What can I say.. first mic to meet the tough THX (Lucasfilms) standard.. 20-20k flat freq response, uses inexpensive USB cable. No buzz, very clear audio. Sensitive, good all around pickup, very flexible, does the work of about $600 worth of different mics. Built-in phantom 48v power for condensor mic capsules. Can use for skype or other voicechat progs, (a bit expensive for that purpose, however!) Built-in soundcard with zero latency headphone monitor port (1/8" jack). I intend to also use it to audition for voice-over acting jobs. Thanks, Blue (and Guitar Center!) Dislikes? A bit heavy, 4 pounds with stand, 1.5 without. BIG! Don't expect much portability. I hate wearing headsets, so I keep trying to believe there is such a thing as a good desktop mic that I can use while gaming. Let's just say I'm familiar with the push-to-talk button. This one sounded promising but it is just too sensitive for my intentions. I have it on cardioid mode with the gain turned all the way down. I have tried it beside my keyboard/mouse and in front of them. The best I can do is turn the mic volume down and keep it right in front of me. I hope moving my computer under the desk will stop or at least lessen the fan sounds. I believe this mic is really just meant to be used in a quiet isolated recording environment. If you, like me, are just looking for a desktop mic and your environment will have ANY sounds (clicks, button presses, fans, etc.); this may not be a good choice of microphone. As a desktop mic, it is definitely an improvement over the cheap Logitech one I was using; It's nice to hear some bass/warmth in my voice. The microphone stops working frequently. I don't know if this is a problem with Skype, the USB cable, or the USB hub I have it connected to. I am looking into this issue. Just thought I should mention it as it happens very frequently. Just received the microphone two weeks ago. Plan to use for direct recordings into PC/ Mac. One of the few truly multi-function microphones available on the market that would provide decent recordings directly onto the PC/Mac. 1. What I like about the Yeti A very sturdy microphone, with well thought-out functions. Build is metal solid; quite heavy and has a stable metal base. The dials are however made of plastic, which I thought could have been changed to give a much more solid feel overall. Depending on how often you turn the dials, knobs and use the button, this may not be such a big issue. Function-wise, this must be one of the few microphones with so many different features. It comes with four different modes: stereo, cardiod, omni-directional, and bi-directional patterns which actually works quite well. The recording quality is good, although there seems to be some noise when the gain is set higher than minimum. This is probably because the microphones inside are sensitive, and will pick up some of the ambient noise. There is a gain dial which can be easily adjusted to increase or decrease the actual gain. However, I find setting the gain to minimum seems to give strong results, but guess this is something that might be a question of preference. I like the way the mute button is placed, which makes it easy to mute and un-mute the microphone. There is also an audio headphone output located at the bottom of the microphone which allows easy monitoring of recording. What is also nice is a conveniently located audio out volume dial which allows simple adjustment of the audio out headphone volume. The sound quality is very good for its price. I notice that the microphone has been THX certified; but that's just an endorsement. With or without the certification, this is a good class microphone, and one of the best you can find for direct use with your computers via USB. 2. Things I don't like about the Yeti The main dislike I have is the location of the USB port. The USB cable can get in the way when you try moving the microphone up and down. My USB cable head actually got twisted. I will have to remind myself to unplug the USB cable if it will get caught with the stand when I need to move the microphone. That's not very convenient. The only other thing is its size. This microphone is not so micro; it is BIG, and quite heavy. But depending on your preference, this may not be a concern. It can easily be unmounted from the built-in stand and mounted on a microphone stand if needed. Overall, for its price, this is a great purchase. There is no compromise on sound quality. Recording quality is very strong. To do all the things that this microphone can do, you will have to pay much more and have different microphones for those special needs. I specifically bought this mic for podcasting/Spoken Word. So far, I have recorded several episodes with it and it is very good, especially considering the price is on the low end for what I would have expected for spoken word sound quality. Doesn't even really need a pop filter unless you are egregious with your Aspirated Plosives and Dentals. Requires minimal fidgeting to get a decent sound, and not much more to get amazing sound out of it. However, you definitely have to fidget with it first and figure out how it will best capture your voice. The included guidebook is pretty decent at helping you do this if you're an amateur, esp. w. the Rec. Patterns. As for music, I have tried a few times to get it to capture both singing and instrumental, and it is