JVC HA-RX700 Around-Ear Stereo Headphones Review

JVC HA-RX700 Around-Ear Stereo Headphones

Aug 28, 2013

Reviewed by Seth Meyers on B&H Photo Video

The other day, the headphones I'd bought last fall finally died. I guess that's what happens when you purchase the cheapest headphones you can find. It wasn't too surprising. So I pulled up B&H photo/video and checked to see if they had a certain set from JVC that I was really interested in. Ten minutes later, I'd clicked order, and six days later, they arrived at my doorstep. Isn't the internet wonderful? According to most of the reviews I've seen of the HARX700's, they're the best quality headphone on the market for their price bracket. And I'd have to agree on that one. First impressions: The build quality on these seems very solid at this point. There are no creaky or loose parts. Everything fits together well, and the headphones have some heft to them. They're not heavy by any means, but definitely not feather-light either. The non-removeable cable is ten feet long. TEN FEET! That's pretty long. It's also decently thick and should withstand everyday use with no problems. The connector is a standard 3.5mm plug, with an included 1/4 inch gold plated adapter for use with mixers, etc. I am a sound technician for a band and I have used these at a concert. They were great for this application, as I could hear all the individual tracks clearly and isolate any problems as I mixed. The sound at first was very harsh. The bass was there, but it was overshadowed by the extravagant highs and mids. The highs were way too shimmering and really made it painful to listen to at high volume levels. After a 40 hour burn-in: Wow! What a world of difference. To burn them in, I just queued up the band Red's entire collection and put it on a loop at just above a comfortable volume level. I let this play for 40 hours, and afterwards they were like a whole new pair of headphones. The highs have receded to comfortable, crisp levels, and the mids are much more refined and accurate. The bass is tight and responsive, but it could be more prevalent. They are rated for 8hz to 25khz, which expands well beyond the normal range of human hearing. This makes for a great experience watching movie trailers; you'll really feel the thunder and explosions. Songs: These sound great with a variety of music. Rock is explosive yet balanced, EDM such as Deadmau5 has plenty of punch in the kicks and a lot of definition in the synth lines. Daft Punk's track Contact is spectacular on the HARX700's. Overall: Honestly, I tried to think of more negative points, but I can't. These are a really solid pair of headphones that deliver great sound for a reasonable price. ... More

I had this product delivered to me overseas, reason why I'm writing this review a little late. After reading a lot of expert reviews, I was convinced to pick these budget-audiophile headphones among others. First off, all of what were reviewed were correct. At first, the mids and highs are a little too apparent, could be a little harsh as experts would put it. I'm not an expert but listening closely has revealed this to be true. Another accurate observation is the bass. The bass in these headphones are of pinpoint accuracy! I read comments like the bass is like a guided bomb. I couldn't agree more. This is especially apparent in types of music were bass are a little obvious, like funk or acid jazz. Next is the size and form factor. These are really large. I wouldn't say huge as I have seen bigger ones, like AKG K550s. These are pretty well built, the type that will last years through normal wear and tear. There is a minimal creak when you move your head too much but I don't find this as too distracting. If the music is in a decent volume (decent, not loud), you won't even notice this. A part of the right ear pads are a little thin. These minor cons made me rate 4 stars, but definitely not the sound! Finally, let's go to the sound. The frequency range does not disappoint! I had another budget-audiophile headphones, the AKG K511. Those have a full and deep sound for the price range but doesn't reveal much of instrumental-savvy music. They even sound veiled at times. Now I'm hearing instruments I don't even notice before! So that's a plus. I'm still in the process of taming these beasts but I'm really satisfied so far. With a little more burn in, maybe a week or two of successive long listening, their true and better colors would come out. No need to think twice. These are the best ones in their price range! ... I purchased the HA-RX700 for my ham radio station, but ended up using them with my stereo on a regular basis. Very comfortable, extremely durable, and attractive - with an excellent, well-balanced sound signature. Bass is solid and punchy, without booming or overwhelming higher frequencies. Mid-range is all present and accounted for, it's all there. Treble sounds are clear and crisp, with no harsh sibilance. I play acoustic guitar, and electric guitar and bass - so I want my record collection to sound realistic. Guitars voices sound right. Cymbals sizzle and triangles ping as they should. Bass lines sound right - deep, full, but not booming or thick. These are well made, durable, and good sounding cans that compare favorably with other models costing much more. While they do not sound exactly the same, I consider them serious competition for my AudioTechnica ATH-M50, and similarly priced cans from AKG, Sennheiser, and Shure. YOU might prefer one of these other products, but you won't get anything sounding this good from those companies for the price of these cans. At least, that is just MY take . . . your mileage may vary. Good luck with YOUR buying decision. I am pleased with this transaction. Oh... almost forgot to mention B&H shipped them quickly and safely in practically no time. Count me a happy camper. JHR ... More

