am, it's a great microphone and worth the purchase!! I haven't heard another microphone that sounds this good in this price range either.

I've only been using it for a couple weeks. Seems more clear in the upper ends than a 57 and the boost is helpful at times. I've enjoyed combining it with other mics while recording. It is crisp. I also think is should be mentioned that the form factor alone is a bonus for this mic. It's nice being able to hang over a guitar cab in a pinch. I haven't used it live yet, but seems like an ideal gigging mic. This is a great addition to a mic collection.

While there are others that could claim the same thing, these Sennheisers are pretty much industry standards for mic'ing guitar cabs. Excellent mic for live shows and beginner home-studio recording. Works great on its own but opens up other opportunities while mixed in with an SM57. Although a great 'partner in crime' to the SM57, I have found that this mic is much more musically applicable and natural sounding to an SM57, and serves as a great paring to one another or as an upgrade.

This mic does a lot of what the venerable SM57 does plus has a little more body to it. As an alternative to the standard this is a good 'other flavor' and you can get good results using the e906 AND the 57 or e906 and a ribbon mic . In addition to its main job as a guitar cab mic, it was surprisingly decent on acoustic guitar as well (it's not known for that) catching enough character and strum transients to add something to the mix.

It is also more forgiving and easier to set up, just hang it over the front of the amp, suspended from the handle of the amp.