only OK at that. I have had better musical recordings from cheaper microphones. If you have better soundproofing on your walls than I do, then you will probably get less echo than I did, because it is very sensitive to that. It is better than the standard mics on your laptops for sure, but if you are mainly getting this thing as an investment for music, I'd suggest you explore other options for the price-point. If you mainly do spoken word and occasionally want to record music, then this thing is certainly not going to let you down. Just remember to readjust the settings. It has a screw thread on the bottom for mounting to a stand, and it comes on its own tabletop stand that is just OK, but it will pick up every single light brush on the desk it is on, so plan on getting a better isolation system. The stand is also very heavy, so packing the whole thing can be a pain if you're mobile, but it is fairly small and compacts nicely despite the weight. The microphone itself is plug-and-play (At least on my Mac) but I have not used the included software because I already had my own. I LOVE the headphone jack on the bottom for the monitor, but having the volume knob on the unit can be a pain to adjust while recording. ... More

I decided to purchase a Blue Yeti Pro mic as I was making a music video for a school project and needed a relatively easy to use mic to record decent quality recordings. I decided to go with the Blue Yeti Pro from all the positive reviews given on it so far. It was recommended that I buy the Pro version of this mic over the normal one as there is a difference in sample rates. Basically, this mic is considered better for recording acoustic instruments. The Blue Yeti Pro is VERY easy to use. Plug it in and off you go! For a usb microphone the sensitivity in which it picks up noises is also really good. Every time I take in a breath, the Blue Yeti Pro records me doing it! A little embarrassing, but goes to show the great recording capabilities of this mic. The build quality of this mic is exceptional and is securely packaged in the box. I even had a little bit of trouble better the mic out of the moulded Styrofoam! Having the four recording settings is really handy and Blue makes sure you know which one is which with a well written concise manual talking about the settings. The only possible downside of this microphone is the issue of the low gain settings that many buyers may complain about. However, on the mac it is an easy fix. All you have to do is to click 'go' in the toolbar at the top of the screen, click on 'utilities' and find a application called 'Audio MIDI Setup'. Make sure the mic is connected to the mac before opening it up. Click on 'BLUE USB Audio 2.0' and turn the input and output settings up to the very right so that the values should be at 1. With that adjustment, the microphone should have more gain, so you don't have to turn the gain knob up all the way in a desperate bid for more gain. The Blue Yeti Pro is also a fairly bulky, heavy mic. But since I don't move it around much, for me at least, this is not an issue. ... More
A great all around usb microphone

I purchased this usb microphone to avoid buying a audio interface, phantom condenser mic and preamp for music production in a PC using Cubase 5 and Reason. I have use it to record vocals and a guitar. The setup was pretty easy, just plug and play. The zero latency worked really well in cubase with a realtek hd integrated card in a 680i motherboad and ASIO4ALL drivers. The disadvantage I see in this mic is the sample rate of the recording, up to 48,000khz (cd quality) but would have really liked the recording to be at least 96000khz to be in par with my instruments (midi setup). The microphone sensitivity (gain) can be adjusted on the fly with a physical bottom as well as the volume, no need for software tweaking. This mic can catch all sound (I can hear the conversation of my neighbors with this mic) but was designed to suppress up to 45db of ambient noise, unfortunately the noise of my desktop is closed to 70db (3 noisy fans on a tower pc) so no matter how adjustable the gain is, there will be always a humming. With my laptop xps m1330 the situation is different, the sound is clear and really nice. To be fair this will happen with any mic if you have a noisy enviroment. The mic is a sound card which enables you to route all your sound thru the headphone jack (which can be used as zero latency monitoring). This is a nice feature and although I had a 12 ms latency reported in Cubase, with the headphone plug I dont hear a latency with my songs and vocal (I am a pianist and composer). Ok so I was invited to do a podcast with my associate for our website DroneVibes.com and I needed a good mic. He recommended the Blue Yeti USB Microphone to me. Not taking his advice solely at face value without a little research first to see if I could maybe get something better I started reading all the reviews on the Yeti microphones and others. All roads seemed to lead here to the Yeti mic though with so many positive reviews. I did some more research on Blue's website and around the web. After hours of research it came down to exactly what he recommended which is this microphone! I could have saved hours of time just listening to him but what fun would that be. The chase is half the fun after all, right? So I am using this microphone for podcasting as well as phone calls over the PC. The quality is great. The mic is sensitive enough to pickup the smallest of sounds so make sure you have a quiet environment depending on what your use case is of course. I am using an Auphonix Pop filter with the mic which seems to work well. Other than that it is stock setup. The setup and use is a piece of cake. Plug into the USB and off you go. For those who have no idea about this mic you have just a few things you can interact with. 1) Adjustment of the mic angle. 