They are comfortable for a little while but if time is extended, as for watching a ~ two hour video, I feel that they get heavy and hot. Not heavy like Koss Pro-4AA, in the old days, but heavier than I want. These are 'sit-up' 'phones and not for laying in bed unless of course one is sitting up. The good news there is that falling asleep while wearing them is unlikely. There is no Noise-Canceling feature as some have claimed(not B&H however). There is noise muffling but I can hear outside noises just fine. If anyone says there is a Noise-Canceling feature they are lying. Sound is OK. Not stellar but did not really expect that at this price. Plenty good enough for watching movies! If they had a mic with them they would be great for VOIP ...but they don't. I've had mine for two(2) years and they still work. No part of them is worn out due to usage, but, OTOH, they are not used much because they become uncomfortable to me after wearing for an hour or so. I really liked that a 6.3mm plug adapter was included. Smart and very nice touch by JVC. I would not buy again. However, that will not keep me from buying at B&H or considering more JVC products. I'm a big guy(6', 252 ...) and think these would be better for someone with smaller features(ears). ... More

Well made. Durable. Attractive. Solid feel. Excellent balanced audio reproduction from base to mid to treble - it is all there. Super value for the money. These cans sound as good as other models costing 3x as much, and I have good cans made by AKG, AudioTechnica (BPHS-1, ATH-AD700x, ATH-M50) and several other higher end headphones. I also have the JVC HA-RX900 model, which is also an excellent product for its price tag - but this model is by far the value leader with essentially the same construction, nearly identical sound signature, and much lower cost. Really.

For the money, these little wonders are as good as it gets. Clean mids and highs, great soundstage, and visceral bass Pros: -Sound incredible for the money; can compete with many much higher-priced phones, especially of the boutique variety (Bose, Skullcandy, etc) -Comfortable for long stretches -Don't require a dedicated amplifier (but can still benefit from one) -Simple, functional, and durable design Cons: -Pleather earcups get quite hot; not unique to these but rather a characteristic of all closed and semi-closed headphones with pleather cups Other thoughts: -Quite large. These compete with the Everglide S500's for being the biggest cans I own -These aren't true closed phones. As such, they do not provide the isolation you may expect Final thought: -If you only have $40 to spend on full-size headphones, there is simply no point in looking any further. I'm so impressed with them, I'm going to order the HARX 900's next, cause reviews say they're even better, but more money, no problem... When you think of High Fidelity , JVC doesn't exactly, come to mind to me, but they got it right on this series.. Well done JVC and B and H, for low price. Yea, they are BIG, so mostly home use, especially with a hard wired 8 ft cable, which you'd have bundle up, for portable use, but well worth it, for sound and price..I consider myself a low budget, High End Audio guy, and have a lot more expensive headphones, and the great reviews for these, are spot on..Get the 700's or 900's you won't be disappointed, especially considering price on them, a great value, for sure.... ... The best deal I could find online! I expected them to be medium sized headphones, but they are HUGE!! The cord is super long as well, which is good for working in the studio! 5 stars because its probably the best headphones i've had in about 4 years, and very comfortable to wear. The only issue is that I don't feel comfortable wearing these in public because they are Godzilla sized and I could get robbed. Great price anyways! And good deal as far as the warranty goes.

I'm no audiophile, and considering that I just listen to music from the computer and iPhone, there's a limit to what these devices can drive in terms of headphones... I think these cover most bases very very well at this price point. There is enough clarity in the highs, the mid tones are clean and the base ins't too boomy. I would consider them to be on the more neutral side compared to what's trendy in consumer oriented headphones, and certainly more clear and crisp in the mids and highs. Excellent value. They don't creak, they are comfortable, not too heavy and they sound great for most music. ... More

I've only put a few hours on these so far, but have been pleased. Audiophile forums indicate that it should take a few hundred hours to completely burn in. The bass is not overpowering, but is pleasant and warm. Mids are crisp and highs are attenuated enough to not be distracting. So far, I've only been listening to MF DOOM, The Cinematic Orchestra, and other overproduced music to test them with the most complex sound in my library. Fit is a little tight. I've read that these can be disassembled and the metal struts can be bent out slightly, but I've not attempted it. ... More

For this price($$?), I would rated it the best sounding headphone in the market, not as good as my AKG 701 but close enough. 50 mm driver, nice warm sound with great bass, may need more high I ma not sure that will be better or worse. However it is too tight for me, and I give it to my 13 daughter, she loves, for $$you can not lose for its sound quality only, everything else is free.

I have not yet tried my stereo yet, I expect I will get even better sound there since there is nothing special about my computer's sound capability. I have not had any problem with them feeling too warm as some have suggested. I can't think of any complaints. They are bulky, but that is to be expected with this type of headphone.

One star off for the black vinyl coating that JVC uses on the ear pads. This stuff always wears off (and leaves black specks on your ears.)
