Cheaper, better looking SM58

They are neither better nor worse than an SM58, and in the spaces I have used them it probably doesn't matter that much. I wouldn't use a typical dynamic mic for recording vocals. For that reason, the minor nuances between a Blue e100, a Sennheiser 835, or a Shure SM58 aren't all that important. The Sennheiser is a little hotter mic, and has some siblance issues relative to the other two. It's hard to describe the difference between the Blue and Shure version of the universal microphone. The difference is there, but it is subtle and, as I said before, hardly matters. They all have the same characteristics as far as handling noise. Durability isn't much of an issue with any of them, as clumsy singers and my own butter fingers have demonstrated on occasion. Shure has the brand recognition, so if you want the name, that's the way to go. If you want a slightly hotter mic, then the Sennheiser is the way to go. If you want to spend less and have an art deco looking mic, then the Blue is the way to go. If you have Blue mics, you will know they are yours, since nobody else seems to use them. No need to mark them, which is a ridiculous selling point, but there it is. At this point, I have three of them and will probably be selling off the SM58s and Sennheisers. So, why not five stars? These aren't the key to talent you never knew you had, they are just mics that do the same things as their equivalents from other companies. They just look nicer and cost less. I would give SM58s and 835s three stars. That's the equivalent of saying they are average. Being the benchmark is a tough business. ... More

I recently purchased this mic and received it in a couple days - Thanks B&H...It is a great choice. I've had a 58 and in a head to head the Blue sounds a lot better to me. It brings out the highs better and is not as muddy as the 58. Not to say the 58 isn't a great mic - we all know it is - but the 100 seems to be even better. My voice is in the baritone to tenor range and the 100 really added some sparkle to the upper dynamic range. If you're a female singer or have a high voice, you may not get the same result - it may add a little more than you need, but for the average males voice I find it hands down a better choice than the 58. It has some depth that similar mics lack and you know its high quality coming from Blue. I'm planning on getting an Encore 300 in the near future. I definitely recommend this mic for live sound - and in a pinch, it would probably be decent for recording, as well. ... More

I purchased this mic specifically for live close speaker performances. I use a neumann 105 for higher end concerts, but need a low feed solid mic that could get banged up a bit that wasn't as mid rangy as the sm58. This fits the bill! I really like it. It did very well with a female voice (unlike the 58 which sounds muddy for females) and did well in both very high pushed R&B range and a mellow mid and low range with jazz and blues. You'll also notice that is quite a bit more substantial. It has a nice weight and feels like it's made with real quality materials. If you're looking for a workhorse that is going to get weekly use, this is best bet in this price range that I've found (and I've looked). It also come with a nice lined bag, so it doesn't get banged up in your gig bag. The Blue enCore 100 is a great choice. ... More

At first, I was skeptical that this mic could hold it's own against the SM-58, especially because it's so much cheaper. However, this mic kicks a**!!! Putting together a gigging rig of beater mics has never been cheaper at around 50 bucks a pop. These mics have fantastic off-axis rejection and are just slightly less muddy in the low-mids, something I've always disliked about the 58. So far, i've loved it on guitar amps, lead and back up vocals, horns, and snare. And if you still aren't convinced, I love them so much I own 6 and plan on getting more! One thing to note: It's big brother, the Encore 300 is terrible. Not only is it an ugly brown, but it feeds back way quicker than an equivalent (e865) and has issues with sibilance, again, unlike the equivalents out there like the beta 87a or 865. ... More

Having been a long time machinist in my past I notice the second I unpacked this mic that it was built like a Sure SM57/58, maybe better. I have used it for vocals, acustic and electric/amped guitars, so far and am pleased. I think it has a more even tone than my SM57. Better mids and not so boomy on the bass. At about half the cost right now that is saying something. Even at a higher price I think this mic is a good value vs the SM57. My only problem is that I did not buy more of them. If I were micing a drum kit I would be tempted to try these in a multi mic environment. Very pleased so far, but only had it about 10 days. So time will tell, looking good so far. LB ... More

I was taking my time to look for a new stage mic for several months not really needing one before a string of Gigs over the Christmas holiday. I was torn between the classic Shure sm58 and this blue microphone. Not going to lie part of what made my decision was finding a great price at B and H, but boy am I happy I did. Bottom line this mic is as good or better than the shure as far as quality sound. Has great reach and dynamics for belting to whistling, and it looks twice as cool as the Shure. Just holding it you can tell its a quality made tool that will turn heads on and off stage. ... ... More

Having a smoky jazz baritone voice, my Shure SM58 makes my low/mids sound muddy, muffled and indistinct in live performances. Based on reviews, I bought the Blue enCore 100, and the difference was night and day. At a noisy live venue, my vocals cut through clear and bright, using the same PA, leads, EQ settings, as before. For the first time, I didn't get lost in the mix. Just wish I'd found these mics years ago. Bought two as they're so cheap - you can buy-one-get-one-free online.

I bring 4 of these around with me as I travel and have them connected to an H6. I do recommend to use a stand as they're not designed to be shifted regularly. One of my best use cases was recording a podcast where, unknowingly, several sea planes were landing outside. Although we were a little distracted as we spoke, the microphone captured our voice only -which was a very pleasant surprise while editing.

I play in a duo with a female singer. The Blue encore 100 was a big improvement for her voice over the Shure SM-58 we were using. She has a lot more confidence with the Blue. She feels that she can work less closely to the mic and still get an accurate vocal. We love it!

My wife and I compared this to my Shure SM58, and concluded that it is clearer and does not have the midrange bump that makes the 58 seem warm. That doesn't mean it's cold, just accurate. It does have more handling noise than the 58. However, I like it well enough to keep.

I use this microphone for podcasting and it is terrific. I'm well aware that there are more expensive microphones that would be better, but for the price I can't complain at all. But you'll need a pop filter with this. If you don't have one, you'll get those unprofessional-sounding air puffs.