2) Mute button 3) Directional sensitivity settings 4) Volume knob 5) There is an output for a headset where you can monitor the audio. You can also use this to listen to music or any other sound off your PC (I listen to music via some Audio Technica headphones hooked up to the Yeti Mic That's about it. I'm a longtime pro sound guy, and a musician songwriter. Pros - the mic is quality, low cost, sounds great, fat and present, and it has 4 patterns so it's versatile. Cons - it's usb only and 16 bit only. Blue also makes a Yeti version that is 24 bit with an XLR regular mic connector it's about $199 by itself. The mic is good enough I would consider that a good deal. That's a very good price for a mic of this quality - and I say that having a bunch of mics with German names too. It is important on a Mac to go into the audio/midi settings, find the Yeti settings and where it says "dB" enter 0. Otherwise it may default to the settings of a Mac's built in mic which are often +18 or +20, far too hot for this mic. You plug headphones into the bottom of the mic, and there is a volume control in the front. The stand is removable and there's a mic mount underneath so you can put it on a stand. It only needs 5v to run this usb mic. I have plugged it into my iPhone with a "camera kit" adapter and used it to record. Works just fine, sounds very impressive, I love it close up. Love it direct into the computer it's so simple, use it in stereo to record acoustic guitar or an ensemble. Cardiod for vocals... Great. I haven't used the free software as I have a couple versions of Cubase and Pro Tools. ... More

I purchased Blue Microphones Yeti Pro after spending several days researching USB microphones. Its main purpose for our studio is to record video tutorials, SKYPE, and the occasional studio recording. After unboxing the mic we were impressed with the build quality and styling. The disappointment came when we plugged the mic into the year-old iMac running OSX 10.7.3. We followed Blue's instruction booklet to the letter and were alarmed when the audio recording was extremely quiet. After over an hour of testing at various gain levels and OSX audio settings, we could not resolve the issue. We've also tested this on two other Mac Pros and experienced the same gain problem and they are running 10.6.8. After a little online research I discovered many other people who have experienced this problem as well. It seems that it's not simply a Mac problem. Several Windows users have experienced similar problems. I sent a tech support request to Blue Microphones and several days later received a response stating the following... We have had issues with the Yeti Pro's gain in the past, but our engineering department has recently found a solution to fix the Yeti Pro mics already sold. This requires the return of your unit & is covered under the warranty. Today I received a brand new replacement unit from them and after several hours of testing we're experiencing the exact same gain issue we had previously experienced. Don't buy this microphone if you intend to use it as a USB microphone. More than likely it won't perform as well as it should. My experience with Blue Microphones has been extremely frustrating and has left me with absolute resolve never to buy one of their products again. The Blue Yeti has one purpose: to give you a desktop-sitting microphone with good quality sound, without the need of any other audio interfaces and stuff. I originally bought this mic to be used for commentaries for YouTube videos. I am now getting really into music production, and am so disappointed that I bought this mic. I can't really use this for any music stuff, cause it is made to sit on a table, not really on a stand or anything else. And because I can't use it with any other equipment, such as preamps or effect amps or even a simple audio interface. If you want this mic I would strongly recommend the Yeti Pro. It's a little more expensive but is basically the Blue Yeti, but with the option to use with other equipment, such as audio interfaces. Bottom line: if you want ONLY a USB microphone, to do nothing other than podcasts, interviews, commentaries, then this is fine. If you are buying this for actual music producing and recording and all that, get a real condenser microphone with an XLR output or some other output, NOT USB! ... More

I use this microphone for podcasting, as well as recording narration (and even the occasional line of ADR). I still can't believe how good it sounds - especially the omni-directional mode, which we use for podcasting. I don't understand how it manages to capture such clear sound despite some people being across the room. My only complaint is that the stereo XLR breakout cable is WAY too short, essentially requiring the use of an additional XLR cable. This is a perfect mic for newbies, and anyone with a DIY home studio.

I used the Yeti originally for a group project reading a script followed by being an alternate microphone for filming scenes on a green screen for a short film. It excelled at picking up everyone's voice with ridiculous clarity by simply being set on a coffee table in a living room. It performed very well for giving us a superior audio feed while filming on a somewhat slim budget. Now that the project is over with, I use the Yeti in place of my old gaming headset for Ventrilo while playing Starcraft 2 and FFXI. People say I sound completely different; they say I actually sound like myself. It's great! You can hear it put to use Aside from great clarity, what really makes the Yeti nice for its price is the on-mic options. You can change between 4 modes (Stereo, bi-directional, omni-directional, and frontal) and all pick up exactly as you would expect. You can also change the gain on the fly without touching any software to get clarity up close or far away if necessary. It is big and heavy, don't underestimate it. But after having it for a few weeks I kind of like that. In fact, its size and weight help make it sturdy enough that I don't even consider it a con. It does fold up, and can be transported pretty easily for its size. All in all, this thing is great! I bought this microphone about a week or so ago with the intent of using it to make YouTube videos, as I had heard many good things about it and had seen several YouTubers using it.Let me tell you: there is a reason.For only about a $ dollars, this microphone packs a LOT of good quality.My favorite part is how Blue desings their microphones to NOT need pop filters, and that can be seen plainly when you use it; with a wide variety of settings, you can find what's just right for you and whatever you're doing.I DID buy my own pop filter eventually, but that was only because I wanted even higher quality than I was already getting, but I'm a bit of a perfectionist, so Audcaity's Noise Removal option should be anough for most people.I actually expected it to be smaller and less solid-feeling when I opened it, but dear heavens is this not the case; the thing is SOLID, but not heavy, by any means.I honestly have no real complaints; I suppose the knobs for the aforementioned settings and the volume MIGHT Feel a bit cheap to some people, but I personally have no issues.I suppose it's also worth mentioning that, as is the case with many other micriphones I looked at, the Blue Yeti does not come with its own drivers of software. I use the Yeti for screencast voiceover work, and it rocks. It is the quietest USB mic I have tested, and the tone and clarity of the recordings that it produces are amazing. At first, I thought that I didn't like the loosness of the volume and gain knobs, but it actually makes sense that they have some play to reduce finger noise when adjusting on the fly. The mic, while big (very big and heavy, but not too heavy without the desktop stand attached), fits nicely into my Rode SM2 Shockmount. It won't go all of the way in, but I wouldn't want it to as that would obscure the knobs. I just curl the USB cord underneath it and set it in there and it works out well. Is this a stage-ready solution? No, because the Yeti is not actually attached to the mount, but it's perfect for stationary desktop boom-arm applications. All in all, I'd say BUY THIS MIC !!! I bought this specific kit as a gift, but have used other versions of these products before at length (which is why I bought them as a gift!) The mic is wonderful for recording spoken word - not as sure about recording music yet, although I haven't heard otherwise from the recipient. You can fiddle with the settings, but overall, I don't think any other usb mics have come close in sounding quite so warm and clear (to me - personal preference). In terms of build quality - the mic is rock solid EXCEPT for the usb port in the bottom to connect to your computer - if you are not very careful and gentle when pulling out the cord, over time it will come loose and stop working - or at least mine did. Blue Customer Service many years ago sent me a replacement when that happened, but since they are owned by Logitech now, I am not sure that they would be so gracious (based on my experience with them...). The replacement unit I got didn't have the same issue, so it might have just been a dud. Additionally, although the base is very well made and very stylish (haha), it picks up your computer humming if placed on the same desk. Might be better to get an arm to mount it on instead, which is what I ended up doing. The headphones are comfortable and sound great. I am not an audiophile so I'm afraid I can't comment much else about it otherwise. :) ... More

Wow, there is little this mic can't do. It integrates easily with most any operating system -- no drivers are needed, which is great. The quality is top-notch, on part with mics costing many times what this retails for. It has three capsules, which allow for four different modes, including a stereo option - it is very unusual to find a stereo recording option in a single mic, and while the stereo is not pure in the sense that it is being recorded all at one point in space, the quality is still excellent and is very useful for recording interviews for example. While the omnidirectional mode is good for interviews as well, being able to position the mic between the two participants and use the stereo mode is a great option as well. The headphone jack is great, and helps enormously for checking the quality of the recording and adjusting the gain on the fly. The ability to separately adjust the gain and the headset volume is a great feature, too.This is a fantastic mic that is aimed at the beginning professional and/or advanced consumer market, and it is an excellent choice for at-home recordings. It can record voice overs as well as live music with the same ease and quality -- just be sure to choose the correct mode (there are 4 in total) and let the mic do the rest.B&H's prices are great ... ... This mic is just incredibly awesome!!!! Out of this world! Yes it's huge but so its quality of recording. Looks very professional, because is a professional microphone. Before I bought it I read, and read and watched lots of videos about this microphone; and all reviews said that the quality of recording and versatility of recording modes is superb, but it's too huge and though sturdy, the controls were wobbly. But when I recieved it it was out of my expectations. I expected the size of the mic, but I was overwhelmed by the quality of recording, it's cristal clear. In my mic the controls aren't wobbly, still plastic controls though.The awesome thing of this microphone vs other professional USB mics like the Rode Podcaster is the versatility of recording patterns. Like the Rode it also has a zero-latency headphone jack, with volume control, and with cardoid mode. Unlike the Rode it is not only a cardoid mic, it is also a omnidirectional, bidirectional and STEREO mic. Also unlike the Rode it has something very very important; adjustable gain. Also has an included yoke stand. Best of all is cheaper than the Rode. Conclusion: Buy it.I recommend buying in bundle with SHURE SRH240 headphone, a deal only offered in B&H. ... More
